Or am I the only numpty that didn’t realise the shops would be shut and had to make a mercy dash around various local stores to get anything for today?!

After spending most of my life in Scotland this totally threw me when we moved to England. Everything is open as normal at home and always is at Easter as far as I am aware. So OP I get it, if you are not used to it then it will throw you

Don’t have Sunday trading either and always used to doing food shopping for the week first thing on a Sunday morning so fruit and veg is fresh for week ahead and still have rest of the day to enjoy as a family. Down here half the day is gone before the shops open so now have a recurring online delivery slot

Pyri · 17/04/2022 12:23

@Sparklingbrook

Well yes, I realise this is the solution now

And actually there's no 'trickery' involved at all Wink

Nah it’s witchcraft, I won’t hear anything otherwise

This is the most boring time of the year. Worse than Christmas.
I cant wait for shops to be open every day

Milomonster · 17/04/2022 12:41

Tesco Express car park was full when I just visited to get bread. My mother was in a panic about shops being closed today, but there are always options. I’m sure the Arab/Asian shops will be open today.

emmathedilemma · 17/04/2022 12:41

I thought the big supermarkets would be open until my mum mentioned it last night. In my defence the ones are at home are open but seemingly in England they’re closed!

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/04/2022 12:44

Easter Sunday and Christmas Day are the only days I know DH won't have to go into work. He works in a warehouse for a major food retailer (although night shift will be going in tonight).

Myonlysunshine123 · 17/04/2022 12:44

@Bonkerz
Now I've realized I've got no mint sauce!

Sparklingbrook · 17/04/2022 12:45

I have a few friends that work in food retail (England) and I know they appreciate knowing they have Easter Sunday off and can actually plan family meet ups etc...

bengalcat · 17/04/2022 12:45

Yep - never mind we’ll have roast lamb tomorrow instead

Today's literally the only day they're closed...

The weathers lovely. Go out.

I think Sunday trading rules changed relatively recently in Scotland, I certainly remember it being illegal to sell alcohol on a Sunday (though our local off-licence/video rental always rented a lot more "videos" on a Sunday).

Then it changed to being legal after 12 noon (after church) for a few years and now you can only buy alcohol 10am to 10pm any day of the week (Except in pubs).

We drove overnight from Aberdeen to Bristol a couple of years ago and enjoyed the novelty of wine with breakfast in a 'Spoons.

Letterasaurus · 17/04/2022 12:58

Bloody hell, let poor retail staff have a day off when everyone else is off too!

SaxendaSummer · 17/04/2022 13:01

I'm sat in the car park at work.....staff are in, we are resetting our store.... the amount of entitled men coming to the doors and kicking them as well as kicking random bollards in temper, is all quite amusing!!

Whole families getting out of cars trooping through the car park to a closed store...

We were out doing a bit of litter picking and the abuse we got? I brought everybody back in!

Gingernaut · 17/04/2022 13:05

Used to work in the Civil Service, retail and cleaned shops as a student.

No.

Reduced hours on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, if you're lucky, normal opening hours on Easter Saturday, closed on Easter Sunday and reduced opening on Easter Monday.

Back to normal on Tuesday.

Legoisthebest · 17/04/2022 13:05

Some retail staff who work Sundays unfortunately will still be at work today. They use Easter Sunday as a cleaning and sorting out displays day.
With some retailers if you normally work Sundays and want Easter Sunday off you usually have to request it as a annual leave day.

SaxendaSummer · 17/04/2022 13:09

It's not trickery it's just the law

KirstenBlest · 17/04/2022 13:10

I went to Ikea one yesr. It was closed. Went with a friend, whose idea it was

I don't tend to go to the supermarket on Sunday anyway as it's bust

Georgeskitchen · 17/04/2022 13:10

Smaller convenience stores can open and the pharmacies have a rota for who will open easter:: Christmas
I remember the good old days when supermarkets didn't open on sundays/bank Holidays I don't remember anyone starving through lack of shops being open 🤣

ShadowPuppets · 17/04/2022 13:11

I’m usually very on the ball but have been laid up with the double whammy of covid and conjunctivitis for two weeks - and I’m 36 weeks pregnant and just finished for maternity leave on Thursday. And we spent all yesterday viewing houses as we accepted an offer on ours on Tuesday and I’m desperate to find somewhere before bang arrives.

So yes, we are having oven pizza for tea today and no, I will not be taking any questions about this at this time Grin

KirstenBlest · 17/04/2022 13:12

busy not bust

CheeseCheeseCheeseCheese · 17/04/2022 13:15

I'm in Scotland. The supermarkets are all open.

Are you Scottish living in England, op? Your use of "numpty" and forgetting shops shut in England suggests that.

Moonface123 · 17/04/2022 13:16

This will probably be the only Sunday l have off this year, but l dont mind, l get time off in the week which l prefer.
