Bit of woo going on at holiday home

Nc'd for this as it's outing.

We arrived at our holiday home in France late on Thursday night to find that it's a (stunning) very old cottage, I would guess 300-400 years at least.

First thing that happened was that my husband plugged his phone in before going to bed and left it on the bedside table. Woke up the next morning to find the phone still there but the charger unplugged and on the floor in the middle of the bedroom a few feet away. Also, during the night, I could hear kids talking, but when I got up to check they were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking coming from somewhere in the house as I stood there.

Similar thing the next night, I could hear my daughter's distinct voice, except when my husband went to check the kids were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking. The house is very rural and isolated so not from outside, and everything else was switched off.

The morning after this, we were up at 6am to travel somewhere and as I stood in the kitchen brushing my daughter's hair, the electric oven knob turned itself to the autocook setting and began heating up. Bothyself and my daughter were watching it as it happened.

After that, we were away overnight and only returned last night. Today, I opened the fridge and a pack of cheese slices came flying off a perfectly level shelf and past my head.

There have been other corner of the eye things and random stuff moving (that may or may not be down to the kids, of course). I'm not frightened, it's more of a loaded atmosphere than outright sinister. But blimey, we've only been here 2 full days so far so it's a bit much!!

Anyway, tell me yours so that I can feel a bit better about mine 🙂 We're not headed home til Thursday so have a bit to go yet!

For all the cheese slice allies: it was a joke. But I apologise for the harm caused and will do better.

WildFlowerBees · 27/06/2022 10:01

Why are cheese slices so offensive? we aren't talking your American plastic ones. Perhaps if they had been individually wrapped Camembert op offence wouldn't have been taken. Speaking to it in English might antagonise it further 🤣

SausageAndCash · 27/06/2022 10:02

Impressive picture of fridge OP.

Now all we need is the obligatory diagram of the cheese slice trajectory.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 27/06/2022 10:05

Ooh scary flying cheese. Smile

Happened to some friends of ours. They hired a cottage in Brittany one year. It was quite an old property. The mum didn't like the atmosphere inside but didn't say much to anyone however they ended up spending all day out of it to stay away.

Anyway it all culminated one night. Each night they had heard dragging and tapping/banging sounds and footsteps in the landing outside the bedrooms. Upon checking nothing there etc. After three nights they somehow ended up with all 4 of them sleeping in the one room. They couldn't get to sleep due to the noises along the corridor and when the DH finally opened the door they saw the floor half wet as if it was being mopped clean. (Helpful ghost 👻). She said you could see the wetness moving along the floor like it would if you were moving a mop across it. They slammed the door shut and packed up at first light and left the cottage 4 days early.

I think more stuff happened probably but that was the final straw. She doesn't like to talk about it all!

Please tell me you’ve packed up your stuff and plan on leaving today? Whatever ‘it’ is will do you and your family no good.

I agree. You must be crazy to be staying there with that bad juju going on.

MushyWoo · 27/06/2022 10:06

Thanks for the sample woo French phrases 😁

I've not heard of the Uncanny podcast but I do listen to Unexplained. Will deffo give Uncanny a listen.

Won't be packing up and leaving as whatever is going on doesn't seem too sinister. Plus we've paid a lot of money and are enjoying our holiday. We're out and about today so I doubt I'll have anything more to report for now.

Uncanny is brilliant!

Bloody hell Ken!

To those of you talking about orbs. Would you say this is one? I just thought it was pretty and a spooky light/reflective coincidence. Taken in Ireland last summer.

orbs are just reflections of dust particles or as in your picture glare from the sun

Indeed, that was just the fridge protesting

PMSL at this!!

ghoststoriesareforchildren · 27/06/2022 10:14

Yeah, right.

Maireas · 27/06/2022 10:17

Out for the day with the cooker switching on and stuff being randomly thrown?
Have a nice relaxing day! 😁

MushyWoo · 27/06/2022 09:58

Photos of the offending (and seemingly offensive) cheese slices.

No pictures of the strange activity?

Maireas · 27/06/2022 10:23

doesn't seem too sinister - OP?
Why post sinister goings-on then, if that's the case?
It's obviously not really a concern then.
Enjoy your holiday!

Pifflewiffle · 27/06/2022 10:24

Unless anything else happens I think flying cheese slices and a phone in a different place might not make it onto Uncanny. It would be a very short story.

Whatwouldyoudo41 · 27/06/2022 10:24

We live in a 200 year old house, when we moved in there was a smell of BO which would appear in random places at random times, we ended up nicknaming the smell ‘smelly ghost’. In the end I got fed up with it and said “smelly ghost, will you please have a wash because you smell” and the smell disappeared. So maybe you need to tell your ‘presence’ to bugger off and let you enjoy your holiday, but in French.
Not sure what bugger off is in French though?

Rosehugger · 27/06/2022 10:25

Why post sinister goings-on then, if that's the case?

Because lots of people are interested? But if you aren't then toddle off, there are plenty of other threads.

No. You misundertand.
I'm quite fascinated. It does seem at least peculiar, and certainly sinister.
The OP? All fine, enjoying the holiday, off out nothing sinister seems contradictory, right?
I'm toddling nowhere. Sending good vibes 🌹

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/06/2022 10:38

I didn't even know you could get cheese slices in France, but I see they're an English import so it makes sense now Grin
Really, though, I'm just posting for the great stories ...

BruceAndNosh · 27/06/2022 07:55

Did you rent it through Scarebnb or Spooking.com?

Boom tish brilliant 😂

You'll get told off! 🙄

MummyJasmin · 27/06/2022 10:41

I'd be so scared!

MrsWooster · 27/06/2022 10:55

I’m fascinated-we have a holiday home between Carcassonne and the Pyrenees and we practically live on sliced cheese (emmenthal /Edam) and ham baguette picnics whilst there so it’s only a matter of time until one of us is guillotiné by a flying dairy tranche.
That’ll add a certain something to this summer holiday.

GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour · 27/06/2022 10:57

I'm with PPs, you need to speak to them.
I have someone in my house, they move stuff about. It happened a lot with keys when we first moved in and sometimes we got locked in but loads of other stuff like shoes, bags, jewellery, ID, food, everything really got moved about and turned up in weird places.
I had a wee chat into thin air and it seems we have agreed they can borrow my earrings because that's all that gets moved about now.
There was a fairly well known historical murder outside our front door (didn't know when I moved in) and if it is the lady who was killed she's very welcome in our house and to my earrings if it brings her any comfort after what she went through.

You might've had me until this. The french don't really do cheese slices 😂

Yeah we do. They’re for sandwiches, croques-monsieur, cheeseburgers… there are always cheese slices in my fridge.
