MIL tattooed DS's name...

... We have just had a baby, 2 weeks ago, MIL immediately tattooed baby boys name on her arm.

However, we have since had a change of heart re the name... What a nightmare!

We didnt ask her to, or knew she was doing it, it's obviously really sweet of her to do it so that's not the problem it's more just now we dont want to call him that.

I feel awful! How on earth do we handle this? I'm really trying to talk myself into keeping the name, but it doesnt sit right...

Obviously she was daft to get a tattoo done so quickly, but how did it take you until after telling people to discover that it "doesn't work" & "sounds like a body part"?

Carlycat · 29/06/2022 15:44

This is hilarious 😂 Oh to be a fly on the wall when you break the news to her!
Getting kids names tattooed is so CRINGE 🤦‍♀️

ThreeRingCircus · 29/06/2022 15:46

Another one struggling to think what the name could be.

If you are dead set on changing his name then I would do as PPs suggest and make tattoo name his middle name. And get your DH to tell her, it's his mum!

Don't keep the name if you don't want to.

Your DH will have to tell his mother that she acted in haste, so she can repent at her leisure 😆

LaPufalina · 29/06/2022 15:49

Remembering the Daily Mail story years ago about a young boy called Drew Peacock Confused

HarryStottel · 29/06/2022 15:50

I think it's perfectly acceptable to have ' I love Willy' tattooed on your wrist.....even if it is no longer your sons name.

MargotChateau · 29/06/2022 15:52

What an odd thing to do without discussing it with the parents of said child. Also so grim. Surely generations of grannies have survived without the need to tattoo their grandchild’s name on their bodies to prove their love and dedication. My granny made me homemade lemonade and played happy families card game with me. That was sufficient to show her love for me.

MargotChateau · 29/06/2022 15:53

Also do change the name, I changed my name it suits me and I much prefer it. If your dd has picked up it sounds rude so will every bloody kid at school. Your kid will thank you later. Mil has to suck it for being both tacky and strange.

SnowyLamb · 29/06/2022 15:53

Someone I know has all his sisters' names tattooed on his arm. Now that is weird....isn't it?

Yodaisawally · 29/06/2022 15:55

What an idiot, her not you. Change the name, it's her problem to sort.

Very weird and creepy.

CoconutQueen · 29/06/2022 15:58

No of course you don't have to keep the name in any shape or form!!

Don't be weak and give your baby a name you don't want or like - the name is for his entire life and your MIL is a total idiot!!

girlmom21 · 29/06/2022 15:58

What's the name? I can't think of a name that is too close to a body part to use but that's acceptable to get tattooed on your wrist

Spanielsarepainless · 29/06/2022 15:59

And the MN favourite term of abuse, Bill End...

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 29/06/2022 16:00

Why are you having to handle it? Get DH to sort it out. Not your fault if your MIL has a screw loose...

Midlifemusings · 29/06/2022 16:01

You change the name, she figures out the tattoo, and you laugh about it for years to come.

SpookyButTrue · 29/06/2022 16:01

If the name is Winona, it's easily sorted.

roarfeckingroarr · 29/06/2022 16:04

Marking because this is hilarious

ELM8 · 29/06/2022 16:06

Had you registered it yet? If not then not your problem.. if so I'd maybe say offer to go halves on getting it removed?

Kind of her fault for being so speedy

TarpaulinEyes · 29/06/2022 16:07

More fool your MIL

HannahSternDefoe · 29/06/2022 16:07

My NDN has her kids names on her arms...she also has in bigger font the name of the (18mo) dog she got rid of when she had her 3rd child 🤔🤦‍♀️

Just change the name and let DH do the explaining after you've changed it, or she'll try to talk him out of it

notanothertakeaway · 29/06/2022 16:12

I worked with a guy who had his wife's name tattooed on his arm, but in Cantonese, just in case the marriage didn't last and he didn't want her name on his arm for ever

Too late for your MIL, but something similar might have worked for her

WilsonMilson · 29/06/2022 16:12

That’s bloody hilarious.

Getting kids names as a tattoo is the height of cringeworthy tackiness imho, which only makes this all the funnier!

CormoranStrike · 29/06/2022 16:12

Is the name Bobby?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 29/06/2022 16:18

Oh dear! Serves her right for rushing out before you've even registered baby
Change the name, and stick to your guns.
Also I don't understand those who've suggested you pay for her mistake!
