Some bloke (Mark Spencer) who seems intellectually challenged is talking to Naga as I type.

He said he thinks Sunak has done a great job and the economy is in the best possible shape. Deluded is being kind.

Also didn't condone our new education secretary giving a rude gesture to the crowd.

I wouldn't trust his judgement further than I could throw him, and I'm no athlete.

I've had enough of charisma. Isn't that what Johnson is supposed to have and look where that's got us. Give me boring. Very boring. I want to be bored with politics again one day

Yes! I want to tut at policies I don’t really agree with and actively campaign against policies I oppose strongly. Not this rollercoaster of drama. While it’s entertaining in a way to see what slug has crawled out of obscurity to flick the V sign at the public etc etc we all deserve better. Tory, Labour, LibDem voters…..we deserve better.

That should be the public’s slogan. We. Deserve. Better

DowningStreetParty · 09/07/2022 09:48

I am very worried Johnson’s not gone immediately, he is a total security liability with his off the records meetings while in his official role and to be honest I don’t think he can be trusted to not massively feather his own nest at taxpayers’ expense while he remains in post, and lhe will eave loads of boobytraps for us by promoting terrible people like Peter Bone. I mean, for Christ’s sake. This too is straight from the Trump
playbook.

And the new cabinet he’s surrounding himself his bloody cabinet and we are stuck with them until October . WHY? He needs to actually leave now. I don’t understand why Johnson gets to decide when he leaves. I don’t know why the Tories haven’t done the right thing and refused to work for or with him until he leaves.

He’s a toxic, lying, law breaking, chaotic dangerous waste of space, (just like his colleagues said a couple of days ago).

It’s infuriating how the Tory party don’t care because they are prioritising themselves and how they look and their convenience over the good of the country, as always.

The only position with ANY integrity is the Labour Party calling the vote of confidence next week, and nobody in the media seems to be talking about that, just about who’s the millionth Tory to put their hat in the ring in the last five minutes.

It’s a massive fucking deal the damage that johnson has done to the country with his terrible decisions and to Parliamentary politics and trust and it’s baffling me why this seems to be being treated like any other leadership election. he needs to be got out immediately. We should have a GE.

Do you mind if I hashtag that slogan on Twitter?! You never know it might trend, I've got nearly 3K followers. Grin

Not at all! I’m surprised no one has come up with it before, seeing as 3 word slogans are so popular over the last couple of years Grin
I’m not on Twitter, it annoys me.

We deserve better
Build back better
A country for all, not the few

Short slogans work on people.

The Times says: www.thetimes.co.uk/article/boris-johnson-news-resign-prime-minister-live-2nf28bptx

‘Labour will call a vote of confidence in the government next week if Boris Johnson is not removed as prime minister.

Angela Rayner, the deputy leader of Labour, said Johnson needed to leave Downing Street immediately, and called on Conservatives to “get their act together”.

“He’s got no confidence of his own party, he’s a proven liar who is engulfed in sleaze, and we can’t have another couple of months of this. So we do have to get rid of him, and if they don’t we will call a no confidence vote,” she told Today on BBC Radio 4.’

Thank god. She’s 100% right on this.

Notonthestairs · 09/07/2022 09:57

Veering away from sensible discussions this is from the Times (with a nod to the fact that the Times clearly have a very pally relationship with the Johnsons) -

"In a sign of the coming smears that many fear will dominate the campaign, rival teams are said to be drawing up dossiers on their opponents, and quietly reminding MPs about the skeletons and gossip surrounding some of the candidates. There is unsubstantiated talk of secret affairs, further lockdown breaches and dubious business links that could come out if the “wrong” candidate is chosen."

One Cabinet minister who has publicly backed Johnson describes him as a "cosmic cunt"
One MP - "If she (Dorries) runs I’ll have to back her or she’ll kill me,” one Tory MP said.
Baker was always going to throw in his lot with Braverman - they are both ex leaders of the ERG. I suppose Baker will be hoping to get on the 1922 executive committee now.
Article concludes that Johnson won't be able or wish to stay out of the limelight - and may decide to run again at a later date...

@DowningStreetParty agree absolutely. We’ve got to endure another three months of the festering remains of the Johnson government, in a cabinet made up by Johnson, formed after the point he said he’s leaving. The country deserves better, we need better in these unprecedented times, and all we have now is a backstabbing pantomime charade for the whole summer while we all just sit tight and wait for them to make up their minds. It’s bullshit and Johnson should already be gone, for both the good of his party, and the country.

But we know those things don’t matter to him.

DowningStreetParty · 09/07/2022 10:02

That’s depressing though- like there’s a race for who can be the most extremely right wing. We need stable centrism. Tory populist extremism is what has got them and us into this mess and it’s inherently unstable.

DowningStreet - Conservatives keep peddling the "well May and Cameron stayed in Number 10 whilst a successor was chosen" line.

Deliberately overlooking that May was kicked out for policy reasons not trust/honesty issues and Cameron resigned because of a change in the party's direction and therefore could be left at the helm temporarily.

DowningStreetParty · 09/07/2022 10:04

Another victim of Chris Pincher has waived his anonymity today to say he was officially hushed up on this by the Tory Party. This kind of thing is abhorrent.

I'm not interested in "charisma". Honesty and integrity is what is needed now. Prove to the country that politics doesn't have to centre on pitting people against each other. I don't suppose that sells newspapers however.

I understand members tend to be much more right wing than the MPs so the chosen candidate is likely to be out of step with anyone who prefers a more moderate One Nation style.

The Tory members are normally to the right of their MPs, but the current batch of MPs are much more right wing than normal because so many of the centrists were purged over Brexit.

Notonthestairs · 09/07/2022 10:06

"We need stable centrism."

Absolutely 100% agree. But the Conservative membership don't.

We have so little influence at this stage, it is disheartening.

Daniel Cook was on Ch4 News the other evening. 2006 the alleged offences against him were committed! He had to deal with it himself by being very assertive when Pincher allegedly cornered him in his own (Cook’s) house.
*the use of ‘allegedly’isnot intended to cast any doubt on Cook’s recount of events.

Thank god. She’s 100% right on this.

I've been more and more impressed with Rayner these few weeks.

Labour could have a female leader of its own soon if she keeps this up and proves to be as good as she seems to be

Another chucking my hat into the ring - where statements like this are concerned.

I also agree 100%

DowningStreetParty · 09/07/2022 10:10

Sorry I was cross posting and missing people’s posts.

Lonelycrab and NotOntheStairs I totally agree. This is unprecedented situation and it’s really awful. Why is Johnson even leaving if he’s also capable of continuing for whatever his choice of time is into the future? I can’t handle the doublethink.
I’m very worried he’ll find a way not to leave at all. He should have been properly gone, out of PM office completely, this midweek.

This reminds me of this -

“Parish shouldn’t have resigned,” one MP said. “He should have just gone away with his wife for a few weeks and then come back to the job. I don’t know why the girls had to speak out like that.” Another said the witnesses were “like a turd in the swimming pool” after the defeat

twitter.com/willstewartnews/status/1540632910281285633?s=21&t=blDzGyrRs7tdxLrA05vxyQ

It's the same shut up, put up message.

Lonelycrab · 09/07/2022 10:19

I’m very worried he’ll find a way not to leave at all.

Yes I think that’s the plan too. Let things “blow over”, wait for global events to take over the headlines and make out that it’s in our interests to let him stay as he personally has the mandate from the public or something like that. Pure Trump, imo.

Maybe has the potential to backfire though, if the infighting and divisions get stronger and it descends into even more shambles? Idk.

cakeorwine · 09/07/2022 10:21

I am sure the monarchy might have something to say if he doesn't go.
Or there would be a VONC in the 1922 commitee

Notonthestairs · 09/07/2022 10:21

Random question - but do Leadership contenders have financial backing from Tory donors and do we get to see the accounts?

There will be costs to running a campaign. So who pays for it?

ancientgran · 09/07/2022 13:00

Ben Walllace not running for the leadership according to The Guardian. Can't keep up with who is and who isn't and who might be.
