Why isn’t he just kicked out 🙄?

He is an abusive toxic man. I felt awful watching him, having Survived an abusive relationship. Excruciating watching his family being so distressed by his abuse. Standing up to order on his humiliating screaming. His father tapping his heart in distress. His sister looking agonised. Awful awful man.

He wasn’t tapping his heart in distress, it’s a recognised action to convey a message to play with heart, give it all you’ve got.

JellyBellyNelly · 11/07/2022 07:43

And let’s not forget he could be innocent of the accusations made by his ex.

I think Nick K is what toxic masculinity looks like. And the way we simply dismiss it as bad boy behaviour is why it continues in so many men. No one it tennis goes on and on and is abusive like him

Yes exactly.

This.

IglesiasPiggl · 11/07/2022 07:52

For me, Kyrgios is much more like Lance Armstrong than he is John Macenroe. It's the general unpleasant bullying manner and utter belief that his actions are justified, and anyone questioning that should be beaten down. Even in his movement, you can see he is always looking for someone to be against him.

Benjispruce4 · 11/07/2022 12:29

I don’t remember McEnroe berating his team, mainly himself and questioning the umpire but I could have rose tinted specs on for my childhood.

SirChenjins · 11/07/2022 12:52

I don’t think it’s an either/or with McEnroe and Kyrgios - both thoroughly awful men in their own way. Revolting that money turns so many eyes blind to this sort of behaviour.

You're right. He didn't continually rant non stop for whole games.

Eye opening the fact that people accept how he is - commentators giggling when he said that the woman who was apparently distracting him earlier was the one who looked as if she had had 700 drinks.

Well that actually was funny as he was trying to describe her without insulting her or her clothes & couldn't. The Umpire was being obtuse. So saying the one that looks like she's had 700 drinks was pretty inoffensive I thought.

WinterMusings · 11/07/2022 13:10

I'm sorry for anyone who found this triggering, genuinely.

he is too aggressive to have on court.

he needs help. Serious help.

Hiwever, people do take things the wrong way, his Dad wasn't taping his heart because he was distressed, he was trying to get him to calm down & play from his heart.

He was shouting at the box because he was finding them difficult, he was telling them to calm down, to sit down, to stop saying stuff that was winding him up , they were too much. He'd have been better if they'd watched from somewhere else where they weren't heaping the pressure on.

he isn't always wrong either, if you listen to what he actually says. HE was having to have decisions looked at because they were wrong, he was getting distracted by people calling out who were not told to shut ip or leave.

he needs to learn to communicate better for sure though & his aggression needs to be controlled. I was genuinely worried gir the ball kuds at one point, though, thise that no him we'll say he'd never hurt a child. I was more worried he'd whack a ball in temper and it hit one of them.

he's a scary bloke for sure, but I think he's also very vulnerable and scared himself and isn't being listened to.

Precisely. Had a woman player behaved like that the comments would have been harsh and she would be banned and disciplined and - omg- hated the world over, particularly by men. I’m so sick of this.

SpangledShambles · 11/07/2022 13:46

So it’s his family’s fault that he was getting distracted? Mental health issues are a reason. They are not an excuse for abuse. Nothing is.

SpangledShambles · 11/07/2022 13:51

FiveGoMadInDorset · 10/07/2022 21:54

TV ones were, Five Live were not and questioning why he wasn’t being penalised and apologising for the swearing

I’m glad someone was, well done Five Live. BBC were fawning and being apologists. One commentator almost sounded smitten 😣 I was completely disillusioned by the BBC’s stance. If they didn’t want to criticise, they could have remained aloof from commenting which would’ve been meaningful in itself. But they fawned. 😓

SpangledShambles · 11/07/2022 13:54

Dustyblue · 11/07/2022 05:03

@SpangledShambles I'm sorry to hear that. You're right, in that you shouldn't need to have that reminder simply by watching the tennis.

I see some of this differently, but I respect your experience and your opinion.

Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it.

I thought at one point he was saying his ‘team’ weren’t pumping him up enough, because he was mocking them going silent and relaxing when he was three points up in a game, blaming his eventual loss on their lack of support!

Seems like he is very needy. I think you need to have a tough core of self-belief to consistently hack it at such a high level. Having his temperament is a real weakness, despite his ability.

That's how I understood it too, that he was saying they weren't reacting enough / saying anything during until 40-0 games.

He was obsessed with it. Very telling none of them looked shocked. His girlfriend in particular looked as if she was trying not to react in any way at all and be completely neutral in her expressions.

I think he's unwell. But that doesn't excuse his behaviour at all. It might a reason, but not an excuse. I think it's a huge mistake for his career that he doesn't have a coach.

He's an incredible player and so watchable skill wise. But seems like his own worst enemy.

What abuse?

Kezzie200 · 11/07/2022 16:20

The problem Kyrgios has is that he does, at times, act like a idiot but equally often also talks sense. Far more so than other players.

He needs to spend some of his earnings on getting support and advice in this area, for sure, but please don't assume everything he does is wrong. We should listen to his MH problems as well as criticise. But he's also got no excuse that he can't afford the best.

The dotty dress lady was annoying. Nick had an absolute right to complain. There were a few annoying people around me too, loudly asking ignorant questions about scoring during play. The players wouldn't have heard from our seats but closer they might have. Some people simply don't get it.

The crowd were really behind him, and very few supporters for Novak until the fourth set. So, equally, what was up with him wanting more support I just don't know! He really is a conundrum.

We should try and not fall unto the trap of assuming everything he does is wrong. From our seat we couldn't hear his mutterings and his play is exciting and entertaining. So, if he can get some help with his psyche, and learn to play at the top over five sets without losing it, grow up a bit (put the red hat away at Wimbledon), he could have a fantastic future ahead of him.

Was I disappointed he was in the final? Yes. If I hadn't been ticking off a bucket list item with my Dad I might have returned my ballot tickets for a refund. Now I've seen him play though, I would want to see him play again and I'm really pleased we went (in addition to all the other reasons Im pleased we went). I also hope Nick has seen what he could be and accesses some help.

Benjispruce4 · 11/07/2022 16:40

@watcherintherye he was saying they weren’t saying enough. He said ‘nothing at 40-0, them at deuce they speak up’ I think the ‘ calm downs’ were sarcasm but who knows?
If I was his gf I’d have left him to it. Brat.

Benjispruce4 · 11/07/2022 16:42

I was annoyed by the empty seats. I’d give my right arm for those. Annoying to see kids there too.😂

Kez200 · 11/07/2022 17:44

Were the seats you saw empty all the time? Those around me were full but empty occasionally when they went off for refreshment and got stopped from coming in until there was a change. Or maybe they were Alfies mates! Plus I notice the Royal Box couldn't muster up 72 tennis loving connections.

The people by me only just made it for the start of the game. They'd been in a bar somewhere. Is there a special hospitality room for debenture holders which they use their lanyards for? (I was a ballot ticket in amongst debenture holders).

Anyone wanting tickets do try for the ballot which hopefully they will run again later this year. I've had a few good ones over the years. CC mens quarter finals in 2002, C1 on Men's Finals Day about 10 years ago and CC Men's Finals 2020 (used in 2022).

There’s a whole other world of Debenture bars and restaurants.

Why can't children enjoy tennis? I have been taking mine after school or weekends since about age ten.

Kez200 · 11/07/2022 19:07

@StrawberriesAndCreamPlease

Thought so! Dad and I were in the middle of the debenture seats. Ballot poor mates with our amazon water bottles and very obviously missing a lanyard.

Not that I'd have hit a bar big time in yesterday's heat anyway - I enjoyed watching Alfie play before we went to CC and didn't have any spare time.

Benjispruce4 · 11/07/2022 19:08

@BlackberrySky im just jealous that I still haven’t been, watched tennis all my life and done the ballot every time and yet kids are there before me! 😂

StrawberriesAndCreamPlease · 11/07/2022 19:10

@Kez200 it sounds like you had a wonderful day, you sound like a true tennis fan! There’s nothing like Wimbledon.
