The 'heatwave'

Don't get me wrong it's been hot here in SE London, but pleasant with a breeze. The house is now light duvet weather, in a Victorian terrace.

The local reservoir is fucked but the local lake / river is higher than normal this time of year.

Anyone actually really hot, where are you in the uk?

I’m in the NW. It reached 34 degrees here yesterday, and inside my house reached 30 degrees (that’s keeping windows, curtains, blinds closed as appropriate). My daughter didn’t go outside yesterday, and still came down with heatstroke last night. I actually really enjoy the weather outside, just struggle with keeping the house bearable.

Fluffyboo · 14/08/2022 09:01

We are in Bucks, it's been early 30s and I hate it. Last night our south facing bedroom was 28 and I just couldn't get to sleep, even now it's hot outside so we can't cool the house down.

It's oppressive and horrible, I'm just praying for the storms they keep promising but even they keep getting pushed further out

MrsRhodes · 14/08/2022 09:02

NW England and I am bloody melting. My house was 30 late last night. (I don't know what the temp outside is but I am ginger and burnt with factor 50 this week 😭)

Ugh every time I check the forecast my heart sinks at seeing the temperature increasing and the storms going away 😂

itsgettingweird · 14/08/2022 09:05

Hampshire coastal town.

High 20's low 30's here. Nice breeze on many days.

But we have temperatures like that every year.

Admittedly it doesn't often last for weeks on end but the weather itself isn't unusual.

DinosApple · 14/08/2022 09:08

Definitely a heatwave (and drought) in Suffolk.

Temp on the car said 35 when we went to a friend's birthday party mid afternoon yesterday.

Upstairs in our house has been around 30 degrees so many nights this summer I've lost count.

Where we camp every single year for the last 20 years (for a hobby) the river was dry. That has never happened before.

Woolandwonder · 14/08/2022 09:14

Definitely feels like a heatwave in Yorkshire. I've been fine, wfh, staying inside mostly on my time off but pottering in and out to sit in the shade, eating ice lollies, although am struggling at night a bit. DH on the other hand has heatstroke from having to sit in a tiny stuffy non air conditioned nhs office which reached 33 on Thursday and Friday, so spent all of yesterday feeling awful on the loo and lying down and has to go back again tommorow..

Electriq · 14/08/2022 09:17

The difference with this heatwave is that it is cooling down of an evening, unlike the last one, which makes for lovely sunny warm days, but cooler nights easy to sleep through.

Im SE London too, so the weather has been marvellous, I've enjoyed every second of it and I dread winter coming (Hate the cold)

DoubleShotEspresso · 14/08/2022 09:26

ouch321 · 14/08/2022 08:35

Your perception of warmth must be broken - perhaps you're off colour or coming down with something - as it's boiling in London at the moment.

Absolutely this. I am nauseous and find this to be exhausting! It's vile and my brain is fried.

CharlotteSt · 14/08/2022 09:26

South East.

Victorian terrace. House has been cool enough as I've had the windows and curtains closed during the day and loft hatch open. If it's been unbearable at night, I've kicked DH out to the spare room and had the fan on.

However. Today I'm having to do a major clean as we've got guests coming to stay tomorrow night and I'm absolutely dripping with sweat.

I bloody love the heat but even I will be a bit relieved when it breaks.

Toyingyu · 14/08/2022 09:27

I'm in the NE of England so it hasn't been quite as hot here but was still 27 in my bedroom last night and it's now 23 degrees outside already. I don't know how those in the SE are coping to be honest. I'm naturally blonde and very fair like my youngest son and we don't cope in the heat without aircon and pools. My husband and eldest son are darker skinned and have dark hair and are coping much better than us. Must be genes.

Yesterday when the South facing living room was unbearably hot we went to the woods and we felt instantly better. The woods are so much cooler. I could have slept there.

35965a · 14/08/2022 09:29

It’s awful, it was still 30 when I got into bed last night. Could barely sleep. Hoping for some cool temperatures and rain tomorrow, my lawn is near death.

Reallybadidea · 14/08/2022 09:34

Yes, this. We've got blinds and windows closed from about 9am on the south side of the house. Once the temperature starts to drop lower than the house temperature I open all the windows wide and prop doors open so the air circulates. Loft hatch is permanently open. By about 10pm it's perfectly cool enough to sleep under a duvet.

RuthW · 14/08/2022 09:34

The heat here (Midlands) is not pleasant. My office as around 31 degrees daily. House is a bit lower. I'm melting in my menopausal state.

NothingIsWrong · 14/08/2022 09:41

Oxfordshire here. It's horrible. We have a stone cottage with thick walls which is bloody amazing at keeping the heat in in the winter. Far lower heating bills than you would imagine.

unfortunately it is also excellent at keeping the heat in now as well, I slept on our trampoline outside last night and it was so much nicer than inside the house.

Downbythebayy · 14/08/2022 09:45

36 degrees in Bristol yesterday. Vile

ImAvingOops · 14/08/2022 09:45

Those of you opening the loft hatch - aren't you scared of spiders and whatever else is up there?

ShaneTwane · 14/08/2022 09:48

Why is heat wave in ''?

Also I don't even know what the temp was last night in NW but it was one of the hottest nights I've known in many years. I'm 11 weeks pregnant and was sick as a dog last night in my underwear feeling lethargic and unable to move.

Eeksteek · 14/08/2022 09:48

I’m no heat lover, but it doesn’t seem like
that much of a big deal. It’s been too hot in the sun for me most of the day, but as I have work and children, I’m not in the sun during the day as a rule. The house is sitting between 20 and 25 degrees (our high was 35 yesterday) and we have not needed to fetch the fans out from under the stairs. The dogs aren’t even panting. I have a load of frozen water bottles that I shove in old socks to sleep with if we feel hot, but we don’t really need them (like we did when it was 42°C last month) it’s just nice. I am walking the dogs after dinner, rather than after lunch. It’s nice walking in the sunset, but bit of a pain with bedtime. Still, no issue in the holidays.

I’m concerned about the drought, though. My allotment has no mains water, and is a desert. I haven’t been able to plant most of the winter veg and and lots of summer veg has done poorly or just died off.

PinkBuffalo · 14/08/2022 09:50

I am in the SE and the last 2 nights have been awful so hot and sticky
other than that I am enjoying the sun being out

You mean WHOEVER else is up there…

DD and I went for a cool park stroll this morning at 7am, lovely. Just hung a wash out in the garden at 9.30 and it was fucking awful. Inside for the day now with ice lollies and paper fans. If it doesn’t bucket down tomorrow as promised I’m staging a revolt… well, I’m not as I don’t have the energy. But I’ll be really sweaty and cross.

Hm2020 · 14/08/2022 09:51

Georgian house central London boiling every park has turned to dust was even on primrose hill a few days ago and there was no grass to be seen

RampantIvy · 14/08/2022 09:56

I'm on the edge of the Pennines and we have had 29/30 degrees over the last few days, and have a forecast of 31 degrees today. Tomorrow is 25 degrees then it goes down to between 17 and 21 degrees for the rest of the month.

The garden needs the water, our reservoirs are desperate fore water and the cooler nights will make sleeping easier, but I will miss the warm evenings where we can sit outside.

Salome61 · 14/08/2022 10:29

I'm in Northumberland on the east coast, it's cooler today at 20 degrees and we've got a thunder advisory. Definitely not been as warm as elsewhere in the country, but we've still had lots of sea fog because of it. It's not been this warm here since 2018, I find it exhausting and my very hairy sheltie has been suffering.

You sound like me! I have had to have a real battle with myself to leave all the windows open because of spiders, the loft can do one!
