Bit of woo going on at holiday home

Nc'd for this as it's outing.

We arrived at our holiday home in France late on Thursday night to find that it's a (stunning) very old cottage, I would guess 300-400 years at least.

First thing that happened was that my husband plugged his phone in before going to bed and left it on the bedside table. Woke up the next morning to find the phone still there but the charger unplugged and on the floor in the middle of the bedroom a few feet away. Also, during the night, I could hear kids talking, but when I got up to check they were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking coming from somewhere in the house as I stood there.

Similar thing the next night, I could hear my daughter's distinct voice, except when my husband went to check the kids were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking. The house is very rural and isolated so not from outside, and everything else was switched off.

The morning after this, we were up at 6am to travel somewhere and as I stood in the kitchen brushing my daughter's hair, the electric oven knob turned itself to the autocook setting and began heating up. Bothyself and my daughter were watching it as it happened.

After that, we were away overnight and only returned last night. Today, I opened the fridge and a pack of cheese slices came flying off a perfectly level shelf and past my head.

There have been other corner of the eye things and random stuff moving (that may or may not be down to the kids, of course). I'm not frightened, it's more of a loaded atmosphere than outright sinister. But blimey, we've only been here 2 full days so far so it's a bit much!!

Anyway, tell me yours so that I can feel a bit better about mine 🙂 We're not headed home til Thursday so have a bit to go yet!

Oooh loving this.

Nothing to add, here for the stories!

Have you tried talking to it/them?

SausageAndCash · 27/06/2022 00:14

You bought cheese slices in France?

NewBootsAndRanty · 27/06/2022 00:16

Ooh! Get filming everything and share it here!

Infinitemoon · 27/06/2022 00:17

.

RagzRebooted · 27/06/2022 00:17

Oh wow, that's a lot, especially the cooker knob (actually potentially dangerous). Are you not scared? I'd be tempted to do some cleansing and ask it to stop!

You bought cheese slices in France?

Indeed, that was just the fridge protesting

Oh fabulous, a Woo thread in the middle of summer!🍿Have any of your possessions disappeared yet? I'm going through a spate of that. Will add more when I'm more awake. Just shamelessly placemarking for now.

We stated in a remote, very old gite in France one year. Bedrooms in an attic and in the middle of the night were woken by a manic type of laugh. It was so scary and lasted seconds but I was too frightened to stay in the room after that and we left two days early and booked another place. Could have been an animal of some sort I suppose but the gore was was so creepy and too isolated for me.

I did think this myself, but in my defense, I was rushing through the supermarket and just picked up what I knew the kids would eat!

I did say to DH earlier that much of the activity has been centred around electrical items, so maybe the ghost of whatever it is doesn't like modern convenience?

The cooker thing is dangerous yes, and i pondered a lot since then what would have happened if we hadn't been there to switch it off.

To answer someone's question about reviews, I booked through a French gite rental site so not the standard air BnB or whatever, but all of the reviews were great. To be fair, it's a fab house, and like I said, the atmosphere isn't scary as such, just a bit weird.

DH reckons it's the age of the house and the land, given the history of both world wars etc. I've lived in a very old house myself in the past years ago so am somewhat used to (and maybe desensitized?) from quirks like this. It does seem fairly prolific here though!

A holiday one from me was also in France. Years ago we stayed in a hotel in Boulogne. In the room my DP and I were in the double bed, him to my left. At the bottom of the bed on my partners side was a travel cot with DD2 who must have been 6 months old. To the right of me was a camp type bed with my DD1 who was abut 2 years old.

During the night I heard DD1 footsteps walk from her bed to the travel cot. In the dark could make out she was standing at the cot looking at DD2. I called out to her to come back to bed and leave DD2 alone to sleep. She ignored me. I searched for my phone and turned the touch on ready to get out of bed and go over to her, only to notice DD1 was still in her camp bed fast asleep. I looked over to the cot and the little child had disappeared.

I couldn't sleep for the rest of the night. It was our last day so I didn't have to stay there again.

SisterRuth · 27/06/2022 00:35

Is it South West France? I stayed in a genuinely frightening place near Carcassonne some years ago.

MushyWoo · 27/06/2022 00:36

I would love to film but am too busy having a nice holiday 😁 I will review all footage and photos taken closely for anything untoward when I get home though.

No interest in cleansing as it's not my house, and deffo not my place to try and cleanse something that's been here a lot longer than me.

Interesting about the missing possessions, I have a pair of sliders that vanished today but I put it down to one of the kids. Will keep you updated on whether they reappear or not.

Yikes, that would creep me out!

We haven't made a big deal out of it or told the kids about anything they haven't directly witnessed, but my eldest kid is fairly spooked and he keeps saying he has heard tapping or seen something out the corner of his eye, and he is normally absolutely unflappable.

Not near Carcassonne, we are in the Loire valley so closer to the north.

If it’s focused on electrical items and it’s an old place could be micro surges,

the noise from the kids could be a lot of houses I know of in the basque area of France /Spain have the ducted floor heating/cooling and if they are old types they tend to rattle and echo a lot
