Middle class life

Blueandsilver · 11/08/2022 20:29

Not one of those goady or provocative titles. I suppose I see Mumsnet in this bracket although perhaps less so than maybe ten years ago.

I’m just thinking things like Downton Abbey, John Lewis, national trust memberships, NCT classes, Volvos, Labradors.

What else?

At least find a fresh angle on it.

What’s the point in page after page of listing stereotypical class markers?

CuriousCatfish · 11/08/2022 22:15

OhTheLeetleHandsAndFeetle · 11/08/2022 22:12

I am middle class. I love being middle class. I think it’s pathetic to be middle class and pretend to be working class (as is all the rage).

Anyone who thinks MN is middle class these days needs to have a good think. It definitely was in days of yore, but absolutely isn’t any more.

And thank fuck for that.

Kualma · 11/08/2022 22:22

Shops at Waitrose

topcat2014 · 11/08/2022 22:24

I am middle class and happy to be.
not remotely interested in stuff.. but I'm fortunate that I could buy anything(regular) that I wanted.

What was the question again?

VeronicaFranklin · 11/08/2022 22:25

Waitrose
People who must arrive at work/gym/school gates with a Starbucks in hand
People who order dishes at restaurants because they contain Truffles...😂

Cam22 · 11/08/2022 22:27

BlueKaftan · 11/08/2022 20:33

But it is goady. What’s wrong with being middle class? I’m not from the U.K. originally but this class marker crap is tiresome.

We like class in the UK. If you don’t, that’s too bad.

Topgub · 11/08/2022 22:27

Denying they're middle class/well off

Talking about hard working ohs and very large mortgages

Cam22 · 11/08/2022 22:29

CrystalCoco · 11/08/2022 21:45

Mumsnet, middle class!?

Are you having an absolute laugh or just being sarcastic...

I live a very middle class life / lifestyle and the absolute nonsense that appears daily on this site is completely beyond anything I'd hear or see EVER IRL (thankfully!)
Most things beggar belief 😅

Do explain. Give examples.

Cam22 · 11/08/2022 22:30

belimoo · 11/08/2022 20:38

I'm surprised by Volvos, I thought they used to have the reputation of being old/slow/dull rather than middle class.

Volvos - absolutely. Tick.

OhTheLeetleHandsAndFeetle · 11/08/2022 22:30

CuriousCatfish · 11/08/2022 22:15

And thank fuck for that.

See, I really miss it. We are all happiest with people who share our values. I have absolutely no values in common with a lot of the people who now post on here.

Mummyoflabradors · 11/08/2022 22:31

Well I love downtown abbey, shop in John Lewis and have 2 labradors and I’m definitely working class!
So what is it about these threads that make working class people feel they are not entitled to any of these things?
Whats class got anything to do with where you bloody shop or what breed of dog you have?
What exactly is so special about being middle class🤷‍♀️

AgnestaVipers · 11/08/2022 22:36

They have more money than you?

JasmineVioletRose · 11/08/2022 22:36

qpmz · 11/08/2022 21:19

Classes don't exist anymore. It's old fashioned. Those who think they're middle class feel the need to categorise themselves apart from others.

I don't think they do. I think others do that. Like the OP.

CuriousCatfish · 11/08/2022 22:37

Awww what a shame MN let the plebs in.

Buythebag40 · 11/08/2022 22:37

People who must arrive at work/gym/school gates with a Starbucks in hand

See that's sooo ten years ago and erm...chavvy (sorry!)

And Volvo's? Who the fuck drives a volvo nowadays? I live in one of the most MC places ever and don't think I know anyone with a volvo! Every Tom, dick n Harry has a Tesla now. Im always nearly being run over by ghostly silent Tesla's!

Ponderingwindow · 11/08/2022 22:38

I find it quite hilarious that people get so angry anytime people want to have a conversation about socioeconomic class markers. Those markers can be both behavioral or based on consumption, but pretending they don’t exist doesn’t change reality. We all like to pretend we are unique and special, but we are all creatures of our upbringing and the environment

it’s something that marketers spend countless hours studying because they want to find ways to sell us more things.

i find the subject interesting because I think it can approached from an anthropological perspective. It’s simple denialism to say that there aren’t things like trends in dog breeds, the preferred method of exercise, or which flavor of coffee to drink. So first we have to identify those trends and then ask, how did that happen? Why did those particular things become popular? What attracts one group to activity A and a different group to activity B.

or in simpler terms, how did I end up buying the exact same color car as all my neighbors when I felt like a was making a special, unique choice.

Waitrose, Greek Island holidays, Sweaty Betty power leggings, Wagamamas for lunch, Lancôme makeup, NT memberships, Whistles dresses…

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 22:40

Classes don't exist anymore.

they do

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 22:42

bloody love my Volvo

HMSSophia · 11/08/2022 21:02

Whatever happened to class being related to abstractions rather than consumption?

Deferring gratification
Thinking in the abstract and of the strategic
No debt
Educate children and hope they do better in life than you
Art, culture, literature all being valued
Life being more than consumerism
Seeing we are all joined in a web rather than separate

'Traditional/original' middle classes were the opposite of most of these things. Consumerism and instant gratification were pretty much the order of the day.
The values you listed seem more traditional working class to me (from a working class background).

midsomermurderess · 11/08/2022 22:53

Oh not again. What’s with people on here and this class monomania? It is always goady. It’s always chippy. It is so dreary. Just get on with your own life. You have just one, enjoy it. Man-a-bloody live.

ComtesseDeSpair · 11/08/2022 22:53

Cam22 · 11/08/2022 22:29

Do explain. Give examples.

There must be a dozen of threads daily with hundreds of posts each about people claiming they can no longer afford food or electricity. I don’t care how much deferred gratification you practice or what sort of Volvo you own - if you can’t afford essentials, you’re not middle class.

TabithaTittlemouse · 11/08/2022 22:54
