Also, where are you from?

Eggy bread (southwest here) and always savoury.

ENoeuf · 04/06/2022 15:06

Two separate things, so both.

KittenKong · 04/06/2022 15:07

Mum called it gypsum toast (from Newcastle)

newtb · 04/06/2022 15:07

French toast used to be another name for melba toast. Bread, toasted both sides, split horizontally and the untoasted bit lightly toasted. Served with pâté.
Eggy bread was a staple of Guide Camp, bread dipped in beaten egg and fried.

The sugar beaten egg etc was a US import.

From Wirral

Eggy toast!

BarryKentPoet · 04/06/2022 15:08

I call it eggy bread when it is savoury and French Toast when it is sweet.

UrsulaPandress · 04/06/2022 15:10

Eggy Bread. Oldham. Savoury.

Poor Knights. Then if I put jam and whipped cream on it it becomes Rich Knights.

Ah, this is the other name I was trying to think of, it’s lovely.

From the SW, would call it French Toast if savoury or sweet. Eggy bread just makes me think of manky toddlers.

DiDonk · 04/06/2022 15:12

Called egg dips to me - from north east.

Sweet version is called pain perdue in France, not le French toast!

ChessieFL · 04/06/2022 15:13

Agree with pp that they’re different things. Eggy bread is savoury, French toast is sweet.

Theimpossiblegirl · 04/06/2022 15:13

Eggy bread if savoury, French toast if sweet.

Nap1983 · 04/06/2022 15:13

French toast always… eggy bread sounds horrific lol even though it’s the same thing

SmiledWtherisingsun · 04/06/2022 15:15

French toast is eggy bread with sugar & cinnamon melted on top.

Eggy bread - dip a slice of bread in beaten egg and fry. Serve with ketchup.

French toast - use brioche, add milk & cinnamon to the egg before dipping and frying. Serve with a dusting of icing sugar, maple syrup and fruit.

This!!

Eggy bread and French toast are two entirely different things.

countrylifer · 04/06/2022 15:15

Eggy bread - best served standing in for the bread in a bacon sandwich

Gypsy toast for me

This is what my grandad used to call it, he was from Glasgow.

SgurrNaCìche · 04/06/2022 15:18

Eggy bread - bread dipped in egg and fried.
Yorkshire

SenecaFallsRedux · 04/06/2022 15:18

French toast. I'm from the US, and it's always sweet.

ILoveToads · 04/06/2022 15:19

Eggy bread, from the midlands.

I ordered French toast in the US thinking it was the same as eggy bread and it turned up covered in syrup and icing sugar Angry

EBearhug · 04/06/2022 15:22

Eggs bread is savoury. French toast is sweet with cinnamon and sugar. Anything with cinnamon is Wrong.

I used to think it was called Poor Nights because I only ever heard it rather than saw it written down, and thought it was food for nights when you're poor.

Pattygonia · 04/06/2022 15:23

Poor Knights here too - but it was "Poor Knights of Windsor" for some reason. Sweet or savoury

Have also heard the french name, Pain perdu - as it's made with stale bread that would otherwise be "lost" or thrown out

Born and raised in Glasgow and French Toast for me. My English OH thinks I'm putting on airs and graces though.

DiscoYear2000 · 04/06/2022 15:24

French Toast - never had sweet version, only savoury. I’m from the south east.
