🔥 #Belbek military airfield in the far south of occupied #Crimea is on fire. After Saky, aircraft were moved here because it's further from the front. Likely dozens of Russian aircraft here. Again, this is way too far from the frontlines and out of reach of #HIMARS GMLRS.

(not yet confirmed)

So sabotage? Or special ops? Brilliant however it was done

ISW Key Takeaways

There were no claimed or assessed Russian territorial gains in Ukraine on August 18, 2022 for the first time since July 6, 2022.

Russian sources reported a series of unidentified and unconfirmed explosions across Crimea on the night of August 18.

The Russian Ministry of Defense may be setting information conditions to blame Ukraine for a false flag attack at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

Russian forces conducted ground assaults south of Siversk and northeast and south of Bakhmut.

Russian forces continued conducting offensive operations north, west, and southwest of Donetsk City.

Russian forces conducted an unsuccessful ground assault on the Zaporizhia axis.

Ukrainian officials confirmed additional strikes on a Russian military base and warehouse in Kherson Oblast.

The Kremlin is likely leveraging established Cossack organizations to support Russian force generation efforts.

Russian occupation officials continued preparations for the long-term integration of occupied territories of Ukraine into Russia.

[notedly, the ISW are being cautious about last night's claimed attacks in Crimea etc]

There is a rather unnerving short clip developed of how radiation would spread from the Zaporizhzhia NPP. I can't link it unfortunately but the radiation spreads over most of Western Europe. This is the announcement:
☢️ Scientists from the Ukrainian Research Hydrometeorological Institute under the State Emergency Service and the National Academy of Sciences developed a model of how radiation would spread in the event of an accident at the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The model was based on the weather conditions of August 15-18. Radiation would affect not only Ukraine.

❗️The Russian Ministry of Defense announced today that it might shut down the fifth and sixth power units of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, allegedly due to the "threat of shelling from Ukraine" (the ISW suspect false-flag plans, as said above)

Nuclear terrorism is a typical Russian strategy. Think of the Chornobyl NPP they occupied in March 2022, or the Russian missiles that almost hit the Southern Ukrainian NPP in June.. But the situation with the Zaporizhzhia NPP is the most problematic. According to experts, the scale of the potential threat to all of humanity may be 10 times greater than the Chornobyl or Fukushima tragedies.

(I haven't watched it, but this video was released Сould Russia Cause NUCLEAR DISASTER in Europe? Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant)

The main topics of conversation were the continuation of coordination in the implementation of the grain initiative, the issue of the forced deportation of Ukrainians, the release of Ukrainian military personnel and doctors from captivity.

ALSO, talking of yesterday's satellite news, here's some more good news ! :D

⚡️Ukrainian charity purchases satellite for the military.

Serhiy Prytula, a Ukrainian comedian, politician, and volunteer, announced on Aug. 18 that his charity bought a satellite for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The charity used the $20 million Ukrainians had fundraised for purchasing four Bayraktar drones in June. Back then, the Turkish manufacturer refused to take the money, offering three drones for free instead.

According to Prytula’s charity, they signed a deal with Finnish microsatellite manufacturer ICEYE. The company will provide Ukraine with access to its constellation of SAR satellites, “allowing the Ukrainian Armed Forces to receive radar satellite imagery on critical locations with a high revisit frequency,” the charity said.

“From now on, our army will receive high-quality satellite images as quickly as possible, which will help us with planning the (military) operations promptly,” Prytula said.

Ijsbear · 19/08/2022 09:52

This is not the same as the lease for 1 year of a satellite that was announced yesterday.

OwlsDance · 19/08/2022 10:03

From what I've read/heard from various sources, is that the nuclear threat at ZNPP isn't as great as many make it out to be. Yes, it's concerning, but it won't be another Chernobyl. It's a relatively modern plant, and it has a concrete sarcophagus around the reactors, so although there's a threat of potential leak, it won't be anywhere as bad as both sides are trying to portray it.

notimagain · 19/08/2022 10:13

It's probably worth looking at ICEYE's own press release to get some clarity as to what they have put on the table.

www.iceye.com/press/press-releases/iceye-signs-contract-to-provide-government-of-ukraine-with-access-to-its-sar-satellite-constellation

The main bullet points seem to be:

"As part of the agreement, ICEYE will transfer full capabilities of one of its SAR satellites already in orbit for the Government of Ukraine’s use over the region".

My emphasis on the one, and also "SAR" is synthetic aperture radar

My thoughts - full capabilities means? Visual plus SAR plus??

One satellite will not (AFAIK because I haven't looked in details at things like orbits yet) be over Ukrainian/adjacent territory 24/7, they might only get maybe a handful of useful passes a day - nevertheless it's a very good thing to have.

"In addition, ICEYE will provide access to its constellation of SAR satellites, allowing the Ukrainian Armed Forces to receive radar satellite imagery on critical locations with a high revisit frequency."

Certainly a good thing also to have.

Ijsbear · 19/08/2022 11:58

I have just ordered something from a recommended leather-worker, and realised after ordering it that they are in Dnipro. I was slightly worried after I had noticed, in case they were not trading at the moment, but their site has got reviews dated this month so maybe it will be ok.

Last week Russian stats agency published an economics report for July. Russia's budget surplus fell by 2/3 from 1.2tn rubles to 400bn in July alone.

Overall, tax revenues fell by 26% compared with July last year. Gas and oil tax revenues fell by 23%, while non energy taxes by 29%.

Looks like playing with gas vents has backfired and is biting them on the bum...

Given how the Russian figures are, to put it mildly, being massaged according to most economic observers, I wonder what the true figures are. These are bad enough!

One question, "Gas and oil tax revenues fell by 23%," ... but overall gas and oil revenues are significantly up?

In the cause of pissing off as many Russians without actually killing them , how would blowing up Aeroflot airliners on the ground when empty affect Russian morale and activity ?

Targeting Civair assets, empty or not, would be seen as a very major escalation.
