Your fave unfeminist things

Hi all! So I found myself watching the movie Overboard yesterday (original with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell) and as much as I adored it as much as when I was a teenager I can't help but feel a tad guilty for enjoying such an 'unfeminist' film.

You can google for full context and plot but if you haven't seen it, it's essentially a movie about a man who takes advantage of the fact that a 'rich bitch' woman who previously treated him like dirt develops amnesia. So he convinces her that she's his wife, and mother to his 4 ill-behaved boys, and has her do all his housework, cooking, parenting etc They end up falling in love.

It just got me thinking that a chat about all our favourite unfeminist things could be a laugh. Doesnt necessarily have to be a movie. Just anything you enjoy that makes the feminist in you cringe!

Thoughts?

Can't join in as I'm not a feminist lol

My DP has properly old fashioned non-feminist manners, opens and closes the car door for me, holds my coat, walks on the outside of the pavement, he’s even pulled my chair out for me in a Sainsbury café! I still haven’t got used to it, but I do like it.

On the other hand, he’s taught me to use a MIG welder 😁

What? You don't believe in equal pay and women having the vote? Shock

lljkk · 26/09/2022 20:21

Do people who call themselves feminist & GC full agree with this bit about all gendes?

Lots of people are feminists but don't call themselves such. That's fine.

Some feminists may define feminism different, so we may not agree with a random Google search.

Also, my husband put the bins out.

ImAvingOops · 26/09/2022 21:31

Feminism is believing that women all over the world, should have the same opportunities and rights as men.
It's about sex, not gender, since we all know that it's sex which determines outcomes.

ImAvingOops · 26/09/2022 21:33

I don't deal with spiders or cat vomit. I have a husband and adult sons in this house - those things are definitely men jobs!

There are a million statements people make on MN about men, that seem to express beliefs that are part of their feminist identity, that tell me I'm not one of the feminists. I strongly disagree with those statements & their underlying perspectives. Is how I know I'm not a feminist.

I am very grateful for having blokes around to help with heavy difficult physical jobs. I can work at the same tasks, find a way around like climbing a chair, but I'm so slow and weak, so the blokes lovely physical strength is great to get stuff done quickly, much appreciated, when it comes to stuff that needs a tall or strong person. This fact doesn't conflict with principles or identity, of course.

There was a 4'11" gal in the office who asked the 6'6" tall guy to do some task (window adjustment?) where height was very useful. Mutually beneficial. Probably nice for the tall guy to find his height useful not a nuisance, too.

I'm quite happy for DH to drive and I don't want to learn how to tow a trailer or change a tyre.

But surely anything you choose to do is feminist as it’s a choice we are lucky enough to have. I choose to do the cooking as I like it. If I was forced to do it, then it would be a different story.

I've never been very convinced by this argument. You have the freedom to choose as a consequence of feminism. It doesn't follow that any choice you make is a feminist choice (in the sense of actively promoting or at least not actively damaging the rights of women).

Nobody is less of a feminist for opting to removing body hair, pubic or otherwise.

Proud to be a feminist “bald eagle”. It feels nicer. Enough said!

I agree. But that’s true of a lot of things. We have the choice, we can choose to promote or damage it. All I’m saying is we now have the choice, we didn’t before, and if you choose to be a dick, well that’s on you!

I think you’ll find a lot of men like the same 😂

Well that’s fair, if you’re never going to drive yourself you’ll never have to do either of those things. Personally, I like to be prepared for every eventually. But, I have children now so I want to make sure I can do everything I can to get them home safely

Oh I know. I was being tongue in cheek (bald cheek!)

@Speedweed I have a capable man! He just plastered the sitting room, he fitted our kitchen and can do plumbing and electrics. He is head of a science dept at a University and is basically a very manly Professor. He did say when we got together, you want equality you put out the bins.

I love old musicals such as Calamity Jane, she gets her man after totally changing herself.

I like to be in charge of the kitchen, it feels like my domain.

Sahara123 · 28/09/2022 12:53

I put the bins out , deal with spiders and various dead/alive things the cat has brought in . I can tile and grout pretty well. But I love it when a man holds a door open for me, particularly if he’s wearing a nice suit and a silk tie , and there’s a gentle waft of very expensive after shave ! Although it be fair I’ll hold a door open for anyone too .

I really love making sandwiches. I make packed lunch for my DH to take to work, and pack an extra for him to share with a coworker who doesn't have a wife.

This has just made me picture a day when your DH is on leave, Co-worker staring at an empty plate, big tears rolling down cheeks, “ WHERE’S MY SANDWICH”
