Also, where are you from?

It's French toast for me. I'm from Glasgow.

French toast. Can be either sweet or savoury. I’m from Central Scotland.

To me “eggy bread” sounds very childish and I cringe to hear an adult say it.

rainbowandglitter · 04/06/2022 15:25

Never heard of either!

mads2750 · 04/06/2022 15:26

I'm from the midlands but with Scottish parents - it's French toast and always just with salt. Really want some now!

lalaloopyhead · 04/06/2022 15:26

Eggy bread (east mids), I learnt to make it on Brownie pack holiday. Must be served with a liberal sprinkle of salt and tomato ketchup. I have never had French Toast but thought that was sweet version.

Eggy bread - dip a slice of bread in beaten egg and fry. Serve with ketchup.

French toast - use brioche, add milk & cinnamon to the egg before dipping and frying. Serve with a dusting of icing sugar, maple syrup and fruit.

Absolutely this. I’ve only had eggy bread once at brownie camp and it was grim. French toast was my DD’s go to brunch order when we lived in the states. But they’re totally different foods.

This is what my grandad used to call it, he was from Glasgow.

I call it eggy bread, grew up with it as gypsy toast. From Birmingham, mum and her family are too. Only other person I have met call it gypsy toast is from closer to the Black Country, but still brum area.

Seeline · 04/06/2022 15:30

I had eggy bread for breakfast for the first time at Guide camp 40 years ago. It never tastes as good without the smokey flavour of an open cooking fire.

French toast is sweet.

GrouchyKiwi · 04/06/2022 15:30

We called it French Bread in my house in NZ. Grin (I think there's a split in NZ, and it can be either bread or toast in name.) Always sweet, with cinnamon in the eggy mix. Often eaten on special occasions for breakfast.

Now that I live in the UK I call it French Toast.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 04/06/2022 15:30

Eggy bread - savoury
French toast - sweet.

Home counties.

StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon · 04/06/2022 15:31

French toast - Im from Dublin.

KittenKong · 04/06/2022 15:32

In our house it’s called ‘fry-n-d’egg’ because that’s why a ds always called it, and it stuck.

miltonj · 04/06/2022 15:38

Eggy bread IMO is savoury and best served with ketchup or brown sauce and bacon. French toast is sugary and cinnamon covered with fruit! Aw I right want eggy bread now 😩

MrsCakeBaker · 04/06/2022 15:39

Eggy bread. Not sure if that´s a southern thing, because everyone I know from elsewhere calls it French toast.

miltonj · 04/06/2022 15:39

twinkletoedelephant · 04/06/2022 14:50

Depends on who I am cooking it for

Twin 1 it's eggy bread ..

Twin 2 it's french toast ..he doesn't like eggs :)

🤣

jay55 · 04/06/2022 15:41

Eggy bread is just made with egg.

French toast is made with a custard.

Growing up we only had eggy bread, and usually just at brownie camp.

Workyticket · 04/06/2022 15:43

Gypsy Toast - I'm in the North East.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 04/06/2022 15:43

Eggy bread, and it's always savoury here with bacon.
I'm from Durham but lived near Glasgow for 20 years.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 04/06/2022 15:46

For those who eat savoury eggy bread with ketchup… is this a meal on its own or part of an English breakfast or similar?

I say French toast but it’s always sweet and I add milk, sugar and cinnamon to the egg.

girljulian · 04/06/2022 15:48

DiDonk · 04/06/2022 15:12

Called egg dips to me - from north east.

Sweet version is called pain perdue in France, not le French toast!

I was about to say "am I the only person who inexplicably calls it Dippy Egg" -- it seems I am, but your egg dips and my dippy egg are probably related! Also from the North East.

kolomo · 04/06/2022 15:49

Eggybread - NW

KohlaParasaurus · 04/06/2022 15:50

Eggy bread, because lots of places apart from France have bread dipped in egg and fried as part of their culinary repertoire. I was brought up calling it French toast in Scotland. I eat it lightly salted or as part of a fry-up, never sweet.

AlpacaTheBags · 04/06/2022 15:51

I eat it on its own. Well served with the omelette made from the last bit egg mixture. Sometimes it's the best part of French toast.

Me - French toast (not from UK originally)
DH- eggy bread. (Northerner)

Anyway- I can highly recommend french toast made using pancake batter instead of beaten egg. It makes it light, fluffy and gorgeously gorgeous with added syrups of choice.

Pixiedust1234 · 04/06/2022 15:53

They are different things. Eggy bread is savoury, French toast is sweet.

Abraxan · 04/06/2022 15:54

Eggy bread.

I'm in South Yorkshire.

Eggy bread for me is bread dipped in egg then fried.

I always think of French bread as the sweet version with sugar and cinnamon.

We don't like the sweet version in my house, me and Dh like the savoury version though and Dd will often have it with cheese, cut up sausage or bacon added to the egg mix.
