Most middle class family holiday destination? (just for fun!)

I haven't spotted a middle class thread all week so thought I'd start one just for fun 😜
In your opinion what are the most middle class or umc holiday spots?
Summer:
Any part of France (extra posh if you have friends or family who have a house to put you & the kids up in!)
Italian Lakes
Greek Islands

Winter
Barbados or similar Caribbean Island
Skiing in the Austrian, Swiss or French Akps (wealthiest go to Switzerland)
Christmas markets

This is just for fun & based on the wealthier middle class families I know! They all seem to go to the same places!

I think my definition of “middle class” is being relatively well connected (not necessarily rich). So going to stay with some friends in their beach house (and contributing with wine and a couple of supermarket runs). They might only (only?) do a couple of holidays a year.

The people who go to France then skiing in Switzerland then shopping in NY are rich. But not necessarily middle class.

@CruCru agree. The very MC I know have someone's pad in the countryside to loll about in.. Mainly in the U. K but DH has a work colleague who has a house in France (well his parents). They use it in the summer as it's by a lake & in the winter for skiing. That's posh holidaying imo.

Southern France is middle class, Dubai is new money, as is NYC. (Both still beautiful)

workwoes123 · 10/08/2022 14:23

What is it about the south of France that makes it so middle class? My parents have a holiday home there and we have spent a lot of time there so know it pretty well.

For French people (we live in France) it’s not exactly a posh or MC place to holiday: thousands of French families descend on it every year for cheap-ish beach / camping holidays along the Med.

maybe it’s only MC for Brits? maybe somethings to do with:

  • you need a bit of French to get by, not much English spoken especially inland away from the touristy places.
  • The main things to do, once you head away from the coast, tend to be wine / food related? Classic mc interests.

places like Mougins, St Paul De Vence, Eze aren't middle class? They're an absolute fortune to stay there and definitely not a place for a cheap and cheerful camping holiday. They couldn't be more middle class.

workwoes123 · 10/08/2022 15:39

😂 you are right of course!

In 15 years in France we’ve only gone to the other end, where my parents are (Sete, Agde, Narbonne Plage, Argeles sur Mer etc) I forgot about the posher Riviera end of the coast. clearly we aren’t actually MC. 😂

Naturelover5 · 10/08/2022 15:54

@workwoes123 where do the posh French holiday then?

Bumpsadaisie · 10/08/2022 16:01

Mallorca ( north coast)

workwoes123 · 10/08/2022 16:40

Hard for me to say: I think we’ve established I’m not posh 😂. But the great majority seem to have a big family / country house somewhere nice - the Alpes, Provence, Périgord, over Biarritz way. Brittany is increasingly popular as summer temps go up and up. And if you ask why they are going any where, it’s all about the local food, the wine, the family get-togethers. It’s very very normal for MC French people to have a country place - lots of people I know have an apartment in the city and a country place to escape to. Often it’s a family property (the laws here on passing / selling property to children are very different from the U.K.).

French school holidays are super long - 8 weeks 🙄. The typical pattern is to send them to one set of grandparents for at least a week, then the other set for another week. Or to a ‘colo’ (colonie des vacances) - not cheap, usually activity based, take kids of 5 yrs and up. Then a week or two at the ‘country house’. Only a very few of them with go outside France - why would they?? Everything they need is here 😂.

Naturelover5 · 10/08/2022 17:47

@workwoes123 that's interesting from a residents point of view. I would always have assumed the wealthy French would holiday in St Tropez or Cannes but that's probably more of an international jetset?

I thought a lot of wealthy Russians holidayed in the South of France - are they conspicuously there this year? Or keeping it low key?

I didn’t know that about the Russians. I know that Courcheval was having a really hard time as all (or nearly all) the Russians had left before the end of the ski season.

Judging from when I was last in Dubai for the weekend an awful lot of them were there. But mind you they’ve been going there for years now. And in fact there is one very good hotel opposite the clinic where I go to see my sons Dr that is dominated by Russians and getting a room is very difficult. In truth you wouldn’t really know it was an international hotel.

shaggpilecarpet · 10/08/2022 18:50

@swimlyn , however....... Sutton on sea 🤫

I thought they would stay hiding out in the French & Swiss Alps🤣

How can a city as big and diverse as NYC have a single class attached to it? Surely it depends on the activities you pursue when there?

Naturelover5 · 10/08/2022 22:59

New York is expensive to get to & stay in.

JangolinaPitt · 11/08/2022 07:15

twistyizzy · 21/07/2022 18:25

It seems to be a MC thing to holiday in UK although obviously only in appropriate MC areas and never Butlins/Haven.

😁
indeed!
We always used to go to the Haven site near StIves -gorgeous location and the kids posters us to go to the evening entertainment which was not like anything you’d ever get in Tuscany

Snoopsnoggysnog · 11/08/2022 09:08

LHReturns · 21/07/2022 20:03

It totally depends on where in France and whether you are staying in a private house. Staying in a hotel in Nice is not a high end choice. A private house in the hills behind Cannes and Antibes is.

That’s exactly where I am now Grin
also v MC, and I speak French
Not white though, I can’t understand the PP who said all of mainland Europe is racist. Really, the entire continent? Confused

Naturelover5 · 11/08/2022 09:10

@LHReturns I'm so jealous! More details of your hols please😌

WGO · 11/08/2022 11:06

Is Norfolk middle class?

WGO · 11/08/2022 11:11

Anguilla (not Antigua which people always try to correct it with).

CruCru · 11/08/2022 11:38

WGO · 11/08/2022 11:06

Is Norfolk middle class?

I think both Norfolk and Suffolk are.

Sonnex · 11/08/2022 13:03

I've been to Anguilla (work trip). I'd say it's much more UMC if not UC destination though. Business class was full of people going there and then on to St Kitts. One lady asked me if "I always winter in the Caribbean l?" I wish! People who always winter in the Caribbean are proper UMC holidayers imo. Anguilla is stunning but small and like all these MC desirable places, needs a bit of tourism dollar but not mass tourism. Stunning place and lovely people.

Naturelover5 · 11/08/2022 13:46

@Sonnex your job sounds amazing, what field are you in? The most exciting place I've travelled with work is to Notthingham😩

swimlyn · 11/08/2022 18:20

Nothingham is a pretty good description to be fair...
