Yes. Good decision. I thought she might win. What a fiasco and waste of money

The WAGS are so tedious. I wish they would go away. I wish footballers would stop marrying and going out with such vapid women.

Somehow I can’t see many brain surgeons queuing up to marry Wayne Rooney or Jamie Vardy

EsmaCannonball · 29/07/2022 16:44

The day has finally come when I get to compare Rebekah Vardy to Oscar Wilde. What were they both thinking?

Titsflyingsouth · 29/07/2022 16:47

They've both emerged from this looking like a couple of bitchy fishwives tbh.

I echo the point made be a previous poster - the rest of us have all got far more pressing things to worry about than a couple of WAGs having a cat fight in public...

CallmeAngelina · 29/07/2022 17:01

Did Colleen come across as bitchy? I didn't think she had. It was Vardy who had lots of unpleasant remarks made public.

Like come on the thread to comment on this very case that you find so trivial and frivolous?

Anyway, it's unfair to put Colleen in the same category as RV, as has been repeated so many times that she was the one getting sued, so she had no choice but to defend herself, and that was after offering RV an out of court settlement to stop a case such as this going ahead.

latesummervibes · 29/07/2022 17:27

seems totally unfair that CR doesn't get all her costs reimbursed

ImAvingOops · 29/07/2022 17:34

I think CR has come out of it looking very good. She hasn't courted publicity around this case, hasn't been on loose women complaining. She hasn't had loads of damaging stories come out. She was bright enough to figure out where the leak was coming from, kept her cool in public and in court, was honest and dignified and I think people will think twice before they try to screw her over on future.

The winner rarely gets all their costs. You get whatever the courts consider to be reasonable and proportionate. The idea is to stop one side deliberately racking up disproportionate costs (e.g. using a top flight QC when a junior barrister would do, getting lots of unnecessary expert evidence, etc.). The reality is that, in general, you will only recover about 70% of your legal costs if you win.

@Titsflyingsouth what did Coleen Rooney do to merit this?

larkstar · 29/07/2022 18:06

It seemed pretty clear to me that Rooney had outsmarted Vardy - it was clear that whoever was using Vardy's account was involved with passing on the content to the news media - it's very simple - Vardy clearly didn't understand how the privacy controls worked - it was said many times that Vardy was considered to be unreliable under questioning while Rooney was not - I think Rooney has come out of it well - she tried to avoid going to court 4 times - Vardy is humiliated - and could face a bill of £1-2 million. I think she thought that if she denied everything there would be no way to "prove" she was involved - this was a very stupid decision on her part - the judge was overwhelmingly unconvinced and that is all that mattered. IMHO - a couple of primary school dinner ladies could have sorted this out at first break and still had time for a cup of tea and a biscuit.

I was just about to say it's Oscar Wilde all over again.
Will RV be done for Contempt?

Roselilly36 · 29/07/2022 18:22

Vardy has now egg on her face.

If she takes it’s too appeal, she will look even more daft, fool and his money are soon parted, true in this case.

The best thing she could do, is retreat quietly, and wait for it all too blow over, which it will.

CallmeAngelina · 29/07/2022 18:24

Bloke on the bbc news just now didn't seem to think it would blow over for her.
He reckoned this would remain hanging over her for good.

the80sweregreat · 29/07/2022 18:35

I hope that someone close to Ms Vardy talks some sense into her about appealing this
It's a waste of everyone's time and money.
Agree , she should keep your head down and by the next few weeks it'll be all about someone else. People move on.

thequeenoftheandals · 29/07/2022 18:40

Okay for clarity here:

  1. The lawyers:
  • unfortunately lawyers cannot cherry pick clients - yes you can refuse to represent someone if you know, or ought to know they are lying or misrepresenting to the court.
  • it isn’t our job to stop stupid clients from behaving stupid - essentially we advise and we do, until the cows come home and the stupid clients can just ignore us.
2) Coleen Rooney (CR)
  • CR was the DEFENDANT in the case. That means she was served a case by RV - she could either: (a) not respond and judgement would be made in default in favour of RV (which would mean CR paying damages, RV claiming she was wrong etc.) or (b) respond and join the case, and defend her position. ask yourself if someone had chat shit about you, you’d called them out and then they’d gone on to sue you for calling them out, I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t take that lying down….
  • as the defendant CR doesn’t get damages. What she can do is apply for her costs to be reimbursed, but almost always the courts will limit this to a certain %. However what I think will work in her favour is point 3 (see below). RV has massively shot herself in the foot I think with respect to damages.
  • A PP mentioned that CR lawyers couldn’t have been so confident in their defence as they tried to settle 4times. Any decent lawyer worth their salt will always try to show the court that they tried to settle the matter so as to avoid the courts time and costs. We literally do this so that even if a settlement is rejected, we want the courts to keep this attempt in mind when awarding costs (see point above). We do this even when we think we have an awesome case. The fact that CR attempted to settle 4x (and RV rejected, and went on to lost) isn’t going to reflect kindly on RV at all.
  • as a lawyer I’ve (unfortunately) read mannyyyyyyyy judgements and what stood out for me in this reading was the way that the judge has made it clear but not super clear but clear enough, that it’s ‘highly probable’ that key evidence was lost deliberately. That’s so damning on RVs character that ther was no way that the judge was going to award in her favour. And again this judge is super knowledgable and is well aware of the high stakes of this case, and her decision, that she wouldn’t have got this had it not been blindingly obvious that RV was in fact deliberately misleading the case and the court. For me because of this, it doesn’t really matter whether she appeals or not, she’s been outed as a liar based on legal fact.
  • i mean I didn’t know much about her truthfully before the case save as to her getting flack for marrying JV. But during this saga, it’s been so clear that she’s thought she could save face and salvage her reputation (query: what reputation) when it was damn clear it was RVs account who did make the original leaks. She did the whole crying to the press, I’m a celeb and made a whole roadshow with the bouncers and shit, and she just came off as a huge wanker. no one deserves the kinda abuse she got, especially with respect to her kids, but COMEON, read the messages and the language and the abuse she spewed when she thought she was pulling a fast one on CR. Im all for hustling but not at the expense of another person.
  • i hope she doesn’t appeal as it will not do anything for her battered reputation, and for her kids sake just let sleeping dogs lie now. I wonder if JV will stick around cus my days, he looked like a prick in this case too.
  • no further appeal - let’s not clog up the courts anymore than we need to.
  • damages to be awarded to CR - which she then donates to charity
  • we never hear of RV trying her hand out in the celeb world (that includes any fucking tell all memoirs from her or her twatty agent)
  • hopefully Wayne keeps his Willy in his pants l CR continues with her jet setting lifestyle
  • both women focus on their lives and kids and families
  • i can go back to reading Agatha Christie books without thinking of the WAGATHA Rooney correlation.
LivingDeadGirlUK · 29/07/2022 18:49

I don't really know anything about this case and these two, but why do people always come out with the 'They are both as bad as each other' or 'Why are they in court anyway' when someone is being sued. The person who is being sued doesn't have any choice!

TheClitterati · 29/07/2022 18:52

I'm not surprised at the verdict at all.
But I was not prepared for the extent that the judge called Vardy a liar/unreliable witness - what a shattering judgement.

This action was a huge foolishness on Vardy's part from the outset.

whynotwhatknot · 29/07/2022 18:53

i actually think its done colleen a favour vardy refusing to settle out of court-i thnki would make her look like she had something to hide which she didnt there would always be speculation

Not all footballers are geniuses
Colleen seems a perfectly pleasant woman to me

Nanny0gg · 29/07/2022 19:14

prh47bridge · 29/07/2022 16:06

Rooney was the defendant so won't get any damages. Vardy will have to pay her legal costs, although that will still leave Rooney substantially out of pocket.

Why?

RedHelenB · 29/07/2022 19:15

Nanny0gg · 29/07/2022 19:14

Why?

Because she won't necessarily get all her legal costs paid, just a proportion of it.

GiantKitten · 29/07/2022 19:18

The judgment does say that CR should have approached RV directly once she knew it was her account that was seeing and leaking the fake stories; even though RV would very likely have denied it, she should have been given the chance to own up and prevent CR going public with it.
So that will probably somewhat reduce the amount of costs CR gets.
It will still cost RV well into 7 figures…

Sunnysideup · 29/07/2022 19:31

This case that vardy brought was deeply unpleasant. It really does look very clear she was selling stories on all their acquaintances. And then she brought this case knowing she was lying. The whole “me thinks she doth protest too much”thing.

the vardies are multi multi millionaires. Why the fuck was she selling stories for paltryamounts of money about people who trusted her to the sun . It’s really awful behaviour. And the way she talked about them is horrible.

and it seems like her husband is just as bad. He was also lying. I can’t fathom what’s wrong with the pair of them.

Cuck00soup · 29/07/2022 19:42

Because she wanted to be top Wag.

Why she wanted to be top wag mind, is beyond me.

NashvilleQueen · 29/07/2022 19:48

There's some bullshit thinking on this thread.

Firstly the exposure of RV by CR was in 2019. She wasn't to know we would have a cost of living crisis, a war in Ukraine and a pandemic in a few years time. She did nothing wrong by exposing RV who had betrayed her trust and I don't blame her for a moment. I would imagine it's hard work knowing who you can and can't trust in those circles. RV sold stories for money. Like being married to Jamie Vardy didn't generate enough for an income for her. And to The Sun who every scouser hates with a passion. No wonder CR was furious. So all this 'haven't they got better things to be worrying about' is a bit unfair.

The defamation trial was brought by RV against CR. It's clear that CR was right in her deduction that RV was responsible so she had to defend herself when RV wouldn't settle. It was pointed out by the judge that the cost of the proceedings was disproportionate to any award for RV even if she won but still she persisted. I'm sure CR had better stuff to be dealing with than attending the High Court in the full glare of the media.

This is all on RV. You may not like WAGS. You may not like CR. But she's done absolutely nothing wrong here and her statement today was modest and reasonable.
