Can we have a Golden Girls Appreciation Thread?

ShirleyJackson · 16/09/2022 22:25

I’ve discovered that The Golden Girls is on Disney+ and I’m obsessed.

It’s such sweet nostalgia - I used to watch it with my mum and dad back in the ‘80s - but it’s still bloody funny!

I mean, we’ll gloss over the fact that I’m only a few years younger than them now…

Anybody else, or am I alone out here on my lanai?

@ShirleyJackson I’m so glad you confirmed it was a Friday evening. Not sure how I remembered.

I do remember Sofia bring scared if going to the Shady Pines.

Wanttobeanastronaut · 18/09/2022 18:20

I've never had the chance to see the Golden Palace (and the dvds are really hard to find) so now I know its on YouTube I'll have a look!

I love the episode of GG where Sophia befriends the guy on the boardwalk who turns out to have Alzheimer's. And when he eventually moves away and she laments hiw sad it is getting older. Gets me in the feels every time.

Suzi888 · 18/09/2022 18:24

I was allowed to stay up late and watch GG when I was a child.
I have been watching the reruns on SKY- love it!

Never fail to make me smile, sad they’ve all passed away.

Yes, I loved GG. My Friday night, end of school week treat! I remember the one where Blanche has a pg scare but it was just oeri-menopause!

I also remember her line, ‘ I’m as jumpy as a virgin in a prison rodeo camp!’

Stressybetty · 18/09/2022 18:57

Watched the first series with MIL recently. Used to love it growing up. The only thing I don't always get is some of the references to American people. Otherwise I love it

DiscoStusMoonboots · 18/09/2022 19:21

This is the thread I've been waiting for! GG is my absolute favourite, and a real feel-good programme. I have an Aunt who is very much like Blanche, which has always made it extra special. Lots of celeb cameos too!

ZombeaArthur · 19/09/2022 11:37

Did everyone spot Quentin Tarantino in the episode where Sophia gets married?

Georgeskitchen · 19/09/2022 11:43

I loved the relationship between Dorothy and her ex husband Stanley it was hilarious 😂

paisley256 · 19/09/2022 11:50

I adore GG especially Blanche's sling back sandals clacking on the floor when she flounced. 😀

Dorothy was hilarious and so witty. Loved her scenes with Stan her ex.

Gonna go and rewatch, such a warm feel good show. I've got cheesecake in too!

I adore The Golden Girls and it brings back such wonderful memories.
It was on a Friday night when we were young. Mum would go food shopping and get all the ‘goodies’ for our Friday night viewing and we (mum, my dsis and I) would sit and watch it and munch on our treats.
Sadly, mum has Alzheimer’s now and doesn’t recall many things but weirdly does remember The Golden Girls.
I have just started a months trial of Disney+ so will get the app on mum and dads tv and we can have a little reminiscing session.

I loved it! I was Blanche but have now become Dorothy

Wanttobeanastronaut · 19/09/2022 12:52

I love the sound of Blanche's clicky sandals. I would love to have a pair, weird as that is.

paisley256 · 19/09/2022 13:20

No it's not wierd, I've googled kitten heeled sling backs on many occasion after watching GG. I might be done with it and just get some. 😀

Oh thank you for this!

TGG was my absolute favourite - I'll get watching now!

I’ve put it on as a bit of light relief after a heavy day.

I loved the way Blanche clicked-clacked in her shoes…

George Clooney is in an episode too! I think it may have been his first credited role.

I dropped a Grab That Dough! gif on a work friend the other day and they... didn't get it. I felt sad.

shadypines · 19/09/2022 20:21

Picture it...Sicily 1922, a young peasant girl......😀.In my dreams I share a house in Miami with the GG's and we have lots of fun, especially chatting with cheesecake during the night whilst wearing fabulous pjs and flowy nightgowns!
If I need a laugh I know I can always go to the You Tube compilations for the 'best of', one of my faves is the compilation of Stanley (Spornak) put downs, it's absolute gold.

ShirleyJackson · 19/09/2022 20:24

Nightgowns with shoulder pads, and sling back slippers.

That’s how to live.

I love it and both my daughters who are in their twenties love it. My youngest actually called her dog Dorothy as she’s such a fan. She also says “she’s just like you mum” and I take that as a huge compliment. NB she meant Dorothy from Golden Girls is just like me,not her dog!

OMG. I also have a canine Dorothy. My sons watched GG thru lockdown and when we got a puppy their nominated names were Dorothy, Sophia and Moira (Schitts Creek). Dorothy won.

bythere · 20/09/2022 09:27

Dorothy could be savage but Sophia had some of the best one liners. There was one where they were both fighting over a Cuban cigar mogul and Blanche comes out in her nightgown when he and Sophia are in the living room

Sophia: "Beat it, you 50 year old mattress!"

(Also from the same episode) Blanche: If you don't mind me, I'm going to take a long hot steamy bath with just enough water to barely cover my perky bosoms."

Sophia: "You're only going to sit in an inch of water?"

TortolaParadise · 28/10/2022 21:46

'Shut up Rose.'

😂

TortolaParadise · 27/12/2022 18:58

Watched this Christmas Day and still laughing!

shadypines · 29/12/2022 23:00

Myself and DD 20 yr often watch the Christmas episode this time of year. Starts with Blanche bringing home 'Santa' from the Mall. Love the bit where they swap expensive gifts for homemade. And Rose, ''Did I tell you about the time in St. Olaf when we staged a version of A Christmas Carol with an all chicken cast?''
