The wonder of cake fridges.

I live somewhere quite remote and very safe.
We have a lot of cake fridges.
Basically, they're cake honesty boxes. A Stand up fridge or cupboard by the side of the road, maybe near a house, maybe quite on its own, filled with gorgeous tray bakes, where you just help yourself, put the money in the tin, and shove the cake in your face.
Nobody steals, nobody ruins it, everyone just eats cake.
The world would be a much better place if there were more cake fridges, and less conflict. 😔

I’m on a little Scottish island. The fridges aren’t plugged in (we don’t sweat up here… 😂) - so more like a display cupboard than a chiller but being a sturdy fridge protected from the elements.

Photos please!! Sounds heavenly! How do you not become the size of a small house?! Good cake soothes the soul.

The menopause and some interesting medication helps. 😏

I'm in Cumbria and there are loads here.

They sell stuff like brownies, tiffins, gingerbread, cookies, flapjacks, muffins, cupcakes. Some are hooked up to proper electric and have instant coffee, cold drinks and ice cream too Grin

We’re off to Cumbria now 😂 homemade gingerbread…I’m drooling…

How's the murder rate? 😂

How/when did this lovely tradition begin? It’s fascinating!

Locally we have honesty boxes for eggs / jams / chutneys/ garden plants but always in places where you’re unlikely to get anti social behaviour.

mountainsunsets · 20/08/2022 08:46

@FrancescaContini they're amazing but not so good for your waistline 🤣

Rightmove needs a cake fridge filter option!

Please can someone tell me where I can find a cake fridge as I am all about UK holidays at the moment and the kids would love to find one of these.

You need to go a veeeeeery long way north. 😆

Murder rate is terrible! Nobody’s going to steal from the cake fridge, but watch your back everywhere else!

How far north? Arctic circle?!

JennyForeigner · 20/08/2022 08:53

Just sent this to my dad's partner. She's an incredible trained baker and they have retired to Devon near the cliff paths CakeFlowers

FrancescaContini · 20/08/2022 08:53

(Although probably no fresh eggs etc so it can’t be that far…)

miserablecat · 20/08/2022 08:53

I've never heard of this before!
And now I feel I've missed out!

ScootyAlan · 20/08/2022 08:55

Not quite. Still in the OK. Eggs get their own honesty boxes.

Closer to the arctic circle than London. By a long shot!

Aussiedream · 20/08/2022 08:57

I came across these in a remote part of Cornwall. AMAZING

MisterMeaner · 20/08/2022 09:10

Of all the threads to not believe, this is the one. I am utterly incredulous that this could be a thing.
If I saw a free-standing fridge in the lanes near me, I'd call the council's fly-tipping hotline.

deeperthanallroses · 20/08/2022 09:14

If I still lived in the uk, I would immediately be planning a holiday with touring cake fridges as the central focus.

Me too. Has someone out there put together a route featuring cake highlights?

I’m guessing Shetland?

It is absolutely true, I swear on my child's life. 😊
It's bloody marvellous. When I go out later, I will take some pictures.

We stumbled upon one of these on the cinder track between Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay. My son was so excited by the concept, he's been saving his pocket money for when we go again!

Maybe. You don't really need a map. Drive straight and you'll eventually find one. 😊
Just watch or for the murderers. 😂

I can legitimately confirm the ones in Shetland are very real and very good!

FrancescaContini · 20/08/2022 09:28

Shetland! Charity shop suitcases bought by a knitted waistcoat wearing librarian?!
