Bit of woo going on at holiday home

Nc'd for this as it's outing.

We arrived at our holiday home in France late on Thursday night to find that it's a (stunning) very old cottage, I would guess 300-400 years at least.

First thing that happened was that my husband plugged his phone in before going to bed and left it on the bedside table. Woke up the next morning to find the phone still there but the charger unplugged and on the floor in the middle of the bedroom a few feet away. Also, during the night, I could hear kids talking, but when I got up to check they were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking coming from somewhere in the house as I stood there.

Similar thing the next night, I could hear my daughter's distinct voice, except when my husband went to check the kids were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking. The house is very rural and isolated so not from outside, and everything else was switched off.

The morning after this, we were up at 6am to travel somewhere and as I stood in the kitchen brushing my daughter's hair, the electric oven knob turned itself to the autocook setting and began heating up. Bothyself and my daughter were watching it as it happened.

After that, we were away overnight and only returned last night. Today, I opened the fridge and a pack of cheese slices came flying off a perfectly level shelf and past my head.

There have been other corner of the eye things and random stuff moving (that may or may not be down to the kids, of course). I'm not frightened, it's more of a loaded atmosphere than outright sinister. But blimey, we've only been here 2 full days so far so it's a bit much!!

Anyway, tell me yours so that I can feel a bit better about mine 🙂 We're not headed home til Thursday so have a bit to go yet!

We stayed in a three storey property on the Isle of Man, but didn’t use the top floor. My husband heard someone moving about upstairs every night but did not mention it till we got home! (I mean, it could have been floorboards so I was sceptical)

However, the next year we went to a cottage in Somerset. I woke up on the penultimate night to see a shadowy figure moving about the room, was too scared to do anything but watch it glide out the room. When I looked in the Visitors Book, several previous guests had alluded to it. They’d experienced it as a benign presence.

When my DiL was a young teenager she and her family stayed in a rambly old cottage for a holiday. They kept hearing noises upstairs but when she mentioned to her parents they dismissed it. At the end of the holiday they packed up and got into the car. As they were about to pull away, DiL looked up at the house and saw a child’s face pressed against the upstairs window

Oooh this is spooking me out!
I think I would leave, the electric stuff is weird.
I always buy cheese slices in France. And peanut butter flavour puff crisps.

You bought cheese slices in France?

😂🤣

Oh wow, I wonder if this is the same cottage my family and I stayed in around 20 years ago! It was horrendous; we stayed for 3 nights then left! We kept hearing footsteps across the landing and all ended up sleeping together for the 3 nights and then my parents were too spooked so we left. Never went back to France ha ha.

we've stayed in a few French farmhouses/gites and a couple of them have been accessible from the owners main house, which we hated. We stayed in a cottage in Normandy years ago and there was a thick curtain covering a corridor which led directly into the owners living space. A large arm chair had been pushed up
against the curtain,
possibly in the hope that we didn't look behind said curtain and realise we were basically living in an annexe rather than a separate cottage! We heard some strange noises whilst we were there but when we realised the curtain was there,
figured it was the lack or any wall between us and the owners!

I’d speak to the woo. Say that you’re loving the house, and here on holiday, and they’re scaring the children so to please be nice

You might've had me until this. The french don't really do cheese slices 😂

Nope. I explained upthread the French definitely eat sliced cheese. And grated cheese. Both are way more popular than in the U.K. and available for decades. Grated emmental has been around for over 30 years, probably longer but I didn’t come across it until then.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/06/2022 09:22

Oh and you know, the light painted furniture from Laura Ashley and similar that we consider French. The French consider it British, more often English.

WildFlowerBees · 27/06/2022 09:28

I'd also be inclined to speak to the woo, use Google translate if you don't speak French 😬

To those of you talking about orbs. Would you say this is one? I just thought it was pretty and a spooky light/reflective coincidence. Taken in Ireland last summer.

No, orbs are round. That just looks like a reflection or something.

I think its just the sun on the lens. Nice photograph though.

MushyWoo · 27/06/2022 09:51

I'm pissing myself at the thought of using Google translate to speak to the woo 😂 Maybe I'll wait til the last day to do that.

Cheese slices don't have to be processed cheese, they can just be regular cheese sliced up. I'm probably more likely to buy that on a SC holiday (where knives may be of variable effectivess/quality) to make quick sandwiches, and also in France as they have a nice variety of sliced cheese!

Though I quite like a Kraft cheese slice myself.

Rosehugger · 27/06/2022 09:54

Ne pas lancez la fromage, SVP!

zebette · 27/06/2022 09:54

Ne touchez pas la cuisinère. Ne touchez pas au bouton.

Photos of the offending (and seemingly offensive) cheese slices.

Please tell me you’ve packed up your stuff and plan on leaving today? Whatever ‘it’ is will do you and your family no good.

crosshatching · 27/06/2022 10:00

Thrilled to find so many Uncanny fans! OP can you confirm, have you been reading any Stephen King in the run up to your holiday?!

Rosehugger · 27/06/2022 10:00

Oh I like a bit of orange Irish cheddar.
