Middle class life

Not one of those goady or provocative titles. I suppose I see Mumsnet in this bracket although perhaps less so than maybe ten years ago.

I’m just thinking things like Downton Abbey, John Lewis, national trust memberships, NCT classes, Volvos, Labradors.

What else?

But it is goady. What’s wrong with being middle class? I’m not from the U.K. originally but this class marker crap is tiresome.

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/08/2022 20:34

All you’ve done is list stuff. Of course you’re being goady.

belimoo · 11/08/2022 20:38

I'm surprised by Volvos, I thought they used to have the reputation of being old/slow/dull rather than middle class.

SafeHeaven · 11/08/2022 20:42

What about wooden toys in stead of plastic ones?

scandi brands instead of high street etc

Sorry, why do you think I’m saying there’s something wrong with it? That’s not expressed in a belligerent way, just a bit puzzled! The things above are lovely (aren’t they?)

Somethingsnappy · 11/08/2022 20:47

Whuch class do you see yourself as, OP?

Llamasally · 11/08/2022 20:47

Electric cars!

Blueandsilver · 11/08/2022 20:49

Not sure @Somethingsnappy … it’s not really that sort of thread tbh Smile I saw an old John Lewis ad on YouTube and it made me think of what I connect with a sort of ‘middle England’ life.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 11/08/2022 20:50

Again? Has this not been done enough now?

Blueandsilver · 11/08/2022 20:51

Definitely middle class

My god, not another class thread.
(Yes I know I clicked and posted on it!)

HMSSophia · 11/08/2022 21:02

Whatever happened to class being related to abstractions rather than consumption?

Deferring gratification
Thinking in the abstract and of the strategic
No debt
Educate children and hope they do better in life than you
Art, culture, literature all being valued
Life being more than consumerism
Seeing we are all joined in a web rather than separate

Harridan1981 · 11/08/2022 21:02

Round by here it is boats (yachts or dinghies), lesser known watersports (not so much paddle boarding as much now as they're pretty commonplace), grubby feet crabbing, either scruffy old cars or mega shiny biguns that can't possibly squeeze into a hedge or next to a harbour wall.

Dogs are not poodle crosses but Vizlas, labs or Heinz.

Faded chino shorts, artfully casual shirts covering a light tan. Salty hair.

This is very location dependent!

qpmz · 11/08/2022 21:19

Classes don't exist anymore. It's old fashioned. Those who think they're middle class feel the need to categorise themselves apart from others.

AgnestaVipers · 11/08/2022 21:20

Just read Watching the English and have at it.

CrystalCoco · 11/08/2022 21:45

Mumsnet, middle class!?

Are you having an absolute laugh or just being sarcastic...

I live a very middle class life / lifestyle and the absolute nonsense that appears daily on this site is completely beyond anything I'd hear or see EVER IRL (thankfully!)
Most things beggar belief 😅

WaitingForWinter1 · 11/08/2022 21:46

what a load of bollocks. Someone is middle class because they've got a Labrador and a Volvo? Do sod off

Well this is the way I was brought up.

By my working class parents.

CuriousCatfish · 11/08/2022 21:50

MC means starting a thread on MN so you can tell everyone how MC you are.

Good grief, do you really think this? One of the snobbiest and most inaccurate things I’ve ever read on here.

GettinPiggyWithIt · 11/08/2022 21:52

Ooh Volvos and dogs ….. do these tropes never end?

Tell you what, OP, not giving a shit is one of the biggest markers I would say….. and come October it will be about who has fewer icicles dangling from the architrave

JustAsking90 · 11/08/2022 21:57

I don't know, im working class. Is it less offensive that op thinks i dont like Downton Abbey, John Lewis, national trust memberships, NCT classes, Volvos, Labradors or that you think i have no impulse control, am in debt, can't think anything but literally, don't care about my kids education, hate art and culture, and jist spend spend spend in my individualistic life?

KangarooKenny · 11/08/2022 22:08

The only time I ever see class mentioned is on MN.

OhTheLeetleHandsAndFeetle · 11/08/2022 22:12

I am middle class. I love being middle class. I think it’s pathetic to be middle class and pretend to be working class (as is all the rage).

Anyone who thinks MN is middle class these days needs to have a good think. It definitely was in days of yore, but absolutely isn’t any more.
