@LadyOfTheCanyon a few people mine here and Reddit for clues before even starting to guess, so especially if they're later on in the day their first guess is far from random.
I think they're only cheating themselves, and the clues are to nudge people who are genuinely stuck.

A streak is the number of wins in a row.

But that's why I'm asking - I've played every day and have always found the word. So I'm not understanding why my streak is less than my wins!

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 10/05/2022 11:23

Help, I’m stuck in the long grass 😫

I’ve got 992, 985, 976, 941, 924 as my top greens. Damn this game.

992 but less tangible

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/05/2022 11:35

Biwi- your DNFs reset the streak as it doesn't sync across devices.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 10/05/2022 11:41

Ahhh, got it! Thanks. It felt like some of my greens were opposites and I couldn’t find the bridge to common ground.

@BIWI is it because you switched between phone and desktop? So your main device doesn’t “know” about your wins on those days when you used the other device, hence the broken streak? (Maybe I’ve misunderstood what you’re saying though)

I solved Semantle #101 in 89 guesses with 1 hint. My first guess had a similarity of -0.45. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #19. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 25.03 (309/1000). semantle.com/

BIWI · 10/05/2022 11:42

I switched from my phone right at the beginning. So that wouldn't explain it.

I know it doesn't really matter, in the great scheme of things Grin but I was intrigued.

How can they find that enjoyable? Confused

Anyway I've been stuck on 993 for ages!

People who routinely get the word in under 100 guesses with no hints - how do you do it? There are so many starting words that luck can only play a part so many times.

I'd hate to suggest that people were using two screens ( one for hints) and then posting "acceptable" results on here.

But then I'm just a suspicious, deviously minded individual. Grin

I wouldn’t say I routinely get it in under 100 (today is a case in point!) But often enough that my average is well under 100. I try not to use the semantle hints themselves and never more than one, because the day I got fed up and took two hints I just felt like what was the point in doing it. But I’ll happily use online thesaurus and any hints from this thread - I know it doesn’t make sense but in my head it just feels better! That’s why I don’t understand people who say they don’t want hints on this thread - I don’t really get what the thread is for if not that. But then everyone plays differently and has a different concept of what makes it worth doing I guess.

I feel a bit like that with redactle though, over on that thread people routinely get each article in under 50 never mind 100, whereas it usually takes me 100 to even begin to see what area I need to be looking.
I don’t mind it there so much though, I like filling in as muck as possible before I get the answer, I just find it mad that people know enough about enough different things to be able to guess Chopin, monosaccharides, algebraic topology, cicadas and Meryl Streep all in about 20 guesses. (To be fair I got Chopin and Meryl relatively quickly, definitely not the others).

Crap sorry! Thought I’d edited.

JaneJeffer · 10/05/2022 11:58

I think some people don't input every word as soon as it comes into their head like I do so it keeps their numbers down.

BowerOfBramble · 10/05/2022 11:59

Well swipe me with a tuning fork, that was painful. I would never ever have got that without (many) hints and can’t believe some of you got it so fast.

although I do think sometimes if you work in certain fields words may more naturally spring to mind. For example if you are a designer or a maths teacher you might get the word “area” and think “radius” or “surface” whereas people in unrelated jobs might think eg “woodland”.

I solved Semantle #101 in 196 guesses with 7 hints. My first guess had a similarity of 9.54. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #52. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 49.06 (996/1000).

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/05/2022 12:00

Redactle is a different world. I definitely consider under a 100 on good score on that. And if people say they never use Google to check a fact or the exact term for something, i think they are kidding themselves. I used an Atlas for Grenada, I know it was a Caribbean island, just had to find the right one!

AliasGrape · 10/05/2022 12:01

Sorry everyone I’ve reported my post with the pictures, I thought I’d cropped the screen grab but obviously it didn’t save like that.

JaneJeffer · 10/05/2022 12:08

Don't worry @AliasGrape I'm only annoyed you didn't have a higher green than me Grin

For me, part of the enjoyment of semantle/cemantle/redactle is the sharing and agonising on these threads! It would be very boring otherwise - just a list of our scores.

Cryptic hinting is also enjoyable Smile

I spent a lot of yesterday wondering who had spotted the massive give away on the Semantle page. It was obvious some had (the ones getting it in under 10) for example

(For those who missed it... it was Semantle 100, with Century being a word for 100 in some contexts)

InMySpareTime · 10/05/2022 12:30

I totally hadn't spotted it, and spent hundreds of guesses wondering what linked emperors, dynasty, reign, regal (but not royal), eternity, king (but not queen) etc. It took ten guesses from the Redactle starter hint to get it, only for someone to say that was too obvious Blush.

GrouchyKiwi · 10/05/2022 13:00

I've also been stuck on 993 for some time JaneJeffer.

BIWI · 10/05/2022 13:01

Do you want a hint, those of you on 993?

ApolloandDaphne · 10/05/2022 13:03

@GrouchyKiwi 993 is a pretty solid clue to the actual word.

BestIsWest · 10/05/2022 13:05

Stuck on 995 here. Also have 927 and 920.

InMySpareTime · 10/05/2022 13:07

993 reasonable synonym in "this will 993 you" context

GrouchyKiwi · 10/05/2022 13:08

Thanks, all. I'm glad it's a useful word. Now I just need to think of similar ones!
