Does anyone have a John Lewis Partnership credit card?

I've received a letter saying the partnership card is closing from October. Does anyone know why this is?

I thought they said a while ago they were just changing the card, not stopping it altogether!

New Day are a subprime credit card outfit and run a lot of the store cards plus the Amazon credit card. I had some dealings with them when a relative died and I did not like their idea of what constituted customer service. They were very pushy and unpleasant about recovering a tiny amount on the relative’s card. I’ll miss the JLP card but won’t go with New Day.

HideTheCroissants · 03/09/2022 22:05

I did the online form for DH today. Within 15 minutes he had an email confirming acceptance, a bigger credit limit and the additional card for me.

rarely have to use customer services TBH so we will see what happens….

Apparently I'm not eligible - no idea why. I earn £50k and our household income is mid 6 figures, we're early 40s, homeowners with no mortgage and no other debts. I've been a customer for more than 10 years and always paid my bill in full.

Makes me wonder who they are accepting!

@schmalex maybe you just don't make them enough money and they'd rather someone who kept a balance and paid interest?

Frustrating for you!

I wonder if JL have had any negative feedback?

FayeGovan · 03/09/2022 22:25

I think they wont say if they do

BringOnSummerHolidays · 03/09/2022 22:31

I gave the best negative feedback by not reapplying.

Just completed the application. Was a bit apprehensive after reading some negative experience on MoneySavingExpert.com, but it worked okay for me.

Couple of things:

  • Triple points for 90 days on the new card
  • John Lewis is still the credit intermediary when you e-sign contract
  • Despite what is says on MSE.com, the application is not subject to credit check, as only existing JLPC holders are invited to apply for new card at this stage
  • After successful application, you can immediately apply for additional cardholders, and the cardholder information was pulled through from the old account
  • You can still ask for paper statements

How do you know re credit check please? And if there isn't one why are being being declined and how are credit limits going up/down?

Lots on Trustpilot, most people that seem to have been refused a card are older, pay off in full and have quite large credit limits going by the bad reviews. I am all these things so have not applied for the new card.

User148563 · 03/09/2022 22:37

There is a hard credit check

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 03/09/2022 22:41

I’m not re applying. will just use my Amex , also had security issues with JL and had almost stopped using it altogether anyway.

FayeGovan · 03/09/2022 23:55

I wonder the real reason they have changed supplier?

StrangerThisWay · 04/09/2022 00:01

We had our credit limit reduced and I couldn't be added as a secondary, no idea why. We have a Tesco card which we use more anyway and it's always been reliable, so I think we'll just ditch JL.

ColoursAndRainbows · 04/09/2022 01:19

The letter I received today sounded like it was encouraging me NOT to apply! Gave me a reference code to use but said something like you may prefer to apply for a card with another provider that better suits your circumstances! Be bloody annoyed if I waste a hard credit check to be turned down for a card I have had for ten years.

ColeensBoot · 04/09/2022 04:38

There's a times article on this that explains more. There's a lot of pissed off people out there

Wonder if they will lose more customers? I know a few people who aren’t reapplying.

Good article thanks for the token Coleen

User148563 · 04/09/2022 06:16

Thanks for the Times article ColeensBoot

Reminder to everyone to check their points, only complete 500 points qualify for vouchers, I am 4 points off next 500 so will do one more Waitrose shop then call it a day with JL card as not planning any larger JL purchases and only top up shop at Waitrose

Butterflysize · 04/09/2022 06:35

I think I’m going to ditch it tbh, not been impressed with various things - even though I love the vouchers - and I’m buggered if I’m going to effectively go through the process of applying for a new card when I could do that and get a better deal elsewhere. Will probably just use my Amex instead

MissMarpleRocks · 04/09/2022 07:54

Wonder how many customers they will lose & whether it will be worth it for them. My sister thinks this is the end of JL. I said not with the amount I spend in waitrose & JL. But I may as well do more of my shopping with Ocado or in M&S anyway.

PriamFarrl · 04/09/2022 08:28

I had a letter to say it’s changing but nothing since. To be honest I only used it in Waitrose or John Lewis now. I used to use it with Ocado as to start with that was double points.

I mainly use my Amex cash back platinum. I’ve got £60 cash back this year. They also have offers throughout the year, the best one is in December though when they have a deal that if you spend £10 in independent retailers then you get £5 back!
If anyone wants a referral code you get £30 (I think) as do I.

That’s annoying @schmalex I was worried when I read your post because DH is our high earner (a bit more than you) and my earnings take us nowhere near six figures. We also own outright and pay off in full every month.
Maybe give them a call… there may have been an error…..

HideTheCroissants · 04/09/2022 10:20

Anyone worried about “effectively going through the process of applying for a new card” - my experience was that it took just a few minutes. Used the code emailed to DH, ticked the box agreeing to all details being pulled across from the old card, put in his and my up to date salaries (unsurprising considering the salary details haven’t been requested since we got the card in about 2006). They sent a code to his mobile (there was a landline option). Put in code. Agreed to Ts&Cs. Confirmed acceptance subject to hard credit check. Less than 15 minutes later DH had an email saying all good and cards on the way.

We were unsure having read some posts on here as we always pay off in full and get a couple of hundred pounds in vouchers every four months which we use to treat ourselves or the children (if they’re very lucky).

We will see how this goes and if we don’t like it we will look for another cash back card - but not Amex for us because too many places don’t
accept it.

Most places take Amex these days. I always have a back up but it’s generally not a problem.

Most smaller businesses around here don’t take it. The corner shop, all but one (a large chain) of the pubs I frequent, the butchers, the bakers (we don’t have a candlestick maker), my hairdresser - they all have a sign saying they don’t accept Amex. I’ve been told it’s because Amex have a higher surcharge than other card providers but as I’m not in that business I’ve no idea if it’s true.

I know I could just have another card for the occasions when Amex is not accepted but I don’t want the faff of servicing two cards. DH and I just have the one shared account and make the one lump payment each month. (Maybe ‘cos we’re lazy 🤭).

Callmecordelia · 05/09/2022 06:19

We decided to apply after all, because DH likes the vouchers, and we thought non legacy applicants might not get as many. Smooth process, pretty easy. We pay the card off every month and have done since we got it nearly 20 years ago. The credit limit is reduced a bit, not much, but it is sufficient for our needs.

I'm still sceptical about New Day, but they have done a good job with this transfer website. It's very slick.
