The Daily Mail headline is playing a clip of a continuous swarm of phosphorus bombs raining down on the Mariupol steelworks. Apparently after Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest. It looks just awful. Is it the end for the people trapped in there? Is this use of chemical weapons illegal and will it provoke a response from NATO?

"This was reported on Telegram by the adviser to the Mariupol Mayor, Petro Andriushchenko, Ukrinform reports.

"Yesterday, the occupiers used incendiary or phosphorus bombs against Mariupol Defenders for the first time (we will leave the conclusion to specialists). The occupiers themselves claim that 9M22C incendiary shells with thermite layers were applied. The combustion temperature is about 2,000-2,500 degrees Celsius. It is almost impossible to stop the burning," he said."

I think, unfortunately, the use of phosphorus bombs has already happened a few times.

Thanks, Igotjelly. I thought that might be the case Sad

Sorry haven't checked if this has been posted yet. It's a film compliled from video filmed by a Russian soldier who was later captured. With subtitles:

He looks so young, almost like a school boy. Do you think that little girl being given the bicycle is his daughter? He seems close to her so if not his daughter maybe his little sister or niece.

How bleak and senseless it all is. It is good he was captured rather than killed.

Looks OK here. Maybe it’s now been changed.

From about half way down this thread every post appears in bold for me. I'm using the desktop site on my ipad with Safari browser Confused

Just typing in the message box is also bold!

Well it hasn't come out bold on my computer.

Is this use of chemical weapons illegal and will it provoke a response from NATO?

I think the rules are continually up for discussion but AFAIK horrible though they are phosphorus weapons are not regarded at chemical weapons...

There use in civilian areas/in areas in close proximity to civilians is banned (again that's AFAIK) but there's a lot of wriggle room in the various treaties that allows does allow such ordnance to be used against enemy combatants (e.g. for target marking).

It looks like the government have quietly changed the law for homeless refugees. At the moment there is a 6 week limit on stays in B&Bs however this has just been changed so it can indefinite for refugees (thus giving priority to housing for the British)

blueshoes · 15/05/2022 12:47

notimagain, thanks for clarifying on phosphorus bombs and how they are not chemical weapons. It reminds me of napalm which is horrific enough to read about during the Vietnam war but the description of phosphorus bombs in your links just sounds so much more worse.

Really appreciate your expertise on this thread.

The time and date stamp on this is 1:53 AM · May 15, 2022. As in the early hours of TODAY

The Kyiv Independent AT KyivIndependent
Reuters: Large convoy of evacuees from Mariupol reaches Zaporizhzhia safely.

Petro Andriushchenko, aide to Mariupol’s mayor, earlier said the convoy contained between 500 to 1,000 cars, the largest single evacuation from the city since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/05/2022 12:54

@jgw1

This is what I see. As I said, it's only on this thread. Weird.

Yes, it looks that way. Honour to them.

No one in their right mind would read the history of Soviet-Finnish warfare and think "let's do it again."

The only way I would want invade Finland would involve a box of chocolates and some wine. Maybe on the back of a tractor.

Depending on the chocolates, you are very welcome to invade.

The Turkey response to Finland's NATO bid is even odder now because Niinistö clarified he spoke to Erdogan a month ago and Erdogan himself raised the possibility of Finland joining NATO and saying that Turkey will support that.

Going to watch that Eurovision video when there's no children about as I expect I'll be in tears.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 15/05/2022 13:00

😥 for the steel plant people.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/05/2022 13:07

Turkey saying that Finland is full of members of a terrorist organisation is strange because they seem to be talking about members of the PKK, an organisation that is already banned in the EU, and Finland is a member of the EU so presumably party to that ban.

The PKK raises money all over Europe, possibly most in Germany, so suddenly noticing it being in Sweden and Finland has got to be a point-making rather than a real objection.

That's been reported for a couple days now. This might come out snarky in typing but I really don't mean it to, Im asking in a spirit of enquiry - why do you find it curious that it's only turned up in the Kyiv Independent now?

It does seem odd of them to publish it later than anyone else, they are usually very on the ball.

Could it be that the convoy left earlier but it's taken them all this time to get there? there must have been a lot of Russian checkpoints.

Yeh I’m sure I read somewhere it had taken a while for that very reason.

The first video in the link I posted shows a slightly truncated version. A reply links to the full one with church, cemetery, destroyed Russian tank and steadfast women images.

Heart in pieces.

I need to find a quiet time to watch the video. Cannot be sobbing in the middle of the day.

Very interesting article on the relative losses, as far as they are known through visual sighting. The Ukrainians have been targetting the logistics heavily. Trent Telenko of "watch the Russian tyres!" fame will be delighted.

BREAKING:

Several Swedish sources say Sweden will apply for NATO membership simultaneously together with Finland on Tuesday.

Highly respected newspaper SvD was one of the first to report the story.

Finnish PM Sanna Marin stressed today that it’s important to do it together.

I think it's natural to assume they'd be doing this. If the Russians try anything, the wrath of the gods will descend on them ✊🏻
