The 'heatwave'

abovedecknotbelow · 14/08/2022 01:26

Don't get me wrong it's been hot here in SE London, but pleasant with a breeze. The house is now light duvet weather, in a Victorian terrace.

The local reservoir is fucked but the local lake / river is higher than normal this time of year.

Anyone actually really hot, where are you in the uk?

It is the humidity that is oppressive not the heat in itself. I lived a year in Turkey once.

If you keep your window open in your bedroom with the fan on and positioned right in front of the window then it makes a big difference. I moved my pedestal chrome fan over to this position in the room and it made the world of a difference before lights out.

x2boys · 14/08/2022 05:12

31 yesterday 8nnthe Northwest and no breeze today is going to be the same, definitely a heatwave

stuntbubbles · 14/08/2022 05:14

I’m in SE London too but it must be a different bit because it’s fucking horrible. Opening the front door is like opening an oven. None of us wore clothes inside all day yesterday. A light duvet would probably kill me!

WaltzingWaters · 14/08/2022 05:16

Well I LOVE LOVE LOVE this weather. Makes moving back home to England a million times more bearable.

Wateringthegarden · 14/08/2022 05:16

It's 19deg on our upstairs landing in Hampshire. I slept under our summer duvet last night as I have every night it's been hot.

Has been hot, but I've acclimatised now so I'm ok. Our house stays cool if we shut everything about 7.30am and open it all up again at 8pm. I do start to feel uncomfortable about 5pm.

Ive got a nice tan from gardening and doing outdoor jobs, plus a couple of walks once it's warm.

We are very lucky though to have windows on all sides of the house and to live near a river, so in a valley where the cold air sinks to at night.

In the winter it's hard, it can be several degrees colder than it is at the top of the hill.

I really have loved the warm weather this year, though I'm up to walk the dogs early and I'm looking forward to being able to take them out in daytime hours again as I'm knackered from setting my alarm at 4.45 every day!

Crappydoo · 14/08/2022 05:40

OP you may not be suffering in this weather but you can't deny that for the UK this is definitely a heatwave..

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 14/08/2022 05:55

Shropshire and its bloody boiling. I hate to moan (I really do) about it but working in this is insufferable, I am a nurse now on a stretch of x3 13 hour days. Last Thurs and Fri were terrible, I felt ill. Problem is we are not prepared for this no air con in our office (community team), the car is roasting and even with air con it only just gets cold then I arrive at a patients house. Urghhhh!!

carefullycourageous · 14/08/2022 06:04

I'm intrigued to know more about the river being higher, that seems unusual given the national picture?

BiasedBinding · 14/08/2022 06:06

My house is fine, we are lucky to be able to keep it cool enough during the day that it’s not too bad at night.

do the hot weather lovers not feel scared about what it means? There have been some really pleasant evening temperatures here but I have struggled to enjoy it knowing that there is a drought and when thinking about the future with climate change

Augend23 · 14/08/2022 06:19

I love the weather being like this, but I am struggling to get the house to cool down at night - it's saying 24 upstairs having slept with the windows open all night, which just doesn't really make any sense to me. It's much cooler than thar outside.

InMySpareTime · 14/08/2022 06:19

The postcode lookup on this BBC article will show what is defined as a heatwave in your area.
Where I am it's 3 days over 25C max temperature, and we're definitely in a heatwave.

stuntbubbles · 14/08/2022 06:28

That’s incredible, @InMySpareTime - my area is hazard score 4, and defined as 3 days over 28 degrees. I’m sandwiches between a score 3 zone – the lucky buggers next to the river – and score 5, the flats on the high street.

TabithaTittlemouse · 14/08/2022 06:28

I love the sun although I’ve not had much to a chance to actually sit out and enjoy it.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2022 06:30

East Midlands. It's been over 30. My bedroom was 28 last night.

ohbygolly · 14/08/2022 06:33

Not in the UK, but south west Ireland - the heat is killing us. Windows open and fans going all night, and it's 27 degrees in the house already. Fighting to keep the heat out during the day. It's lovely, but God it's hot.

Augend23 · 14/08/2022 06:35

(and yes, I do worry a lot about what it signals, and I worry about UK infrastructure not really being set up for this weather - e.g. I would like to get external shutters fitted but can't get the cheap and easy ones because my windows open outwards.

The River Severn is the lowest I have ever seen it, seems strange to remember the floods we had back in Feb.

SNAFU247 · 14/08/2022 06:36

Good for you OP. We haven't slept in a few nights now, which is fun with a baby and 6yo. Yes. It's fucking hot here.

SnoopLabbyLab · 14/08/2022 06:46

Visiting my BIL in France at the moment. It’s risen to above 40 in our back garden in Languedoc every afternoon for 12 days. It is very hot but if you find shade and work on a Mediterranean timetable, it’s fine. My best friend in Perth says she’s never known it that hot for so long even there. Thank goodness for the pool and air con at ELeclerc!

exLtEveDallas · 14/08/2022 07:01

We are in our caravan in the SW for a couple of days. No breeze at all and the weather is in the 30s. Had to take the dog to stay at a friends yesterday as it would kill her staying here - the van is like an oven. At 2am I was sitting outside in he dark desperately trying to cool down so I could sleep. As much as I like hot weather, it’s too much here (and the bloody tide is the ‘wrong time’ so can’t even go for a swim in the hottest part of the day!)

Timeturnerplease · 14/08/2022 07:15

36C in our playroom yesterday afternoon, even with an air cooler on. It’s a ‘proper’ conservatory too - solid tiled roof, minimal glass and we have full thermal blackout blinds.

Toddler and preschooler of course refused to come and play in our shaded garden, instead sweating away in the aforementioned hot box.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 14/08/2022 07:15

I think it was 34° here yesterday, London/Kent borders. Unpleasant, with high humidity, definitely a heatwave. I live on a hill and it's usually breezy up here, but that died away overnight. I will be dancing in the rain/thunderstorms when they come. We've not had rain for months.

cormorant5 · 14/08/2022 07:19

Friday was hell for us, mid 30s. Driving around Bicester and villages looking for houses. Me navigating and DH driving, endless estates.
Reminded us of working down the Gulf.

RainbowToes · 14/08/2022 07:20

I love Summer and usually have no trouble sleeping but last night I had to douse myself in water to cool down.
I have to get up and out early to walk the dogs, zero chance of a lie in at the weekend.
I don't want to wish the summer away but it's so annoying at not being able to go out and do things. I'm in the tinder box that is the South East.

tenbob · 14/08/2022 07:22

SW London…
it was fine in the shade, but the sun felt really strong and the breeze was intermittent

the ponds and lakes on the commons near me are much lower than usual

The combination of hot sun and low water meant all the skanky fishermen were out in force sitting around the ponds drinking and catching more fish than usual
