Middle class life

Not one of those goady or provocative titles. I suppose I see Mumsnet in this bracket although perhaps less so than maybe ten years ago.

I’m just thinking things like Downton Abbey, John Lewis, national trust memberships, NCT classes, Volvos, Labradors.

What else?

Whatever happened to class being related to abstractions rather than consumption?

Deferring gratification
Thinking in the abstract and of the strategic
No debt
Educate children and hope they do better in life than you
Art, culture, literature all being valued
Life being more than consumerism
Seeing we are all joined in a web rather than separate

👏

Decent, good quality clothes. No huge labels; any label must be discreet. Anyone who imagines the Chanel Cs, the Vuitton LVs to be classy are wrong. Some heritage brands are fine. Anything ostentatious or too short or too clingy is unacceptable.

I would disagree with some of this as many mc people can also be into fashion. A chanel woc or vintage Gucci is completely standard but yes no clingy clothes.

I also disagree because that's how I dress but people of a MC background are unlikely see me as 'one of them' because of the accent and general lack of refinement or expectation of appearance for appearance sakes, despite my education and interests being all worthy just like them.

No clingy clothes? Just thinking about the last time I went to Waitrose a young woman was wearing a white ribbed vest with fine navy and white striped wide cotton/linen trousers - incredibly simple, stylish, she oozed subtle money and class - but that vest was definitely clingy! She looked UMC.

My children attended a private school in Edinburgh- the working classes with money did not ever really integrate with the traditional well off professional middle classes- in fact there were regular jokes about drug dealers and strippers. The well off working classes didn’t know the code. All blacked out windowed range rovers, botox, designer coats and bad grammar.

Edinburgh is a truly poisonous place

I love Edinburgh. But it really is a tale of two cities and the wealth disparities are huge.

I spent 3 horrible years there

Janedoe82 · 14/08/2022 17:19

What did you not like about it?

derxa · 14/08/2022 17:40

All the cliched reasons. Not friendly and class obsessed. I felt more comfortable in London

Naturelover5 · 14/08/2022 19:45

That's interesting, why is Edinburgh like this? I know the university attracts alot of UMC...

Good grief, do you really think this? One of the snobbiest and most inaccurate things I’ve ever read on here.

Quite. Gave me a good laugh though

Janedoe82 · 14/08/2022 20:12

Edinburgh has a huge finance sector and lots of people on big salaries.
25% of children are privately educated.

The "traditional well-off professional classes" don't sound very classy either - from your post I think they'd be better described as a bunch of narrow-minded snobs!

I didn't realise, I just thought it was due to the university, thats very interesting. So quarter of the kids there are privately educated, are the state schools good?

Janedoe82 · 14/08/2022 21:38

State schools are good if you are in a very expensive catchment- like I said, it is a tale of two cities.

Janedoe82 · 14/08/2022 21:39

dogcheck- they are classy enough to know their audience 🙈. Birds of a feather stick together

Narrow minded snobs are never classy but many may be fooled by them.
