@Cornettoninja Agree completely. I think (hope) Starmer would wipe the floor with him, so maybe he's not a bad choice? 😂To be fair, at this stage any half decent human being should be able to demonstrate they are more fit for office than this shower.

Cedilla · 09/07/2022 08:10

My feelings on Braverman can be summed up by a comment on Roll on Friday - 'it's frightening that she has no self-awareness as to how incompetent she is'. She’s a total Johnson lapdog, a nonsense-spouting Brexit zealot, who announced her willingness to run for leader without even having the (momentary) conviction to resign first, like some of the others.

And IANAL but the general consensus from those who are seems to be that we have an Attorney General who'd struggle to complete the conveyancing on a garden shed were she in an actual job, as I saw someone put it.

The frightening thing is that she may be the worst of the lot, but the others are barely better. I feel very, very worried about all of this. Though obviously profoundly relieved that Johnson's gone. If only he WOULD go!

guinnessguzzler · 09/07/2022 07:40

@Roussette I suspect with Sunak it's simply that none of that seems quite so bad now that Mr Johnson and his sleazey pals have dominated the headlines for weeks: 'At least he's not been caught watching porn in the commons / sexually assaulting a child / groping staff / being a lying bag of lies'. I remember people said he was done at the time but things have sunk to such a new low that maybe he now thinks he has a chance again.

I agree. Once the field has narrowed as far as a new PM, it will be interesting to discuss on here who is the best of a bad job.
We must keep these threads going to do that!

And I am also very worried about BJ still in post. He is so untrustworthy and is rewarding his pals with a payoff because even if they are out of post when a new PM is appointed they still get the 3 month payoff

He's putting in his favourites and those loyal to him which leaves a really nasty taste in the mouth.

He's even resuscitated a post that hasn't been filled for 4 years... Deputy Leader of the House to Peter Bone who has repeatedly shown unwavering allegiance to BJ whatever he does.

This is a man who is anti-abortion, anti gay marriage and who stood up in parliament and said that the public don't care about Pincher's behaviour/sexual assault

Roussette · 09/07/2022 08:22

Good grief. Steve Baker on SKY blathering on about how wonderful Braverman is. He's sounding like a right arse licker, it's pathetic. He even said she had wonderful charisma!

AmaryIlis · 09/07/2022 08:25

Peregrina · 08/07/2022 23:16

Is it true that Jenkyns - she of the middle finger and the shouting at the crowd - actually used to be a teacher?
I do hope that when it comes to election time, the Opposition leaflets use this to illustrate what she thinks of the voters, and asks whether they want to be represented by someone who treats them with contempt.

Apparently her constituents think she's utterly useless as a constituency MP, in stark contrast to her predecessor, Ed Balls, and her voting history is bad.

Charisma?

Well I guess that means my toe nail that fell of a few days ago and was a distinctly odd colour also has wonderful charisma.

Cornettoninja · 09/07/2022 08:29

It did concern me that Peter Kyle, shadow secretary for Northern Ireland, was adamant that Labour wouldn’t be running any GE campaigns in coalition with any other party.

I think that’s a mistake if any bodies goal is to oust the current cohort of tories johnsonites. The tories are badly bruised but they still have a large following who will be reassured by a change in leadership.

Notonthestairs · 09/07/2022 08:42

I'm not interested in "charisma". Honesty and integrity is what is needed now. Prove to the country that politics doesn't have to centre on pitting people against each other. I don't suppose that sells newspapers however.

I understand members tend to be much more right wing than the MPs so the chosen candidate is likely to be out of step with anyone who prefers a more moderate One Nation style.

the80sweregreat · 09/07/2022 08:46

Was on another thread and Kemi Badenoch
was mentioned as being in the running.

AmaryIlis · 09/07/2022 08:48

Braverman doesn't understand the law, and seems to have no understanding of what an Attorney-General's function is. She seems to think her function is to support the PM whatever he does and however unlawful it is, at least until the point when it suits her personal ambition more to push him overboard. If she were PM I can't see how anyone with half a brain could serve under her, which would leave us with the likes of Dorries as Foreign Secretary, God forbid.

the80sweregreat · 09/07/2022 08:52

Just turned on lbc and a woman on there was saying that Boris Johnson should get his job back , (the one he hasn't left yet .. )
There is still a lot of support for him , baffling as that is.

itsgettingweird · 09/07/2022 08:52

jgw1 · 09/07/2022 08:02

I understand that Sunak is campaigning based on rebuilding the economy.
Do you think he has stopped to think who more than anyone else has contributed to breaking the economy?

Well yes he's had plenty of time to rebuild.

But I think in his defence he's probably had to do more of these big gestures for Johnson reputation that actually the rebuilding bit.

Because we all know if he was actually jinx charge of the budget the poorest would be even more worse off!

Charisma is one thing she certainly doesn't have.

I'm sure I'm on a photo fit somewhere if people not to approach in the town centre and ask about voting. She's made that mistake more times than she la comfortable with 🤣

Peregrina · 09/07/2022 09:01

It did concern me that Peter Kyle, shadow secretary for Northern Ireland, was adamant that Labour wouldn’t be running any GE campaigns in coalition with any other party.

That doesn't bother me - such campaigns look like a stitch up against the electorate. There were no joint campaigns in the last two by-elections - someone in Tiverton and Honiton could vote Labour if they wished and likewise someone in Wakefield could vote Lib Dem. It was also a useful way of shutting up the Tory bleaters who wined about an Alliance because it was easy to point out how Farage had stood down his Brexit party.

The electorate in both cases read the runes correctly.

Notonthestairs · 09/07/2022 09:06

I don't want an official coalition. My town won't vote Labour but they will vote LibDem and we have a decent local MP for once.

Peregrina · 09/07/2022 09:06

I understand members tend to be much more right wing than the MPs so the chosen candidate is likely to be out of step with anyone who prefers a more moderate One Nation style.

This might turn out to be a blessing in disguise because I imagine that many Tory voters as opposed to members are of the One nation persuasion. So choosing a right wing nut job won't help.

Either way, with soaring prices and rampant inflation any one taking on the job is taking on a poisoned chalice.

Roussette · 09/07/2022 09:07

I've had enough of charisma. Isn't that what Johnson is supposed to have and look where that's got us. Give me boring. Very boring. I want to be bored with politics again one day

Peregrina · 09/07/2022 09:11

I don't want an official coalition. My town won't vote Labour but they will vote LibDem and we have a decent local MP for once.

And they can do so safe in the knowledge that it might help put boring old Starmer into No 10, not the dreaded Corbyn.

Notonthestairs · 09/07/2022 09:13

Agree. Johnson straddled both sides - or so many thought/expected - before he lurched right to keep the ERG happy. If they select a "far" right candidate they'll be out of step with a large swathe of the country (no matter how hard Dacre pedals his shit).

It is extraordinary how many Vox pops there have been lately with people who really don't understand what the fuss is about. Do they really think it's OK to have PM who is utterly dishonest? I keep hearing bollocks about "He got us through covid" when we aren't through it and he really can't claim credit for vaccines any more now we are falling behind again and covid is rife. I can only assume that these are people who never followed the rules themselves, as they clearly don't care about party gate.

Roussette · 09/07/2022 09:16

Suella Braverman is like a Jedward or Wagner X Factor moment, says someone on Twitter.
😂😂😂🤣

AmaryIlis · 09/07/2022 09:22

Anyone know why the "To hope Johnson won't resign" thread isn't accepting new messages? Have they finally worked out who the bots are?

cakeorwine · 09/07/2022 09:26

Cost of living crisis
Energy price cap up to £3300 in October
High inflation

Definitely a poisoned chalice

I think I've got it!
1)Get Johnson yo do a pretend resignation but stay in the job.
2)Get as many of the worst cabinet members to run as possible.
3)Pick the worst 2 options to be their leader and put these to voting members.
4)Respond to the subsequent public outcry by saying they'll keep Johnson.
5) Business as usual.

Either that or they really are stupid enough to believe the shit they're shovelling.
