The 'heatwave'

abovedecknotbelow · 14/08/2022 01:26

Don't get me wrong it's been hot here in SE London, but pleasant with a breeze. The house is now light duvet weather, in a Victorian terrace.

The local reservoir is fucked but the local lake / river is higher than normal this time of year.

Anyone actually really hot, where are you in the uk?

It was 34° here yesterday (hertfordshire) and stayed very warm overnight.
I'm not sure why you've put a heatwave in inverted commas , the definition of a heatwave is 3 consecutive days over a certain (above average) temperature. For my area its 28°, it might ge higher in London but we have had, or are experiencing several days over 30° in London and the South East....hence its a heatwave.

KangarooKenny · 14/08/2022 07:24

We had a breeze in the NW yesterday, and got one today, but it’s still damn hot. But I’ve had enough of it. Can’t wait for frosty mornings and wrapping yourself up in your duvet at night.

carefullycourageous · 14/08/2022 07:26

There is a small but determined wave of climate change denial every time there is evidence of the reality. Heatwaves in inverted commas is a way of implying things are not really happening.

MrsDThomas · 14/08/2022 07:30

Cooler this morning in Snowdonia. When I got up the sun hadn’t come over the mountain, but i do live 1000ft above sea level so its gonna be cooler.

can’t wait till winter! This heat isn’t keeping me motivated.

Ugh I feel you, same location!
It was too hot to do anything

Hotterthanhell · 14/08/2022 07:45

We got back from hols (up north) yesterday to 36c temp in the house and it took hours to bring the temp down to under 30c - even though we had left all the blinds and curtains shut.

I hate this weather with a passion, roll on autumn!🍁🍂🍁

Samanabanana · 14/08/2022 07:56

You're totally right OP, this isn't a heatwave at all. It's definitely not been a solid 26° in my house for a week at all. I've had the thermals and winter duvets out and everything.

Wincher · 14/08/2022 08:02

It's certainly crazy hot here in east London but I actually feel like I've acclimatised now. It's been hot for so long my body seems to be used to it!

VioletInsolence · 14/08/2022 08:08

We’re in an upstairs flat in a Victorian house in Cambridge. We’ve got two portable air conditioners and it’s still like a full time job opening and closing windows and doors and checking the temperature.

Last night I took the dogs out at 8.30pm and it was 28. Luckily this time it has cooled down overnight so the temperature has reset back to 23 in the flat in the mornings.

I have images of them sitting on a deckchairs enjoying their Pimms as the Earth burns around them🙄😆

Whataboutno · 14/08/2022 08:10

I am done with it now. I have another maggot infestation in the food bin due to this weather and no shady area to put it. Bring on the cold weather!

MrsJBaptiste · 14/08/2022 08:11

I'm in Leeds and have no idea what the temperatures have been, do you all have thermometers all over your house? I do know it's been hot, and haven't shut the bedrooms windows in weeks. It felt cooler last night though and I needed to pull a blanket on top of the sheet when I woke at 3am.

I just LOVE it!!!

tirednewmumm · 14/08/2022 08:14

I'm finding it fine in the shade and even ok in direct sun for short times but I've always had a high tolerance for heat. What I wasn't prepared for was having a baby in a heat wave Confused she won't sleep or eat properly and she's so cranky. I'm bloody exhausted

ouch321 · 14/08/2022 08:35

Your perception of warmth must be broken - perhaps you're off colour or coming down with something - as it's boiling in London at the moment.

Talia99 · 14/08/2022 08:37

It was 34 here yesterday and scheduled for the same today - West Midlands. It’s 23 inside right now and I have all the windows open. Corner flat so windows on 2 sides but no chance of a through breeze.

I managed to keep it to 24.5 inside yesterday at the price of all windows and blinds firmly shut from about 9.30 onwards and blackout curtains closed in the rooms where I have them. I’ll take living in a cave over being roastingly hot.

I opened them again at around 10.30 at night when it was 25 outside.

I closed my kitchen door yesterday and it was definitely warmer in there than in the rest of the flat. I don’t know if it’s the heat of the fridge freezer, the fact the kitchen window gets sun most of the day or the fact I don’t have curtains in that room but it was definitely several degrees hotter in there.

Kittyhoward · 14/08/2022 08:40

I'm loving it as well. It feels like a propper summer to me. But I think I'm half lizard, the heat and sun make me feel alive.

Yep, I am in Norwich, so hot! We are having a party later, gazebo up, huge double parasol up, and we are having electric fans on to keep our guests cool 😎never had to do that before!

imnotthatkindofmum · 14/08/2022 08:46

Absolutely awful yesterday in Hampshire/Dorset (came back from holiday) relentless heat, still air and any tiny breeze was hot! Took until almost midnight to be bearable enough to sleep last night.

It's not really about our experiences though. A heatwave is higher than average temps for a prolonged period. The av max august temp near me for 1991-2020 is 22 degrees. The average max this august so far is 25 so 3 degrees higher than av. this includes 9 days over 25 and 4 days over 30. (That's official weather readings, my own thermometer says higher)

It is a heatwave, we will all detail with it and cope differently.

(Can you tell I'm a geography teacher?!)

TreacheryPepper · 14/08/2022 08:48

Yes. East Mids. It has reached a temp in the low thirties for the past few days. It's like living in another country

Minimalme · 14/08/2022 08:53

Just come back from two days in EuroDisney with youngest son.

Train station closed at airport but nobody thought to let us know when we booked our tickets.

Running round with a rucksack on my back and front, dragging an unimpressed 8 year old and a large Disney plushy to find a taxi on a Saturday evening in Paris was a sweaty experience.

We got back late last night and it felt even hotter here.

I am going to sit by a fan today while my family bring me ice lolly's and cold drinks.

I am heat fucked.

Sand- South Wales.
The dog is struggling, we can’t sleep. It’s too hot, DD has prickly heat. Have had enough.

KilmordenCastle · 14/08/2022 08:56

I absolutely hate this weather. Anything over about 26 degrees makes me feel lethargic and miserable. And I feel really bad for the dc's because I can't take them to do the usual summer holidays fun stuff because it's all outdoors. I can't bare being out in this heat and I get nervous with the kids being out in the heat, even with all the precautions like sunscreen, hats, sensible clothing etc. I don't even like them being out in the garden for more than half an hour tbh. I know I am probably just being over cautious and a drama llama but I really want it to cool down soon so that we can get back to normal.

Summersdreaming · 14/08/2022 08:56

It has been 30/31 everyday here since Wednesday which is unheard of (NW) I'm loving it. The house is cool anyway and it drops to 17 overnight so easy to cool the house overnight. I love not needing to take a jacket or coat out just in case, eating in the garden at night and actually using our sunloungers!!

Minimalme · 14/08/2022 08:56

Also, just wanted to say a very heart felt thank you to the taxi driver who was wonderful and got us to the airport within a squeak of missing our flight.

He managed to make me laugh when I felt like crying and we are so grateful.

ChloeHel · 14/08/2022 08:58

I’m in SE and at 3:30am our bedroom was still 30.8! This morning at 8am it finally went down to 28.8. I’m 8 months pregnant and honestly fed up. When it’s this hot it’s not enjoyable at all.
