Most middle class family holiday destination? (just for fun!)

I haven't spotted a middle class thread all week so thought I'd start one just for fun 😜
In your opinion what are the most middle class or umc holiday spots?
Summer:
Any part of France (extra posh if you have friends or family who have a house to put you & the kids up in!)
Italian Lakes
Greek Islands

Winter
Barbados or similar Caribbean Island
Skiing in the Austrian, Swiss or French Akps (wealthiest go to Switzerland)
Christmas markets

This is just for fun & based on the wealthier middle class families I know! They all seem to go to the same places!

Someone upthread said the Maldives is affordable now. Is it?!

Gwenhwyfar · 22/07/2022 20:43

"we certainly couldn’t afford Dubai or Biarritz or in fact any holiday abroad! Camping might be the only option! Maybe Upper Middle Class? Or just rich people."

People on a low income can ONLY afford holidays abroad if they don't have a car. A flight to Spain is much cheaper than a train to another region of the UK. Assuming ANY foreign holiday is expensive is just really silly.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/07/2022 20:55

"Anyone else making a note of 12 pages of places to avoid"

Well I'm not going to avoid the whole of France!

Can't quite remember, I think they meant it's not as upmarket as it used to be..

@Butterforbread as in Dubai vibes? Or more affordable now so more people can go?

ItsnotaHenryMoore · 22/07/2022 23:40

Dordogne's a bit hackneyed now, we're off to a little place in the Lot Valley this year.

Frazzled2207 · 22/07/2022 23:48

Abersoch
but the most MC place I’ve probably been is Center parks

intrigued about the France thing. But it’s probably true

agree dubai is not MC.

SwedishEdith · 23/07/2022 00:18

The France thing is weird but definitely true. We used to go as kids as it was the only destination abroad my parents could afford (refused to holiday in the UK - I realise that is a luxury of choice). But it was a tent strapped to the roof rack and the cheapest ferry. It's not a package holiday destination, never has been so you had to organise your own holiday. Presumably that made it less accessible for lots of people.

Don’t think the Maldives is MC - just expensive not far from the Dubai and AI resorts vibe.

Still expensive but more or less the same as Dubai

Butterforbread · 21/07/2022 18:11

Yes forgot about Dubai! That covers both winter & summer! Also forgot about New York, two very MC mums from the school do an annual pre Christmas shopping trip to the big apple...

Dubai is way too tacky a destination to be middle class. Nouveau riche ex working class for sure

It's a very helpful guide to know where to avoid the world's most horrid bitchy snobs. I bet half of you have never done more than a crappo jet to Spain. Italian lakes and MN demographic not really financially compatible

Why are Italian lakes not compatible with mumsnet demographic?

Dubai

Absolutely not middle class, nowhere near!

How is it not? Exactly the same crowd as in our local John Lewis. Also found it incredibly homogenous- literally everyone was white.

Butterforbread · 23/07/2022 10:25

I've been to Centre Parcs a few years ago, found it very artificial, most "natural features" were man-made.. Didn't find it upmarket, a couple of step up from a Butlins type place maybe

OP posts:
Camomila · 23/07/2022 10:44

Italian lakes can be done pretty cheaply if you hire a car and stay in a little village about half an hours drive away from the lake you want

(I'm from one of said little villages, we stay at my nonnas house but the people that rent the holiday flats/stay in the B&Bs are average income Italians/Germans - I know this as many of my cousins work in hotels/restaurants)

Mennex · 23/07/2022 10:46

Well I am MC and like many of the places mentioned here but I agree about Center Parcs. I've been to one and hated it and I also object to being so blatantly ripped off in the summer holidays. I'd rather pay double or triple and go to one of the nice places mentioned where you're not penned in like cattle.

Its definitely the start of the MC holidays journey though for people who have babies from that demographic.

On a serious note, I note the po-faced brigade have turned up, even though this was meant to be a light-hearted thread, so id like to state that I realise how lucky I am to be able to afford 2 or 3 holidays a year and to be able to choose nice places to have them. It's a very different world from my own childhood and I make sure I tell my own children how lucky and privileged they are. I work very hard (like many of course) and have studied very hard to be in a career that facilitates this and I'm not going to apologise for being able to select nice, pleasant holiday destinations that give me a break and allow me to continue to work and bring up children at insane pace for the rest of the year. And dont even think about trying to shame me about my carbon footprint, I've been vegetarian for 45 years so im already in credit compared to anyone thats ever been to McDonald's (and I dont believe limiting travel is the best answer to climate change for humanity anyway).

There's a comment up thread about posters conflating posh and MC, and I'd say CP is the perfect illustration of that. (Spoken as someone who is MC but not posh and just back from a week at CP Grin. I'm not British though.)

Mennex · 23/07/2022 12:26

Yes people i know who seem posh to me are UMC. MC is not posh to me.

And a lot of the holidays mentioned on this thread, or the combinations of winter, summer, spring etc, would be financially well beyond reach of many (most?) MC families.
