The wonder of cake fridges.

I live somewhere quite remote and very safe.
We have a lot of cake fridges.
Basically, they're cake honesty boxes. A Stand up fridge or cupboard by the side of the road, maybe near a house, maybe quite on its own, filled with gorgeous tray bakes, where you just help yourself, put the money in the tin, and shove the cake in your face.
Nobody steals, nobody ruins it, everyone just eats cake.
The world would be a much better place if there were more cake fridges, and less conflict. 😔

WHAT!!!
This would literally be my dream!

I’m in Cornwall and we have eggs, jams, honey etc but never cake!!

I’m moving asap!

UnboxedThoughts · 20/08/2022 09:30

This thread absolutely confirms that I will be retiring to live in Cumbria as soon as humanly possible.

YouBetter · 20/08/2022 09:31

I mean, it would last less than 5 minutes in South London but I can dream...

@SoupDragon emptied, shat on by a lockdown ‘puppy’ and graffitied in under 30 seconds. Then reversed over by a school-run SUV.

Of all the threads to not believe, this is the one. I am utterly incredulous that this could be a thing.
If I saw a free-standing fridge in the lanes near me, I'd call the council's fly-tipping hotline.

Saw it in Shetland. It’s a thing.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 20/08/2022 09:36

We had one near us a few years ago, also live in
Scotland but it's gone now. Hope it wasn't because people took the piss.

figmaofmyimagination · 20/08/2022 09:36

And now I have THE YEARN.

It sounds amazing!

We also have honesty freezers for ice cream, plus sheds for jam, eggs, chutney, cold drinks and other snacks Grin

It's amazing but not good at all for my waist!

thenewduchessoflapland · 20/08/2022 09:39

Unfortunately they wouldn't be possible where I live, not only would the contents be stolen but so would the honesty box and most likely the actual fridge too.

WithIcePlease · 20/08/2022 09:44

Can see potential for a themed walking holiday
This has brightened my Saturday morning no end
Thank you OP

capedavenger · 20/08/2022 09:44

Cumbria is not far from me, I'm now considering the possibility of a cake fridge day trip!!

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 20/08/2022 09:48

Christ, I need to move.

ApolloandDaphne · 20/08/2022 10:00

I currently waiting to get on the ferry to Harris/Lewis. I am hoping roadside cake is a thing there!

WonderingWanda · 20/08/2022 10:01

Sounds amazing but would be seriously detrimental to my waistline. I am not very good at saying no to cake!

That’s properly made me laugh! Yep, it’s a different world in the sticks. You can forget next-day-delivery, but then the front door and car are left open so the courier/postie can just pop it in the kitchen or on your car seat if they see you parked up.

viques · 20/08/2022 10:03

Blimey, round our way even the old phone box turned into a book swap got vandalised. I dread to think what they would do with cake, probably lace it with arsenic.

Bettiespaghetti · 20/08/2022 10:06

Oh man! I thought it was pretty good here in Germany - often along a hiking path there will be a beer fridge (or cupboard, or sometimes in a cool fountain) with beers and bottles of pop and an honesty box. Sometimes there might be some dried meat or würst too, but cake would be a game changer!

viques · 20/08/2022 10:07

Just googled images, wow. The cake fridges are amazing, and so many of them. Slightly less enthused about the one labelled Artisan Mustard, but I am sure it has followers.

Ffsjustltb · 20/08/2022 10:07

Haha this sounds good. We currently have an old fridge in the front garden. Waiting for the council to pick it up. I might put some cake in it and see how that goes down 😄

MisterMeaner · 20/08/2022 10:08

I'm thinking of making some cakes today, and leaving them out for ramblers, to see what happens. Presumably I could use a picnic box (cool box) as I don't have a random spare fridge to hand.
Just wondering how to word the sign/explain what it is, as it's not part of the culture round here...
Or would I be making a rod for my own back, encouraging people to bang on my door demanding cake every time they pass by?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/08/2022 10:09

we have eggs
courgettes
plants
and an honesty box
but a cake fridge, that is just AMAZING

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 20/08/2022 10:10

Mmm. Cake...

The wonder of cake fridges.
Oblomov22 · 20/08/2022 10:10

Sounds heavenly. Not just the cake, but the principle.

AForkTooFar · 20/08/2022 10:21

We have these in my village and nearby villages in Hampshire. In outdoor wooden cupboards though, not fridges. Also ones filled with snacks and sweets.

rollonbacon · 20/08/2022 10:27

Were we happy to find this on the West Highland Way!
