Can we have a Golden Girls Appreciation Thread?

I’ve discovered that The Golden Girls is on Disney+ and I’m obsessed.

It’s such sweet nostalgia - I used to watch it with my mum and dad back in the ‘80s - but it’s still bloody funny!

I mean, we’ll gloss over the fact that I’m only a few years younger than them now…

Anybody else, or am I alone out here on my lanai?

Haha I’m remembering Dorothy punching a hole in Rose’s top hat because she was jealous she couldn’t be in the tap dancing recital.

The best comedy ever! I remember Brighton Belles. I tried so hard to stick with it but nooooo. Just not funny. Dorothy and Sophia all the way.

I’m sure the GG was on a Friday evening on Channel 4, possibly before Roseanne? Or a similar slot.

I loved Dorothy, she was so deadpan.

@ShirleyJackson You should try and see Betty White in the Mary Tyler Moore show from the late sixties/early 70s. In it she played the wonderful Sue Ann Nivens, "The Happy Homemaker," a sharp tongued man eater.

Interestingly, when they were casting the Golden Girls they offered Betty White the role of Blanche Devereaux because that was similar to her role in Mary Tyler Moore, Rue McClanahan was offered the role of Rose Nyland because she had played the naive innocent in Beatrice Arthur's previous series "Maude." Ultimately the two women decided they wanted to do something different and the produces allowed them to spot characters characters.

I remember reading that decades ago, but it may just been urban myth, but it makes sense in the context.

I have been watching it with the 8yr old, both finding it funny

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 18/09/2022 05:28

Love the GG, it’s a well trodden joke between me and my mates that we are going to live in a condo together once the kids have grown up and we’ve bumped the men off.

I love the fashions too, reminds me of my childhood, total comfort watch

It was! My mum and I used to do the weekly shop on a Friday evening, and then watch The Golden Girls with whatever nice biscuits we’d bought. Happy memories.

I read that too! Makes you realise what talented actresses they were.

Oooooooh did not know it was on Disney+

Have you seen the TikTok where someone has realised the GG are approx the same age as the Sex In The City girls and swapped their hair styles. GG look so youthful with Carrie et al flowing locks.

I haven't seen it for 30+ years

ZombeaArthur · 18/09/2022 07:17

I’m a HUGE Golden Girls fan. I
used to watch with my Mum when it was first shown and was lucky enough to get the boxset about 15 years ago. I watch it with my girls now when I can persuade them. We have two of the story books
and, amazingly, managed to get some Fisher Price Golden Girls toys for Christmas last year!

If anyone wants to keep the magic going, all episodes of the Golden Palace are available on YouTube. I just rewatched them all and, although they’re nowhere as good as the original series, it is nice to get a little more of the girls.

(I also have a Golden Girls inspired tattoo.)

ShirleyJackson · 18/09/2022 07:20

What’s The Golden Palace?

Is it some kind of spin-off?!

I’m excited!

also can we see your tattoo?

Rose’s St Olaf stories were always superb. In some of them you can see the others trying not to crack up, whilst Betty sails on regardless

ZombeaArthur · 18/09/2022 07:39

@ShirleyJackson The Golden Palace was a spin-off where Rose, Blanche and Sophia sold the house and bought and ran a hotel in Miami. It’s quite funny and it’s nice to have a little more of the girls, however a lot of the original magic was missing and it really just wasn’t the same without Dorothy (although she did make an appearance).

ShirleyJackson · 18/09/2022 07:47

I can’t imagine no Dorothy!

Yes! You can clearly see Bea and Rue corpsing during the herring circus story.

’Tell me Rose, did they ever shoot a herring out of a cannon?’
’Only once. It landed in a tree. After that, no other herring would do it.’

😂

i watched it before I went to clubs when I was in my teens!
rewatched the whole thing the moment it wa in Disney.
Blanche’s bedroom is very now, all palm prints and pink velvet!
I also always loved the very risqué story Blanche tells about waving goodnight to her teacher with her foot - which was over her boyfriend’s shoulder- I never forgot that line!!
Also - Rose’s HIV scare. Really well done and considering the era..

ShirleyJackson · 18/09/2022 07:57

They were groundbreaking. I just rewatched them episode where Blanche reaches menopause, and I realised - it’s only in the past year that we’ve started talking about menopause openly! They were doing it 40 years ago!

And they sat around discussing periods. Again, groundbreaking.

(We’ll gloss over the weird ‘breeding mink in the basement’ storyline. The 80s were odd).

Love the Golden Girls. Used to watch the DVDs obsessively after leaving exdh - it was a reminder that life would go on and you could have a great time without being in a traditional couple.

Flumpaphone · 18/09/2022 09:44

Rose: "Can I ask a dumb question?"

Dorothy: "Better than anyone I know"

Reading this has made me so nostalgic for The Golden Girls. I used to love watching it as a teen. Might have to go and get myself a Disney+ subscription…

ShirleyJackson · 18/09/2022 10:32

I’ve started craving a dropped waist dress. I might be overdosing.

‘Jealousy is a very ugly thing, Dorothy, and so are you in anything backless.’

Sophia 😂

I love the golden girls. I have only recently nodiscovered it, I'm afraid it had stopped airing before I was born so I only discovered it through Pinterest memes and then tracking down a few episodes on YouTube. I was hooked. Its definitely my comfort watch. My birthday was last week and my lovely in-laws bought me the box set so I always have them. I really want to be Dorothy when I turn fifty. She was just awesome though I adored Sophia as well

NewHopeNow · 18/09/2022 11:36

Oh I've never watched this properly but seen snippets on YouTube etc and always wanted to. Didn't know it was on Disney, I'll definitely be starting it tonight. Going through a really hard time and think this could be a fun distraction, thanks.
