Most middle class family holiday destination? (just for fun!)

I haven't spotted a middle class thread all week so thought I'd start one just for fun 😜
In your opinion what are the most middle class or umc holiday spots?
Summer:
Any part of France (extra posh if you have friends or family who have a house to put you & the kids up in!)
Italian Lakes
Greek Islands

Winter
Barbados or similar Caribbean Island
Skiing in the Austrian, Swiss or French Akps (wealthiest go to Switzerland)
Christmas markets

This is just for fun & based on the wealthier middle class families I know! They all seem to go to the same places!

Agree with rural France and maybe Tuscany. In an old chateau or similar.

DangerouslyBored · 23/07/2022 13:49

Galápagos Islands
Sylt, Island in north Germany
Lech - winter skiing
Grindelwald - summer glacier hiking
Zermatt - summer glacier skiing
Okushiga Kogen, Japan - skiing and snowboarding for the children
Nantucket

Chile
Uruguay - horse riding
Mustique
Micronesia - diving
Mafia - island in Zanzibar
Anywhere that involves a lot of inconvenience to get there…

@8656b9787, only if you’re judging by money, and class in the U.K. is not all about money. Although some people do like to think so.

You can be UC with barely a pot to piss in, or have pots of money and still be right at the other extreme.

While on the subject, why do some people say they’re ‘proudly’ WC? It’s one thing to be perfectly happy with it, but proud? It’s not as if it’s down to your own efforts - and you weren’t asked before you were born what sort of family you’d like to be born into - ‘Ooh, working class please!’
I can imagine the sneering on here if anyone said they were proud to be MC! .

Because to some on MN, being WC is the worst thing in the world to possibly be, so the WC caveat their posts by insisting they aren’t ashamed of their WC status 🤷🏻‍♀️

I consider myself WC, pretty ambivalent about it, but I’ve had posters on here tell me I’m MC as if to reassure me because we are well off and live an apparently ‘MC lifestyle’ 😂 being thought of as WC on MN is a horrifying prospect for some

Cranklanky · 23/07/2022 14:27

‘Middle class’ covers so many different types and incomes. The key thing is ‘middle’ . I think many here are confusing MC with posh, or rich , or upper class. The latter three types are all independent of each other too. As for working class , we all pretty much have roots in the working class, even aristocrats. Their forebears often started off as sheep farmers etc. Many of the current MC have grandparents that would be defined as working class, if not parents. It’s all meaningless really. The only clear fact is that certain resorts are definitely NOT touched with a barge pole by MC! Eg- Benidorm etc.

Interesting there's alot of UK places mentioned... I'll add Cornwall

I was thinking Cornwall for a family holiday for sure.

RedToothBrush · 23/07/2022 14:30

Actually thinking about it, the most middle class holiday destination this weekend is probably Dover...

DomesticShortHair · 23/07/2022 14:41

ItsnotaHenryMoore · 22/07/2022 23:40

Dordogne's a bit hackneyed now, we're off to a little place in the Lot Valley this year.

River cruising along the Lot is for the MC. Canoeing along the Dordogne is for the MC who are trying to convince themselves they are still down to earth, WC people at heart.

I didn't realise how popular the UK was until this thread!

Interesting that Sylt is considered a MC destination. It's off the beaten track for most Brits, but I don't know if that makes it middle class. Haven't been, but would like to as I am reading a book at the moment that is set there.

RampantIvy · 23/07/2022 19:16

Is anywhere off the beaten track considered middle class? Why?
DH and I dislike crowds and noise. That has absolutely nothing to do with what class you "belong" to.

I imagine it is more MC to stay in UK and explore rather than go to package holiday to the continent. Probably similar in price but the experience is completely different. MC is about cultural capital rather than just going somewhere for sun/sand/sea???

CavernousScream · 23/07/2022 19:27

The Maldives is for the inflatable hot tub people now.

That's well put & I think you may be right

"I think many here are confusing MC with posh, or rich , or upper class."

The OP said the 'most' middle class destination so I can guess that she doesn't really mean lower middle class. She either means (even if she wouldn't admit it) people with education and status or people with status AND money, so what I would call posh.

Jezebell · 23/07/2022 20:49

@Gwenhwyfar Think you might have hit the nail on the head! Holiday destinations with the most status..!

It’s possible to be middle class but have low status and vice versa.

catmum134 · 23/07/2022 20:52

Class is such a funny concept. I would definitely class my DP as MC but myself/my family are much more WC. In the past year, DP and I have been to Copenhagen, Interlaken in Switzerland, St Anton in Austria skiing, Malta and Mauritius.

I've been to Dubai in the past, definitely not MC as others have said. And I wouldn't class Centre Parcs as such either.

loves2plan · 23/07/2022 20:57

I'd definitely say skiing, Austrian, French or Swiss alps especially. When I was at school all the kids I considered to be posher went skiing regularly 😂

Same as my school... I remember my first part time job & two of my teenage colleagues were shocked I couldn't ski & never had been!

We are MC and found the Cotswolds properly posh./ UMC if anything

That might rule out middle class masses so! DH & I have been out the outskirts & had coffee in a quaint little tearoom but that was it. Gorgeous part of the UK.
