The 'heatwave'

Don't get me wrong it's been hot here in SE London, but pleasant with a breeze. The house is now light duvet weather, in a Victorian terrace.

The local reservoir is fucked but the local lake / river is higher than normal this time of year.

Anyone actually really hot, where are you in the uk?

33 degrees in South London. Sitting in the shade in the park with an affogato and a lovely breeze.

BigWoollyJumpers · 14/08/2022 15:32

Currently 33c here in SW Surrey, with no sun, although there is a bit of a breeze. Yes, fed up now, we have had warm/hot weather down here now since the end of May. Bored. Looking forward to Autumn.

DownNative · 14/08/2022 15:32

I'd much rather have the heatwave right now as its really passing down! Strong winds and lightning flashes in the sky earlier too.

The UK has a temperate climate which means we're not too hot or too cold most of the year. We're quite often wet though.

So, enjoy the heat as it never really lasts for long in the UK.

hattie43 · 14/08/2022 15:35

31 here now and getting jaded with the heat. My whole time is spent making sure the dogs are comfortable.
I am praying for some cooler weather .

anon666 · 14/08/2022 15:58

It's all to do with your house, your location, your personal tolerance of heat.

It's objectively a heatwave, but millions of Brits spend thousands going abroad simply to seek out this kind of weather.

It can make you really ill if you can't find a means of cooling yourself down. In this country our homes are small and designed to retain heat.

We don't have the acceptance of habits that help, like a long midday break.

It's unpleasant when stuck in these conditions.

I'm in SWL and it's a lot to do with heat tolerance. My husband is enduring the heat, working in the garden. I'm cowering in the basement trying to stay cool because I get heat exhaustion so easily. I love hot weather, but it doesn't love me.

“So, enjoy the heat as it never really lasts for long in the UK.”

I hate this kind of order. I don’t enjoy it, and even if I did, doesn’t the climate change aspect concern you?

Lightning020 · 14/08/2022 16:18

Try saying enjoy it to most post menopausal women. It is unbearably hot.

Conversely, I hate constant complaints about summer weather. And I enjoy it, yes.

Do you only think about climate change in relation to hot weather? It's not the only indicator of it!

Enjoying hot weather and climate change don't preclude each other, you know.

I haven’t complained, have I?
and I don’t go about telling people to enjoy the weather I like, so I don’t see why you think it’s ok to order me around. I also don’t like other aspects of climate change, which I have experienced and it was just as scary.

Popcorning · 14/08/2022 16:52

The “I love the heat posters and anyone who isn’t enjoying the drought and the highest temperatures on record for prolonged weeks at a time when you probably pay for this as part of your summer holiday” are becoming really boring.

Not everyone lives near you, in your house, has your physiology or necessarily enjoys the same holiday as you.

People are different, who knew? Apparently some on MN.

I’m in the SE. It hasn’t rained substantially for nearly 2 months. Everything is parched. When there is a forecast of rain we’ve had light drizzle for 5-15 mins at a time and other times nothing. The thunderstorms that are forecast are only 40% here and for 1 hr only some days. It’s been over 25 degrees many many days in the last 2 months, over 30 for at least 2 weeks of that, another week of over 35 and 2 days of over 40. I like the heat but it is now too much.

dadadeedadada · 14/08/2022 16:58

Waves from sunny Salford! It's 31 here and I'm working in a kitchen with no ventilation or fans. I'm fucking roasting

carefullycourageous · 14/08/2022 17:01

I'm sick of people claiming to enjoy the heat - i.e. watching climate change happen faster than expected with really shit impacts including loss of harvest and water shortages.

Yeah, brilliant - no potatoes/carrots/wheat and higher excess deaths Smile

Numbat2022 · 14/08/2022 17:02

Mid-Essex here. We had a huge field fire on Friday five minutes away from our house. I spent the afternoon refreshing the local Facebook pages to see what was going on, watching the smoke from the living room window.

It hasn't rained here properly since mid-June. Everything is parched and crispy, the trees are already going brown and dropping their leaves, and I've given up on a lot of my garden as I just can't keep it alive. It is definitely a heatwave.

We traditionally had a temperate climate - extremes are going to feature more and more. We expect more droughts and more flooding, with wider extremes of temperature and more resultant problems including higher deaths and reduced harvests causing increased food prices.

But yeah, enjoy it Confused

Best Liverpool snd we're on 36 today, upstairs in the babies bedroom is 28 degrees with no chance of any breeze, I'm so fed up now x

sarahc336 · 14/08/2022 17:07

Near Liverpool I meant

DobbleDobble · 14/08/2022 17:27

Hasn’t rained since 18th June in my south-east world 🥵

We used to have a temperate climate. In years to come, 2022 will be seen as the last cool summer.

It last rained here two weeks ago.

twoqueens · 14/08/2022 18:03

It's horrible here in SE.

Terrifying that this might be permanent, yes I know plenty of the world has hotter temps than us, but I love our temperate climate.

I am lucky my house is fairly cool, I just have the blinds down and retreat to the rooms which are north facing.

I have only mown my lawn properly once this year as the grass didn't get a chance to grow, it's just been fried to a crisp and is now a dust bowl. I have no idea how the native animals and insects are doing.
I think one of my trees has died - I didn't notice and haven't been watering it.

I haven't walked my dog for 3 days because it's been too hot (I haven't managed to get up early because it's taken me hours to get to sleep).

The temp is actually quite nice now, but I have a banging headache because of the humidity.

I think flooding is going to be bad this autumn.

Dreading work tomorrow as it's even hotter there!

This. I don't book hot holidays abroad because I don't like them lol.

its 27.8 degrees in my north facing living room atm. Dared to think what it is in our south facing bedroom. There has been between 1-3 fires several days a week the last couple of weeks requiring multiple fire engines to attend. It's not just a bit hot.
