Can we have a Golden Girls Appreciation Thread?

I’ve discovered that The Golden Girls is on Disney+ and I’m obsessed.

It’s such sweet nostalgia - I used to watch it with my mum and dad back in the ‘80s - but it’s still bloody funny!

I mean, we’ll gloss over the fact that I’m only a few years younger than them now…

Anybody else, or am I alone out here on my lanai?

I like that it deals with middle aged women having sexualities. That’s still groundbreaking really, even forty years later.

And good, solid female friendships. Men just pass through, never to be seen again 😀

And I’m desperate for Blanche’s kimono.

Loved it! I bought the full Box Set, and hope to watch it with my kids when they're older.

I like the affection between Dorothy and Sophia - when she calls Dorothy ‘pussycat’.

’Dorothy! A mother knows…’

I love it and both my daughters who are in their twenties love it. My youngest actually called her dog Dorothy as she’s such a fan. She also says “she’s just like you mum” and I take that as a huge compliment. NB she meant Dorothy from Golden Girls is just like me,not her dog!

Such great memories of watching The GGs with my Mum, as a kid. I always wanted to be Dorothy.

autumnlights · 17/09/2022 06:37

I absolutely love it. It's my comfort watching show. Every time I hear the theme tune I feel like I'm in the 80s again. I hope they never try to remake it, it was too much of a classic.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/09/2022 06:42

God, a rename would be awful, wouldn't it? They just wouldn't get it.

Loved the Golden Girls.

Yay,love this thread and love the GG.

I always tried to pick a favourite, but I cant, I love them all. But, I want to be Sophia when I get to my 80s.

This is my favourite line:
“I thought I was gonna die. I swear I have never felt such agony. I saw my entire life flash before my eyes and I thought, ‘What a shame if I die now, I’m too young… and I’m wearing the wrong underwear.’” — Blanche

dudsville · 17/09/2022 06:55

Ahhh, yay! I was reminded of this show a while back and couldn't find it. This will now be my new binge, what happy

ShirleyJackson · 17/09/2022 07:10

The theme tune is immense.

DH actually had the audacity to skip it once. Once. I put a Sicilian curse on him and he hasn’t tried it again.

’And if you threw a party….iiiiiiiinvited everyone you kneeeeeeew’

They tried to make an English version of it in the 80s.

Brighton Belles, anyone remember?

It was godawful.

Ah, it was the 90s. Still no excuse.

If we’re playing favourite lines, can I offer this from Dorothy?

’Listen, it’s not easy being a mother. If it were easy, fathers would do it.’

I remember it the first time round and again during lockdown. Brilliant show. Cheers is another good one to watch from the beginning.

Mookie81 · 17/09/2022 07:39

It's amazing and so ahead of its time with the subjects it covered.
Dorothy is an absolute card, her sarcastic quips to Rose are great!
And no, I never skip the theme tune. 😄

Furnitureflipper · 17/09/2022 08:31

I love the outfits they wore. I remember my aunt looking and behaving like Blanche. I always feel nostalgic watching them remembering the fashions and interiors. Everything is so beige and boring now by comparison.

GreenClock · 17/09/2022 08:38

I haven’t watched it since I was a kid in
the 1980s. I bet I’d covet the interiors and the fashions now. I do recall Blanche in some great clothes.

Lovely, kind, ditzy Rose was my favourite.

I only remember two specific things. Blanche giving Rose the room when she saw her being kind to somebody, and a character called Mr Pfeiffer who pronounced the P.

ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler · 17/09/2022 08:41

I love the Golden Girls it is my no.1 comfort TV show.

All of the characters are so loveable and it is still so funny. I love the one where they get arrested for being prostitutes in the hotel lobby or when Rose thinks she kills men by having sex with them. The Stan/Dorothy relationship is also very well done throughout the show.

FayeGovan · 17/09/2022 08:43

Absolutely love the Golden Girls thanks @ShirleyJackson for this thread

FayeGovan · 17/09/2022 08:56

My absolute favourite scene is the one where Blanche is telling the other girls about who she took to her senior prom...she built it up telling them how everyone disapproved but she did it anyway as it was the right thing to do...Dorothy was full of admiration and said Blanche i cant believe you took a black man to your senior prom im so proud of you, Blanche says Black?? He wasn't black, he was from New Jersey...

Sooo funny

I can sing the theme tune word for word but i haven't seen it for years...i watched it with my flatmates, all girls, we were each a character, i was Blanche..nowadays I'm more Sophia 😁

CocktailNapkin · 17/09/2022 09:11

I was just rewatching episodes this week - its a total comfort watch!

Fun fact - Mitchell Hurwitz who created and wrote Arrested Development was a writer and editor on Golden Girls. You can see a lot of his comedy writing style from GG in AD.

ShirleyJackson · 17/09/2022 10:37

@FayeGovan that’s a brilliant moment - it’s so cleverly built up.

’Blaaayack? Benjamin wasn’t blayack!’
