What a woman, she is 72 years old !! I can’t believe how amazing she has been in the last few days.

I always knew she was the most hardworking royal , but this week she has been outstanding.

Diana would only outrank her if she was with Charles. Anne is a princess of the blood royal.
(not that I agree with all this rank business but the order is precedence is fascinating!). In theory, if Camila is alone, despite being Queen consort, Anne outranks her due to being of Royal blood.

I don’t think that’s true now Camilla is Queen, or at least once she’s crowned Queen - once you’ve been ordained by God then I guess that trounces royal blood.

refused to be kidnapped. Just Not Having It. And that was that!

Apparently when the would-be kidnapper told her to get out of the car her reply was 'Not bloody likely!'

Rewis · 12/09/2022 22:25

Anne's attempted kidnapping is one of my fave royal stories.

Quite a remarkable lady.

RobertsRadio · 12/09/2022 22:26

Another fan here for many years. I was hugely impressed when she made the decision that her children would not have royal titles. I remember her first wedding day, and was there to see her go by in her "going away outfit" and couldn't believe how beautiful she looked. Apparently a makeup artist had flown in from Paris to do her wedding makeup; they did a wonderful job.

FlyingPandas · 12/09/2022 22:27

Another 'Anne fan' here. I think she is absolutely brilliant. Down to earth and no nonsense but essentially kind and phenomenally hard-working. Amazing role model. And a brilliant sense of humour. I remember reading a quote from her years ago about Zara's birth, and what was perceived as a very unusual name choice at the time. She apparently laughed and said something along the lines of 'I had a letter from just about every Zara in the country and I promise there are quite a few' Grin

Fabulous woman.

I used to work for one of her charities. She could always speak very knowledgably without notes. She was also very good with our beneficiaries, it's just journalists she has no time for!

I knew someone who worked for one her her majpr charities and he always said that you had to be on the ball when she visited, she was amazingly well informed and could ask some tricky questions.

Abouttimemum · 12/09/2022 22:30

I interviewed her when she opened a local charity shop (BHF or Red Cross, I don’t remember) 20 ish years ago and she was magnificent and really lovely to me as a wet behind the ears newly qualified journalist. As opposed to some celebs I’ve interviewed who were bloody awful to me.

Also did the PR for an event in 2019 with the now King Charles and he was also lovely to work alongside.

Out of curiosity I once looked up the annual calendar of Royal engagements. Anne had more engagements than anyone else by a country mile. She often attended more than one a day - sometimes 3. Usually not glamorous.

This is the workaday life of a Royal and what the monarchy is built on. Getting out there and listening to ordinary folk. It obviously came as a surprise to Meghan who had assumed she’d get to do the fancy events that gets Catherine in the papers. I don’t blame Meghan for running a mile, it’s not how many people would wish to spend their life!

When we had a ball she had flown up to scotland that mornong and done 2 engagements up there.Came back to London for the ball, would normally leave after the dinner, but stayed to see Jules Holland performe as apparently he was one of her favorites.

viques · 12/09/2022 22:35

I hate her * apparently she can get into the made to measure dresses she wore when she was in her early twenties, and she has fabulous legs.

  • don’t really 🙂

Does anyone else remember seeing Princess Anne when she was on A Question of Sport on Emlyn Hughes’ team? Such a great sense of humour! Grin

Yes, and Bill Beaumont saying "Emlyn's been practicing with his arms folded", as he had a habit of putting his arms round his team mates.

My dad met Anne once; he was a volunteer at a charity she was patron of. Slightly disapproved of her arriving by helicopter until he realised how many other (non-glamorous) engagements she was fitting in that day. She was well informed, down to earth and generous; he thought she was great.

Shouldn't be too difficult to outrank Edward. He's never served and he quit the Marines 3 months into the 12 month training. Not sure how he has the nerve to wear a uniform tbh as all his ranks and titles are honorary. I think he conducts himself well but the uniform thing irks me.

I also think that Anne is probably relieved she isn't monarch. She can live her country life how she wants. She'd be too restricted with everything that goes with being Queen.

I've always thought that it took great courage for Edward to realise that he wasn't cut out for the marines, so many plod on. Imagine having to go to his father and tell him.

BathTangle · 12/09/2022 22:36

One of my claims to fame is nearly being run over by Princess Anne - I was at Buckingham Palace as a friend of my dad's worked there and invited us to attend an event. She came steaming through the Buckingham Palace gates driving herself in a mini and nearly knocked us flying! 10 minutes later she came out immaculately dressed in the back of a chauffeur driven Rolls - she always looks well turned out but she's very quick about it!

Bonbon21 · 12/09/2022 22:39

When Diana and Charles got married , it was about six weeks after Princess Anne had given birth to Zara...she looked AMAZING at the wedding...
.... amd wore the same outfit to a other wedding about 27 years later.... and still looked AMAZING.
She is quoted as saying that having children is an occupational hazard of marriage!!
Fabulous woman!!!

LadyVictoriaSponge · 12/09/2022 21:54

I think she was also given the Princess Royal title so that she was never outranked by new members like Diana, I could be wrong though, need one of our resident royal experts to confirm!

Apparently a royal wife is treated differntly, re curtseying etc, if she's alone or with her spouse. Anne outranks Kate, Meghan etc when they're alone but if they're with William, Harry then they outrank her and she's supposed to curtsey to them!

SpoonsAndLoons · 12/09/2022 22:41

I doubt Anne would curtsy to Harry or Meghan or even Kate.

PlacidPenelope · 12/09/2022 22:41

I remember a while ago an article where the journalists who follow the Royals on their tours said they knew that if they were following Anne it would be hard work, nothing cushy and Anne would be on very much on top of her brief. Anne went out to Africa as part of her role with Save the Children and it was camping in tents for Anne and everyone else (including the journalists!) no comfy hotel, days of actual graft, no posh frocks or sitting around sipping cocktails. The journalists said if you wanted glamour and glittering receptions don't volunteer to go on one of Anne's tours.

A very admirable lady - no fuss, straight talking, independent minded.

Sporty2022 · 12/09/2022 22:09

Princess Anne didn’t give her children royal titles either. Just Zara and Mark Phillips.

Zara married a commoner (rugby player) who’s been done for drink driving previously.

As she and her first husband had refused a title for him, her children couldn't have titles, it wasn't Anne's choice. When they were 18 I heard that HM offered them titles and they declined.

Whokno · 12/09/2022 22:46

If we had the rule of matriarchy in this country, she'd be Queen Anne with Zara second in line. #justsaying

Princessglittery · 12/09/2022 22:46

I agree Anne’s amazing. To be fair Charles and Camilla have also been on the go for the last 4 days. Far more stamina than I’ve got.

Didn't she threaten to hit him with her handbag?

Whokno · 12/09/2022 22:47

I feel really sorry for Charles and Camilla too. They all must be knackered. I want to invite them round for a cuppa and slice of cake and just shut all the curtains for a bit and leave them be.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 12/09/2022 22:48

So when Andrew was married to Fergie, if Andrew was in the room she would have had to curtsy to Sarah? I can’t see Ann doing that protocol or not!

Maireas · 12/09/2022 22:49

I watched the King at Westminster Hall this morning, then up to Edinburgh, ceremony of the keys, walk up the Royal Mile, service, vigil - it really seems to have been non stop. All being watched for every tiny mistake.

I met her years ago. She’s fantastic. It was an official opening, she said “So you organised all this?” Me “Yes ma’am”, she replied “I bet the men are taking all the credit. Thank you.”

Brilliant!
