Your fave unfeminist things

Hi all! So I found myself watching the movie Overboard yesterday (original with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell) and as much as I adored it as much as when I was a teenager I can't help but feel a tad guilty for enjoying such an 'unfeminist' film.

You can google for full context and plot but if you haven't seen it, it's essentially a movie about a man who takes advantage of the fact that a 'rich bitch' woman who previously treated him like dirt develops amnesia. So he convinces her that she's his wife, and mother to his 4 ill-behaved boys, and has her do all his housework, cooking, parenting etc They end up falling in love.

It just got me thinking that a chat about all our favourite unfeminist things could be a laugh. Doesnt necessarily have to be a movie. Just anything you enjoy that makes the feminist in you cringe!

Thoughts?

Men opening doors for me. My ex always used to walk on the outside of the pavement, which is very old school and quite lovely- best thing about him TBH

I hate womens football
I just do not care (even more than men's football)
Feel baaad just saying it

Thank God someone has said this. I dislike all sport but even I have noticed the BBC frantically pushing women's football down our throats. Why are they desperate to imply that women's football is suddenly as popular and influential as the men's game?

Watching Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders - Making the Team.

I love that programme! But yes, it's appalling (and their wages - especially considering how much the Cowboys made).

DH is both a chivalrous and capable man. He will walk on the outside of the pavement, open doors for me, make me tea and check I have what I need. He also does bins, chops logs, has built some great things in our house (full dressing room), hoover etc. Also above all else he writes the Christmas cards ! I meal plan, cook, do interiors stuff, joint finances/planning, pensions, holiday planning/booking and house admin. I am also a feminist who believes in equality but we play to our own strengths.

Yeiscray · 26/09/2022 16:23

Being a SAHM/having no career to take care of them. I not keen that I don’t have my own money or contribute to the house but I love that my kids know I’m there 24/7, it gives me just as much comfort.

James Bond.

StarlightLady · 26/09/2022 18:16

Nice lingerie. If I'm honest, I don't think it is un-feminist, but some agree to differ.

Men

Chivalrous men
Capable men
Flirtatious men
Confident men
Roguish men
Charming men

Basically men with a twinkle in their eyes paying solicitous attention to me.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 26/09/2022 18:30

Agree about hip hop. I love Dr Dre I can't help it!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 26/09/2022 18:32

Also Pharrel 🙈

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 26/09/2022 18:33

I expect dh to deal with all things car related. I do. not. want. to. know.
I have no shame.
Car related stuff bores me to tears, so it's very fortunate he happens to be good at that stuff (can replace head gaskets and everything) or we'd be spending a fortune at the garage.
I balance that with being really good at stone wall repairs.

AclowncalledAlice · 26/09/2022 18:44

I do (most of), the cooking, all of the laundry and the food shop. I give no fucks about it.

Facecream · 26/09/2022 18:46

I’m not sure - shaving everything?
I’m a SAHM because my DD is so disabled but I’m the DIY person in our family.
I do the gardening, love digging a big hole 😀
I grow the veg, walk the dog, strip wallpaper..
I absolutely love my reciprocating saw. I’m happy when I’m doing tough physical work though I did 3 degrees in philosophy, which back in the day was a predominantly male subject as it’s abstract don’t you know etc.
My DH cooks. I hate cooking.
I’m definitely not girly.
I hate that my DH’s family are so Jake centric (my mum was the “boss” so I had plenty of practice for being tough, though I can’t cry easily or express soft emotions).

having said all that, I love Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Wish I could float around in awesome period dresses (only if I could breathe), want to shave bits for my sake and want to make as much money as my former (pre DD) life allowed.

I like baking because I know my DH likes it. But that’s probably it.

Love Island.

A man opening doors, paying for dinner, paying my bills, giving me expensive gifts, and anal sex. Not necessarily in that order 😉

Most of the comments here don't seem to know what feminism is.

Yes. Yes. Yes

Even as a little girl I knew that scoundrel Han Solo was my perfect bloke, when all my friends were in love with squeaky clean, prissy, bland, bland, bland Luke Skywalker.

I love that DH can still make me blush like a teenager.

schmalex · 26/09/2022 18:58

My fake boobs 😁

Rabbit by Chas and Dave

Not to mention 'Gang Bang'. Speaking of which, My inner feminist is appalled that I ever found 'Rita, Sue and Bob Too' (the film in which the song appeared) hilariously funny, and even now find the long-suffering wife Michelle a laugh a minute....

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 26/09/2022 19:06

Actually my mistake - that might have been 'Black Lace!'

Fluffyfluffflufffluff · 26/09/2022 18:51

Most of the comments here don't seem to know what feminism is.

Well true, real feminism is about having true choice and many of these are just people exercising choice.
Suppose many of us are really talking about conforming to stereotype rather than betraying feminism.
But you know, we're just relaxing here.

derxa · 26/09/2022 19:44

I'm a farmer and run my own wee farm. I'm not girly at all. The men I meet are by their very nature very physically capable and business minded. However they don't mind when I ask very basic questions. We were taking some sheep to a sale last week and our lorry driver let us down but a neighbour helped us out. They refused my offer of money for diesel.
My DH has a non manual job but he's still a manly man.
Feminism for me is being able to make my own choices. I like men in general but maybe that's because I've had decent ones in my life. That and having a good bull shit detector.

AndTwoFilmsByFrancoisTruffaut · 26/09/2022 19:59

DH always does the bins and garden dog poo clearing, hoovering and mowing the lawn. I haven’t done any of these chores since we met. He likes to look after me and I love to be looked after!

DH fills the car with petrol when I’m driving

DH handles all the finances even though I’m the bread winner, albeit marginally
