Or am I the only numpty that didn’t realise the shops would be shut and had to make a mercy dash around various local stores to get anything for today?!

My dh was caught out. He thought Tesco would be open. I told him it wouldn’t be.

Favouritefruits · 17/04/2022 16:24

I still live in a town where everything still shuts for a half day on a Wednesday so I’m usually prepared before Christmas and Easter.

RedWingBoots · 17/04/2022 16:40

@SaxendaSummer

I think it's something to do with store sizes that determine who can/can't open

Square footage or something

280 square meters.

I was ill with Norovirus this week but I finally managed to drag my arse to the supermarket on Friday. Judging by the oncoming Zombie apocalypse type scenario I encountered there everyone knew they would be shut for one whole day. I nearly got damned well trampled.

Curlygirl06 · 17/04/2022 16:47

I work in a supermarket, and it's the same every year. Easter Sunday we're shut- so every man and his dog comes in on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and buys loads more than usual because the shop is shut for one day.

Sidisawetlettuce · 17/04/2022 16:48

@rc22

I'm so old that I remember when supermarkets and most shops were closed every Sunday.
Same here - and half day closing on a Wednesday.
gingerhills · 17/04/2022 16:49

Our supermarkets aren't closed. Waitrose might be but Co-op and tesco Metro are still open.

luciatrope · 17/04/2022 16:55

Is it different here in Scotland? Went to Morrisons and Aldi and both seemed normal.

Dolares · 17/04/2022 17:00

I'm in Scotland so shops are open as normal, but DH was working today (retail) and had one of the quietest days of his working life! So i think some people here must think the shops are closed.

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 17/04/2022 17:21

The b and q in Melton Mowbray is open.

Surgarblossom · 17/04/2022 17:22

I told my husband that the shops close on Easter Sunday, but of course he knows best so off he trots only to return 30 minutes later empty handed GrinGrin

C152 · 17/04/2022 17:28

I assumed everything would be closed today and was surprised to see Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and cafes like Nero open.

ImInStealthMode · 17/04/2022 17:29

In the Channel Islands here, big shops are allowed to open on Easter Sunday (although some UK chains don't).

That said, we've only had major Sunday trading at all for a couple of years, so it's ingrained to go to the smaller grocery shops on a Sunday anyway.

Most bizarrely it's illegal to dance on Good Friday. Places with dance floors have to rope them off, and all licensed premises have to close at 11pm Confused

schnubbins · 17/04/2022 17:35

Supermarkets/shops are closed every Sunday in germany also.Amazing that we can survive.

Supermarkets are open today in Scotland if anyone is stuck!

Abraxan · 17/04/2022 17:51

I've done in the past without thinking.
We don't really test Sunday as any t to other Sundays/bank holidays except extra chocolate. Totally forgot until we arrived.

Daisycrown · 17/04/2022 17:53

Lol yep I'm over here doing a spag bol 😂

bagsforlife20 · 17/04/2022 17:53

Train station shops and smaller stores (Tesco express etc) were open today. Along with most bars and restaurants if you wanted to get a takeaway

chubbachub · 17/04/2022 17:55

All open as normal here in Scotland
Supermarkets only closed on Christmas day here and for the last couple of years Boxing day too.

except Asda. They always seem to find a way to open!

bagsforlife20 · 17/04/2022 17:58

@Jobseeker19

This is the most boring time of the year. Worse than Christmas. I cant wait for shops to be open every day
Woah your life sounds depressing. How can you not enjoy the long weekend/bank holiday and nicer weather? Imo this is the best time of year, spring coming into summer. Do you not have friends/family to enjoy it with? Who even cares about the shops lol
Duchess379 · 17/04/2022 18:17

It's the spring version of Christmas day! 😆

SirGawain · 17/04/2022 18:50

The present law dates from 1994 and before that many shops were not allowed to open at all on Sunday's. Prior to that the rules were a shambles, so at least things are clearer now. One example of the mess pre 1994 was that If I wished I could buy a porn magazine on Sunday but not a Bible!

ukborn · 17/04/2022 18:59

Local Sainsburys is open. Not sure you could get lamb there but pretty much everything else. I think you are a numpty for leaving it to last moment and not thinking that big shops would be closed like they are every year.

That’s a really kind message, thanks so much Hmm

I didn’t “leave it until the last minute”, I just wanted to get some food on a Sunday. It’s no special occasion here.
