And yet the entire country can vote in an election and have their votes counted by teatime.

There is a huge infrastructure required to allow everyone in the UK to vote in person. It's not practical in this situation.

Postal votes go out as soon as a General Election is called, usually about 3 weeks before the election.

So on your argument we're looking at:
About a week (depending on initial number of candidates, one knocked out per day) to get to the last two.

Then three weeks for the postal ballot (same timeframe as a General Election).

That's four weeks.

Notonthestairs · 07/07/2022 16:58

A postal strike would make things interesting Grin

Will there be a violinist?

I wonder who is doing hair for the groom?

Zonder · 07/07/2022 17:10

Lots to catch up on. Some of us had to work all day today! Today of all days!

Runnerbeansflower · 07/07/2022 17:13

I wonder if the Privileges Committee investigation will still go ahead? I can't see why it would stop...

Lots to catch up on. Some of us had to work all day today! Today of all days!

Luckily had no meetings, and a stack of brainless admin I have been putting off because it's so boring.

It combined perfectly with a day with the news on in the background!

I see that Ben Wallace MP is a Conservative leadership candidate? Northern Ireland can tell you a little bit about him. I hope this is readable - it's difficult to know with the new Mumsnet images so I'll do the Twitter link too:

Sounds like he likes to over-egg his pudding.

Britain will be quids in entering any military conflicts with Wallace at the helm. Close <ahem> links with BAE - gotta sell all those lovely warplanes somehow.

I Hope Dominic Raab tells him no way matey
Find your own venue and pay for it yourself !
He won't , but it would be good if he did.

If it means he goes now I think it's worth a party. Let's just get rid of him.

Biden's statement on resignation with no mention of Boris Johnson

I'm inclined to agree, even though he doesn't deserve it.

Big Dog has had his day.

Big Dog? More like Old Yeller.

Saucery · 07/07/2022 18:47

Ooof, Biden communicating nicely how unimportant Johnson is in the grand scheme of things. That must sting a bit.

More on Ben Wallace MP, Conservative leadership/PM candidate:
twitter.com/MarymoBelfast/status/1542958421573517313

To explain, when Ben Wallace MP was Northern Ireland Secretary, he granted the police (PSNI) 's application for a Public Interest Immunity Certificate (PII) for one of their informers, a man called Robert Howard. This meant that information about Howard could be kept secret. This enabled Howard to get away with the rape and murder of a child, Arlene Arkinson. Her body was never found. The PSNI were aware that Howard was a violent sex offender but he was protected by them and their PII granted by Ben Wallace. This meant that he was free to travel and sadly, as a prolific predator, to commit other similar crimes in England, Ireland and Scotland. He was eventually brought to justice by Kent police after the rape and murder of another child.

Without wishing to derail the thread, the PSNI have not learnt their lesson and still seek to use PIIs today, currently in the tragic case of Noah Donohoe. Some Mumsnetters will have seen and supported threads about young Noah's disappearance and death in Belfast two years ago. Noah's mother Fiona is still having to fight hard for the truth about his death and for justice for him. Recently resigned Northern Ireland Secretary, Conservative MP Brandon Lewis, was until yesterday considering signing a PII in Noah's case. This role has now been given by Boris Johnson to Shailesh Vara, Conservative MP for North West Cambridgeshire.
Please sign Noah's mummy Fiona's petition against a PII - link in the OP here:

Ben Wallace also voted against gay marriages too.

vera99 · 07/07/2022 19:23

Looking like some well-placed and sourced smears which are most probably true are being seeded in MN today. I'm spreading them but looks like part of a concerted campaign. The dark forces of the state are exactly that! Thanks spooks !

MNettersForNoahAndFiona · 07/07/2022 19:28

I hope you don't include me in that, @vera99 ? I'm a longstanding Mumsnetter and many people know that my threads about Noah have been around for a good while. What I know about Ben Wallace just seemed relevant to this thread as not everyone will be aware of it and he is now a Conservative leadership/PM candidate.

vera99 · 07/07/2022 19:34

Sorry, @MNettersForNoahAndFiona - have just looked up your story which is truly disturbing. I tried seeding the lies about his career on a couple of tory sites but were picked up by auto-mods and held in moderation. Maybe send links and DMs to a wide range of journalists, particularly as he is becoming a front runner.

Totally relevant, yes.

In other matters, here are new appointments. I presume these are Johnson's choices? What a bizarre situation

MNettersForNoahAndFiona · 07/07/2022 19:44

No worries and thank you for signing the petition, @vera99 💙

My focus is on Noah and my hands are full with the current situation there, but if you or anyone else would like to share the information above, feel free.

Roussette · 07/07/2022 19:45

In all the PMs I've known and it is many, I've never known there be this situation of an ousted PM staying on? What's the reasoning?

They've been ousted and gone that day AFAIC

Roussette · 07/07/2022 19:47

Has Nadine been dumped? We now have a Minister of State for Digital, Culture etc. and it ain't her.

This week's Popbitch mail shot is out, with a fascinating if not particularly confidently-sourced rumour about Johnson.

"There's a rumour going around about that sinus operation he reportedly had under general anaesthetic. There was a fair bit of suspicion surrounding it at the time, seeing as ops like that generally require the patient to take a week or two off work to recuperate, but Boris was present at both Rupert Murdoch's summer party and a Tory donor bash that same night.

The talk is that Boris wasn't getting his sinuses seen to at all. He was getting the snip."

He needed to be 'done'.
