Does anyone have a John Lewis Partnership credit card?

I've received a letter saying the partnership card is closing from October. Does anyone know why this is?

I thought they said a while ago they were just changing the card, not stopping it altogether!

I applied for the new one

Took literally minutes online (I had an email link) and I could start using it straight away online and for Apple Pay. Card arrived a few days later

Easiest credit card application ever

The new rewards are quite stingy so I've bitten the bullet and applied for the Lloyds cash back credit card which has a higher rate.

I also have the cash back card. It's very good (probably because I spend too much 🙄)

Trulyweird1 · 27/09/2022 08:31

Just found this thread. Like several other posters, I applied, but was turned down . No clue why, other than I pay it off each month, have no debt, ( over 60 - mortgage paid etc) , have a decent income.
No big deal, my bank issued one within days and it has decent rewards.
But it’s another reason to stop ordering from JL, and I am 100 miles from the nearest Waitrose. They really have gone downhill.

JL refused to refund me an online payment which was duplicated because it was £95 and ‘under £100’. This was the first time ever I’d requested assistance after holding the pink card for literally decades and they refused to help. The new shop card has terrible write ups on line, and I am insulted that I have to apply and be credit checked, after being a good customer for so long, so I refuse to apply. Bye bye JL.

woodhill · 27/09/2022 17:46

I've just had a statement and if I had used the old card I wouldn't have had to pay for the items till next month but this one has come really quickly

Join me with Amex. Their customer service is excellent and this year I made £80 in cash back, and that’s the free card. If you want a refer a friend code then let me know.

largeprintagathachristie · 27/09/2022 22:45

I had the email about it and the application took a couple of minutes. Can’t really complain about the process.

Was offered the same credit limit as before. (They make no money off me, as I pay in full every month.).

I also have an Amex, though, and wondering whether it would be better to put all spending through that for cash back. I can’t quite get my head around comparing which card of those two is best for rewards, as they’re not like for like. And am outside the new-card holder booster period for Amex cash back.

Store cards like JLP and M&S are best used in the relevant store for maximum points but not much rewards elsewhere, so best to use cashback card in all other places apart from JL and Waitrose with JLP card

Apparently I'm not eligible - no idea why. I earn £50k and our household income is mid 6 figures, we're early 40s, homeowners with no mortgage and no other debts. I've been a customer for more than 10 years and always paid my bill in full.

Makes me wonder who they are accepting!

Have you checked your credit rating recently? Or moved house ?

AssumethePerpendicular · 28/09/2022 06:25

I’m going to miss the vouchers to spend on myself! I decided not to reapply as the points benefit was less and i don’t ship in Waitrose. I’ve gone for a Sainsburys card instead which is interest free to 2024 and they have doubled my credit limit. So I’m spreading the cost of our new boiler as well as usual spend paid off monthly.
I wonder if I would be accepted as I pay off monthly.

woodhill · 01/10/2022 12:33

Apparently if you transfer from old card you only get 15 days' credit, not happy

woodhill · 01/10/2022 12:51

Also call centre is crap and I'm waiting 45 mins to speak to someone

Want to set up payments the traditional way not the stupid app

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 01/10/2022 12:55

I'm dithering - have transferred to the new card and really liked the vouchers, but am doing some homework now. I've already got an Amex so won't get any of the intro offers. Might go for the Sainsburys/Nectar one.

HideTheCroissants · 01/10/2022 13:23

Well having previously said how easy it all was applying for the new card and getting accepted my husband received his new card but nothing for me (although we’d applied for a second card for me at the same and it had been accepted). So went onto the app and no second cardholder listed. Applied AGAIN for me - my pin arrived over a week ago but still no card and the old one stops working in a matter of days!

DH has been using the new card BUT it has to be inserted and pin entered SO often! We went into four shops this morning and on all but one occasion contactless was refused and he had to insert the card. Almost never had to use the pin with the old card.

Seriously considering getting a different card…. MAYBE Amex but still not accepted in lots of places …. two of the shops we used this morning don’t accept it….

JacquelineCarlyle · 01/10/2022 13:29

@HideTheCroissants I applied a few weeks ago, got the PIN last week but still no sign of the actual card. It's very frustrating.

I did also apply for an Amex card as their cash back is great, and got that within a week of applying!

HideTheCroissants · 01/10/2022 14:56

So… we just spent the last hour or so checking reviews etc. Just applied for Amex cash back (£25 pa fee) card for DH with additional card for me. All accepted and we’ve calculated that if we spend the same on this as we did on our old JL card over the last year then we will earn over £400 after taking off the fee and not including the new card bonus!

We will either keep the new JL card for the occasions we can’t use Amex (IF my card arrives) or look replacing that one with another Mastercard.

SavingsThreads · 01/10/2022 22:13

Same @HideTheCroissants, I've gone with M&S. Also want to get an amex but need an M&S for all the times Amex not accepted (a lot round here!).

Anyone got an Amex referral code they want to send me?!

ImAvingOops · 02/10/2022 07:46

We used to have M&S but they seriously reduced the vouchers and were a bit twitchy about unexpected spending and used to block the card without warning until they'd spoken to us to confirm purchases.
This was really not helpful when dh was using it for work expenses and they would decline payment.Otoh, from a fraud prevention pov it was good that they were keeping an eye on things.

Tiredoftiers · 02/10/2022 07:58

M&S card is a nightmare for declining purchases, particularly over the phone and online. I have a Halifax card as a backup cause it’s much more reliable. I find you always need a couple of credit cards.
m&s don’t care if you pay the balance of in full, if they did they would stop the exceptionally annoying practice of folk buying at the till with their card and then paying off what they’ve just spent on the card with their debit card at the same till!

ThePenIsBlue · 02/10/2022 08:02

grannysbay · 25/08/2022 18:23

Just done it - relatively painless. You need a code which you will have on a letter or email. Credit limit has more than doubled, though: I wasn't able to find an option to reduce it.

My credit limit was £12000 (yes, £12k!) on the old one, not that I ever got near that. It’s dropped to £800 now on the new one! Useless to me.

TeaMoreToast · 02/10/2022 08:43

I've not been offered a code to reapply, just letter saying its closing. DP (same household) has been invited to apply with reminders too.

From this thread, it looks a trend that the man is sent a code but the woman not. We spend same amount on card and pay in full, similar credit ratings. He does earn more but not by much.

Hacked off, so I've gone with Halifax for the cashback. I bank with them anyway and customer service has been good. Did think about Amex but it's not accepted at loads of shops locally.

Theredjellybean · 02/10/2022 21:31

I also not been sent anything about new card, just letter saying old one closing.
I am account holder, dp has second card on account.
We spend up to £3k monthly, pay it all off in full, no bad credit scores etc... But heard nothing. I've gone for BA executive club Amex for avios pts and companion flight voucher. Plus barcleycard mastercard avios for back up.
Free flights here we come...

goodnighthunny · 02/10/2022 21:41

Don't get me started. I'm irate with JL. First they close down my local store. Then they take away my fucking Partnership card. I had a credit limit of 25k. It is now 6k. I didn't even use the 25k, but it's the fact that they have decided I can't have it that pisses me off. I have paid off my balance in full every month since the beginning of Partnership credit cards. It seems from some research that this is not what they want. They want people who pay lots of nice interest. Fuckers.

Though they're not the only fuckers. I have been turned down by other credit card companies. I own several properties outright, and have lots of money in the bank. But apparently having an income from property makes you a bad credit risk. Even though I've been paying off credit cards on the nail every month for over 30 years, and have also managed to pay off several mortgages too, including on my own home.

Fuckers, the lot of them.

@Bouncealot my card was pink, too!

goodnighthunny · 02/10/2022 21:45

And while we're at it: I used my JL card for big purchases precisely for the vouchers. If I'm not going to get those, I might as well use my debit card.

BTW, John Lewis (in case anyone who works for JL is reading): I bought a washing machine for over £1k and a tumble dryer for £900 last week. I did not buy them from John Lewis. I would have done previously. JL have pissed me off beyond belief, and I will not shop there again. And I am - was - their classic well-off middle class female customer.

notputtingtheheatingonyet · 02/10/2022 21:47

I decided not to reapply and went for an avois Barclaycard instead- they gave me a £20k credit limit - JL one was £13k. I also pay the full amount every month and have various other cards and no real income - was approved in about 10 seconds so worth a try?
