The wonder of cake fridges.

I live somewhere quite remote and very safe.
We have a lot of cake fridges.
Basically, they're cake honesty boxes. A Stand up fridge or cupboard by the side of the road, maybe near a house, maybe quite on its own, filled with gorgeous tray bakes, where you just help yourself, put the money in the tin, and shove the cake in your face.
Nobody steals, nobody ruins it, everyone just eats cake.
The world would be a much better place if there were more cake fridges, and less conflict. 😔

Oh man! I thought it was pretty good here in Germany - often along a hiking path there will be a beer fridge (or cupboard, or sometimes in a cool fountain) with beers and bottles of pop and an honesty box. Sometimes there might be some dried meat or würst too, but cake would be a game changer!

We went to Tokyo about 20 years ago and spent a day at the coast. There was a little map advertising a walking trail through the woods that would take you back to the train station. Seemed like fun so we set off. The problem was that all the signs were in Japanese and we soon got lost. I had visions of us being an item on the news about two stupid English people who walked this mountainous trail without the proper clothing etc. We got to a clearing at the top of a hill and there was a tiny Buddhist temple and a vending machine!

WHAT!!!
This would literally be my dream!

I’m in Cornwall and we have eggs, jams, honey etc but never cake!!

I’m moving asap!

Oh but we do! We happened upon one somewhere near Crantock. Selection of delicious traybakes which were just the ticket for our long walk.

They sound amazing in themselves, but tbh, a place where they are possible sounds idyllic to me. Lived in London too long Sad

Love them, but they're terrible for my waistline. They're not fridges locally to me though, tend to be made of wood not sure why as the weather is shit and fridges would be far better. I'm quite a fan of the jam and cordial ones too

This thread MADE me buy a slab of lemon drizzle this morning. It was heaven.

We saw lots of roadside tables/stalls with honesty boxes on last year’s holiday in Yorkshire, but (lovely as they were) none reached these levels of architectural sophistication!

I've sampled cakes in North-East Scotland (shepherd's hut), near Loch Tay (box), on the island of Great Bernera (off Lewis) (another box) but not an actual fridge. Noting all these other locations, thank you!
Take plenty of cash :-)

bowchicawowwow · 20/08/2022 21:56

Never seen an actual fridge, but we live near a national trust village and visit sometimes for a mooch around. Lots of the houses have homemade food, soaps and arts and craft stuff on their doorsteps and you just post the money through the letterboxes. Sometimes there is a bit of gutter wedged in the letterbox so you can slide the cash down and into a jar on the other side. The dc think those ones are the best Grin

God, that sounds so civilised...

@Johnnysgirl it's Lacock in Wiltshire. Really pretty. Could never afford to live there and we look very out of place when we walk around it!

I think I probably would too 😁 Sounds amazing, though.

I have very fond memories of a strawberry vending machine I stumbled across in the Dutch countryside. It only sold punnets of strawberries. They were delicious!

Near me there is a farm which has a milkshake vending machine - made with fresh milk from the farm. You fill up litre bottles 😁😁😁

Jaffa cake cheesecake? Dear Lord…

gogohmm · 22/08/2022 07:37

The only place I've ever seen this was on Shetland, and not in Lerwick. Off there for midsummer next year so will be partaking then.

Here there's eggs, vegetables, firewood, jams and honey on my way to work. There's a farm with bacon and sausages outside but the fridge has a combination lock and you have to pay on the internet and you get the code except they haven't changed it in the 18 months since I discovered it!

hattie43 · 22/08/2022 07:42

What a wonderful idea . Sadly they would be stolen where I live

SingingSands · 22/08/2022 08:12

There's a tablet fridge near my parents! I can't drive past it without stopping for whisky tablet.

Last time I checked, there's a lady in Lerwick who runs a fridge filled with all kinds of gorgeous desserts and cheesecakes. There's loads of fridges all over shetland now.
