Also, where are you from?

It's French toast for me. I'm from Glasgow.

Eggy Bread. I’m from Yorkshire.

My mum wasn’t a good cook but she used to make the most gorgeous fluffy, delicious, golden eggy bread.

My mum died and I left home in the late 80’s and soon after had ‘French Toast’ in a restaurant - it was hard and flat and unevenly cooked. I was horrified. It took me a long while to work out that my mum deep fried her eggy bread.

I’m 50 and I’ve never seen anyone else do that and I’ve never made it myself, but I want to now!

To me eggy bread is just dipping it in egg and then having a savoury meal. French toast includes sugar so is sweet.

So I use both and I think they’re different things! (From the south)

This.

My Granny used to call it Gypsy Toast. Essex.
Where I live now it's Eggy Bread. Yorkshire.
I don't like it whatever it's called.

Agree though that Eggy bread is eaten as a savoury dish and you add sugar to make it French toast.

Can't bear to hear the term eggy bread. It's up there with picky bits, roasties and toms. My problem I know...

As a child, in Cheshire, it was always French Toast, as an adult in Manchester and ever since it's eggy bread. Always savoury, always exactly the same. I just thought my parents were posh/pretentious!

Another one for Gypsy toast! (Hampshire). When you cut a circle out of fried bread and add an egg, that's called The Old Man and his Hat!

We call that an Eagle's Eye, lucysnowe2. Grin
