Also, where are you from?

It's French toast for me. I'm from Glasgow.

Always knew it as French toast and it was always savoury.

Areyoiboredyet · 04/06/2022 15:58

French toast with cheese melted on top and tomato sauce yum

AdaColeman · 04/06/2022 15:58

It's pain perdu here, served as a breakfast treat on high days and holidays.

stressedtiredandsad · 04/06/2022 15:59

My family (from Durham) call it gypsy toast

Xanadu58 · 04/06/2022 16:00

When I was a child, our family always called it gypsy toast . No idea where that came from but always known as that . I'm from Suffolk.

User3568975431146 · 04/06/2022 16:10

Definitely French toast. Eggy bread just sounds ridiculous

KittenKong · 04/06/2022 16:17

So are there regional differences do a runny egg yolk and toast?

it’s a ‘dippy egg’ here.

starlingdarling · 04/06/2022 16:19

French toast for me, I'm from southwest Ireland. Not sure why people insist french toast has to be sweet. When I lived in France it could be sweet or savoury and was most often made with leftover baguette at home rather than brioche like the restaurants.

Tormundsbeard · 04/06/2022 16:24

French toast ( Scottish Mum).

Do you mean a boiled egg? Which we would call egg and soldiers.

Or a fried egg with a runny yolk? I'd call that a dippy egg.

KittenKong · 04/06/2022 16:30

Yup - soft boiled egg in an egg cup.

Itsnt a runny fried egg ‘sunny side up’ or is that when it’s flipped?

I like a runny yolk 😋

FairyLightPups · 04/06/2022 16:31

Eggy bread is how my mum says it, she's Welsh. DW says french toast. We both grew up in Glasgow.

hugoagogo · 04/06/2022 16:33

Eggy toast with ketchup or marmite.
I have never had the sweet version, it really doesn't appeal.

Areyoiboredyet · 04/06/2022 16:34

Oops forgot to add I'm from Midlothian in Scotland

boatahoy · 04/06/2022 16:41

I think a fried egg with a runny yolk is sunny side up. But we never called it that. Just fried eggs with a dippy yolk, or dippy eggs.

DS just calls them "flat eggs" the yolk being runny is assumed Grin

For those who eat savoury eggy bread with ketchup… is this a meal on its own or part of an English breakfast or similar?

I say French toast but it’s always sweet and I add milk, sugar and cinnamon to the egg.

Cheap easy meal here, akin to beans on toast or similar.

Dougalneedsahaircut · 04/06/2022 16:46

French Toast also in Scotland 😊

Imissmoominmama · 04/06/2022 16:57

French toast, whether it’s savoury or sweet.

I'm Lancastrian, but have Welsh, Irish and Yorkshire… ish(?) roots.

So not sure where it comes from.

KittenKong · 04/06/2022 17:00

I don’t think I have ever had it ‘sweet’. That explains how I have seen it served up with fruit on tv!

CornishGem1975 · 04/06/2022 17:01

Overrated!

But it was always eggy bread.

chouxfleur · 04/06/2022 17:05

We have never been able to settle this debate in our house, so we decided to call it oeuf-y pain instead

Swearwolf · 04/06/2022 17:09

Lost bread over here! I always thought that was pretty normal but am now realising it probably came from my Belgian grandmother, who must have translated it literally from the French pain perdu. I can't think of it as anything else though!

stargirl1701 · 04/06/2022 17:12

Eggy bread. Perthshire.
