Bit of woo going on at holiday home

Nc'd for this as it's outing.

We arrived at our holiday home in France late on Thursday night to find that it's a (stunning) very old cottage, I would guess 300-400 years at least.

First thing that happened was that my husband plugged his phone in before going to bed and left it on the bedside table. Woke up the next morning to find the phone still there but the charger unplugged and on the floor in the middle of the bedroom a few feet away. Also, during the night, I could hear kids talking, but when I got up to check they were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking coming from somewhere in the house as I stood there.

Similar thing the next night, I could hear my daughter's distinct voice, except when my husband went to check the kids were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking. The house is very rural and isolated so not from outside, and everything else was switched off.

The morning after this, we were up at 6am to travel somewhere and as I stood in the kitchen brushing my daughter's hair, the electric oven knob turned itself to the autocook setting and began heating up. Bothyself and my daughter were watching it as it happened.

After that, we were away overnight and only returned last night. Today, I opened the fridge and a pack of cheese slices came flying off a perfectly level shelf and past my head.

There have been other corner of the eye things and random stuff moving (that may or may not be down to the kids, of course). I'm not frightened, it's more of a loaded atmosphere than outright sinister. But blimey, we've only been here 2 full days so far so it's a bit much!!

Anyway, tell me yours so that I can feel a bit better about mine 🙂 We're not headed home til Thursday so have a bit to go yet!

Could you make out what language the child you thought was your dd was speaking?
I’m very intrigued. Keep us posted OP!

sacré bleu!

ou, peut-être, fromage bleu?

GetThatHelmetOn · 27/06/2022 07:29

Flying cheese… only in France! (No, really… I’m just placemarking)

murmuration · 27/06/2022 07:34

Did you have other things in the fridge, OP? Stuff often comes flying out of my fridge and cabinets, but it's because I've managed to balance things unstably, and they fall out. It can often in fact have a starting horizontal-ish trajectory depending on how it was originally placed.

I've also stayed in a spooky french house near narbonne years ago! Felt like someone was watching me all day and night kept asking it to go away leave me alone. All out photos had huge orbs in them. Left 3 days early!
Bloody thing attached it's self to me and I brought it home 😱

Loving the food snob ghost

MushyWoo · 27/06/2022 07:54

Someone asked about the timeline, we are here for 8 days in total because of how the flight prices were, and also because we had so much planned during the week that we needed the extra day to account for travelling.

I'm a bit worried about the snobby fridge now because there is also a bottle of alcohol free wine in there, which I'm sure is another huge French faux-pas, and I definitely wouldn't like that coming out the fridge at me 🙈

I'm fascinated with everyone else's stories, especially the one with the figure leaning on the elbows looking out the window for the noise. I can semi-ignore things moving around etc but not sure I could get over seeing an actual figure like that 😱

Omg I am crying at the fridge rejecting the cheese slices 😂

Try doing a steak well-done on the cooker and see what happens. Maybe the knob will switch itself off?

Lol

BruceAndNosh · 27/06/2022 07:55

Did you rent it through Scarebnb or Spooking.com?

BeBraveAndBeKind · 27/06/2022 07:55

We stayed at a cottage in South West Ireland. There were three bedroomed, two doubles and a twin. I have two boys and thought they'd want a room each but, when they were looking around, they both decided on the twin.

To get to the shower, you had to go through the unused bedroom and it had a very weird, oppressive atmosphere which was very unwelcoming. I ran through the room each morning to the shower and we kept the bedroom door shut at all other times.

DH tried to talk about it on the last evening there but it really felt like something unpleasant was listening. We didn't talk about it properly until we were safely in the car driving home. It was a beautiful house but I'd never stay there again.

Nope, just sounded like my dds voice chattering away in the distance. The house is quite large and echoing so it just sounded like her voice being carried across the house.

The kids have been playing musical beds a bit and 2 have been sleeping in the one bed downstairs (where there are 2 bedrooms), but last night they all decided to sleep upstairs instead in the huge bedroom adjoining myself and dh's room. Interestingly didn't hear any weird sounds in the night.

Can you share pictures with the orbs?

I once stayed in an old house in rural Brittany that creeped me out.

DH is a prolific snorer (especially after a few drinks) so one night I left the main bedroom to take myself off to the spare room in the middle of the night.

I got into bed to try and sleep and I immediately felt uneasy, like I was being watched the whole time. I can't explain it but the room had such a horrible vibe I only lasted a few minutes before I scarpered back to the main bedroom.

DH also commented on how uncomfortable and creeped out he felt in that room - the door remained firmly shut for the rest of the holiday and the rest of the house was great but that room still makes me feel uncomfortable just thinking about it!

Flying cheese doesn't sound grate

I think you should email the Uncanny BBC podcast!

Also think the house needs rewiring.

I was going to suggest this too! Tweet it to Danny Robins!

Sounds like dodgy electrics.....

I’ve been waiting for this one. How do dodgy electrics cause things to fly around?

You might've had me until this. The french don't really do cheese slices 😂

itsgettingweird · 27/06/2022 08:41

That made me chill reading that. But yes you have some force around which isn't unusual for such an old building.

Mind you ,y flat was new build when I moved in. Only person to live here.

Once I couldn't find my hairbrush anywhere and after a few days and despairing out loud how the feck could it disappear it suddenly turned up smack bang in the middle of my hallway 🤷‍♀️🤣

As a scary storyline, I’m not convinced.

I do want to hear more about @onmywaytooblivion !! What happened next?

My friend was once told she had some malevolent spirits attached to her. She’s always dreadfully ill and really doesn’t have much luck.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 27/06/2022 08:58

Slightly off the point but cheese slices definitely a thing in France. We had a French au pair who was baffled by the concept of making sandwiches without them. See also bagged grated.
