Can we have a Golden Girls Appreciation Thread?

I’ve discovered that The Golden Girls is on Disney+ and I’m obsessed.

It’s such sweet nostalgia - I used to watch it with my mum and dad back in the ‘80s - but it’s still bloody funny!

I mean, we’ll gloss over the fact that I’m only a few years younger than them now…

Anybody else, or am I alone out here on my lanai?

Looks like I’ll have to eat my chocolate cheesecake all by myself!

I loved the Golden Girls not seen it for many years 😍

I love the Golden Girls, I used to watch it with my Mum back in the 80’s. Sophia is my favourite

Its lovely isn't it. Completely passed me by before it came onto Disney+. I dont know if it was on tv in the UK or just the US when it was out originally?

I can't believe none of them are still living now 😥

TulipTuesday · 16/09/2022 22:36

During lockdown channel 4 showed every episode, 2 a day every week day. It was one of the things that got me through!

awaynboilyurheid · 16/09/2022 22:36

Thank you didn’t know it was on Disney plus! Loved the GG, it was so well written!

SnaccidentsHappen · 16/09/2022 22:41

I found it on Disney plus last year and rewatched every episode. I love it

ShirleyJackson · 16/09/2022 22:43

Sophia is wonderful, but it I want to be Dorothy when I grow up. She has all the best lines.

‘Go to sleep, sweetheart. Pray for brains.’ Grin

We have a story book called Goodnight Girls and it's a Golden Girls bedtime story for little ones!

ShirleyJackson · 16/09/2022 22:46

I just love the way everything is all tied up in a neat bow at the end of every episode. So comforting.

I love their comic timing - especially the gorgeous Betty White. It’s great when they let her unleash a bit of her old Hollywood glamour as well, and put her in tap shoes.

And Sophia is pure anarchy 😂😂

@chineapplepunks - wow!

I hope they’ve toned Blanche down! I’d love to hear one of her bedtime stories, but I don’t think it’d be for the kiddies!

We rewatched during lockdown. Bea Arthur is class and Betty White is such a comedian.

ShirleyJackson · 16/09/2022 22:48

I’ve just been howling at Rose’s herring circus story. DH came downstairs to see what was going on 😀

ShirleyJackson · 16/09/2022 22:49

Bea Arthur really was a class act. I’d love to see Maude, but I can’t find it streaming anywhere.

My favourite episode was where Blanche said she was never getting on top again after looking down into a mirror😱😱😱😱

ShirleyJackson · 16/09/2022 22:51

@Aconitum ha!

It’s scary how much I relate to it now, forty years later!

I read recently that the Golden Girls were younger than Carrie and co in the new series of Sex And The City Shock

ShirleyJackson · 16/09/2022 23:00

Yup. And Sophia was younger than Dorothy in real life!

I must admit, I find myself musing over having a Golden Girls-style arrangement if DH goes before me. It does seem to be an excellent idea.

@ShirleyJackson You should look it up on amazon! The girls have a sleepover and Sophia is trying to get them to go to bed. It's got lots of call backs to the show!

Wanttobeanastronaut · 16/09/2022 23:04

I binge watched the whole series last year when I had been made redundant and was feeling really down. Its now my go-to easy watch series, I adore them all. I have a particularly soft spot for Sophia but Blanche is my fave. Wish I had her confidence!

Msgrieves · 16/09/2022 23:05

Absolutely love it, watched it all when I had a free Disney sub with my phone.

ShirleyJackson · 16/09/2022 23:05

@chineapplepunks I’m so tempted!

OP posts:
ShirleyJackson · 16/09/2022 23:07

@Wanttobeanastronaut I love Dorothy’s little put downs when Blanche gets a bit above herself.

’What’s a woman in her forties to do?’
’I don’t know, Blanche, let’s find one and ask her.’

😂

We used to watch it in the 80s on ch4, tbh all I remembered was Sophia and her "picture this" haha. Tbh it was very progressive for its time, lots of slut shaming and a few spicy Jewish jokes, but none were particularly egregious. Its definitely a comfort watch. Wonder if roseanne would hold up, used to love that too.
