The wonder of cake fridges.

I live somewhere quite remote and very safe.
We have a lot of cake fridges.
Basically, they're cake honesty boxes. A Stand up fridge or cupboard by the side of the road, maybe near a house, maybe quite on its own, filled with gorgeous tray bakes, where you just help yourself, put the money in the tin, and shove the cake in your face.
Nobody steals, nobody ruins it, everyone just eats cake.
The world would be a much better place if there were more cake fridges, and less conflict. 😔

I was "shocked" to see these in the last series of Shetland.

I mean, it would last less than 5 minutes in South London but I can dream...

mountainsunsets · 20/08/2022 08:23

We have tons here too.

They're fab Grin

What?!

Sounds like a dream.... 🍰🧁

Who replenishes them? Are they expensive?

What?! Oh that sounds delightful! I live in London and I can’t imagine that!

Do you ever make them?

How do you know if they’re fresh or gone bad?

ScootyAlan · 20/08/2022 08:27

They are run by individual locals. They fill up when they're empty. They're usually about 3 or 4 quid a box, which will have a really decent amount of cake in. The people round here REALLY know how to make good cake. 😆

My boys would absolutely love that! Where do you live? I can't imagine ever seeing one of those where we live. Sounds great!

BuenoSucia · 20/08/2022 08:27

They’re not there long enough to go bad! 😂

yes, but we are extremely lucky OP to live in a place like this where people generally aren’t dicks.

ScootyAlan · 20/08/2022 08:28

I don't need to make cake. I live near one. 😊
And they're never bad, the cakes don't hang around long enough to go off.

We have cake, veg, egg, juice, jam and chutney honesty boxes - although not as many as we used to and lots of them have CCTV because people are twats and nick stuff. I fondly remember a pasty box from my youth - fresh pasties outside someone's house, 50p each!

They are a wonderful thing and I'm so pleased people still want to do it.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 20/08/2022 08:30

We cycle a lot. The sight of a cake fridge always gladdens my heart.

ScootyAlan · 20/08/2022 08:30

It's rather gorgeous, isn't it? 😊

WithIcePlease · 20/08/2022 08:31

So if you are somewhere remote, it's presumably a small community and you know who has made them too?
It sounds heavenly
Mind blown by this idea!

BuenoSucia · 20/08/2022 08:32

The midges are really bad today so I think I might go to the cake fridge. Plans made! 😂

ScootyAlan · 20/08/2022 08:34

It's blowing a gale today. No midges here thank god.

Ponders swapping South East countryside for remote location and cake fridges. No brainer! Ugh, I am so jealous. What flavour cakes OP? Please indulge me 😂

BuenoSucia · 20/08/2022 08:35

@WithIcePlease yes, we know who’s made them. There’s one I won’t buy from because the woman’s a fud and she’d use engine oil rather than butter if she could get away with it to save a few pennies.

PriamFarrl · 20/08/2022 08:36

By fridge, do you literally mean fridge, as in plug in electrical job? How does that work?

Blackdiame · 20/08/2022 08:38

There's one near us the next village over. I always stop if we're passing through on the way back home from the city. They sometimes have jam, curds and bread too.

Iamsodonewith2020 · 20/08/2022 08:39

Inteterested in how this might work as i live 5 miles from nearest shop and our village is crying out for some sort of food type fridge

ScootyAlan · 20/08/2022 08:39

Lots and lots of tiffin in many different flavours, malteser, mint aero, white chocolate... Brownies, blondies, lemon drizzle, millionaires shortbread, the list is huge.

HairyToity · 20/08/2022 08:39

Where do you all live for cake boxes? I'm in a rural village in North Wales. We have honesty boxes for eggs, fruit/ veg, occasionally jars of jam, but never ever cake.

WhereToGoFromHere33 · 20/08/2022 08:39

Please will you upload a photo from your next visit? Grin

ScootyAlan · 20/08/2022 08:40

Just an un plugged fridge usually. They're cool and weather proof, and opened often so they don't go nasty inside.

OP posts:
mountainsunsets · 20/08/2022 08:41

I'm in Cumbria and there are loads here.

They sell stuff like brownies, tiffins, gingerbread, cookies, flapjacks, muffins, cupcakes. Some are hooked up to proper electric and have instant coffee, cold drinks and ice cream too Grin

FrancescaContini · 20/08/2022 08:41

Photos please!! Sounds heavenly! How do you not become the size of a small house?! Good cake soothes the soul.
