Or am I the only numpty that didn’t realise the shops would be shut and had to make a mercy dash around various local stores to get anything for today?!

I always thought Easter Sunday was like Christmas but DH took the kids to soft play this morning as he saw it a poster saying it was open. There are 3 craft fairs or similar type events on today in surrounding villages too.

dipdye · 17/04/2022 13:18

Trickery?!

They're just shut?

Onthegrid · 17/04/2022 13:18

I went to the shops yesterday because I knew the big supermarkets were closed today but that is no help when I forgot to buy milk!
However all is not lost as the local shop, and the garage will be open so I have somewhere to go on my walk.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 17/04/2022 13:21

Ha! I'm in Germany now where the shops are closed not only on Easter Sunday, but on Good Friday and Easter Monday as well!

Northgirl96 · 17/04/2022 13:21

I didn't forget but I felt like they're not always shut on Easter Sunday. Googling it, it appears I'm wrong and they've been shut on Easter Sunday forever and ever. I don't really get why. It's not as though we're a nation of devout Christians. Yes, it's probably nice for retail staff to be off too, but why would you be desperate for Easter Sunday off if you weren't religious? It's just a regular Sunday for the vast majority of people. For people who work retail, Sunday is the same as Monday-Friday is to people who don't work retail. It comes with the job (yes, I've done it myself!)

chisanunian · 17/04/2022 13:24

No. I knew about it, everything has always closed on Easter Sunday.

Didn't stop us from running out of carrots though!

rc22 · 17/04/2022 13:24

I'm so old that I remember when supermarkets and most shops were closed every Sunday.

YellowPlant · 17/04/2022 13:24

@Jobseeker19

This is the most boring time of the year. Worse than Christmas. I cant wait for shops to be open every day
Is your only entertainment going to the shops? Maybe take up a hobby or few.

Reminds me of a not very well-planned school coach tour of Germany over Easter - everything was shut so we spent most of the weekend wandering aimlessly around deserted streets.

Me too.

Quite nice for retail staff to have a small part of the long bank hol weekend off though.....you know, to maybe see family and friends who work mon-Fri!!

I got caught ☹️. I actually checked store opening times on the Asda website and it said 10.00am 🤷🏻‍♀️. There were a lot of people there.

On the bright side I drove back past the local garage who had some diesel, which was a relief because I was running on fumes 😃👍.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 17/04/2022 14:10

We had an Ocado delivery this morning. I was really surprised when I saw slots available but it was very useful.

Horsemad · 17/04/2022 14:14

I think it came into force years ago when Sunday opening started in England that the larger sized shops had to close on Xmas Day & Easter Sunday.

Manekinek0 · 17/04/2022 14:42

I was caught out on Friday. I am sure shops have been open in previous years.

FabFitFifties · 17/04/2022 14:42

SamphirethePogoingStickerist - are you sure you grew up with shops shut on a Saturday? I grew up with 1/2 day Wednesday and shut Sunday, but Saturday was shopping day.

Iwantacampervan · 17/04/2022 14:47

I was at work (by choice) in our large supermarket this morning as we were restocking shelves and setting up the gardening aisle - judging by the number of cars turning up and then driving off it seems that many didn't realise that we were shut. However, the number that try to shop after 4pm or before 10am on a normal Sunday also shows that they are not aware of Sunday trading hours.

Ohmnomnom · 17/04/2022 14:47

Coop is open! I went to Tesco earlier and we're clearly not very bright round here as there was a constant stream of people driving in then out again.

gavisconismyfriend · 17/04/2022 14:50

I’m in Scotland and large supermarkets are open today (thank goodness as had forgotten to buy mum an Easter egg!)

GrandRapids · 17/04/2022 14:51

I did. Thank god for the co-op

Glumgal · 17/04/2022 14:51

It's not just you @Pyri Blush
I'm currently stuck at home with covid so haven't been out to the shops all week. I did an online shop mid week but was hoping to be fit to go shopping today and have now ran out of food! It totally bypassed me that they wouldn't be open. Looks like it's going to have to be something made with tinned tuna or eggs as that's all I have left!

Talipesmum · 17/04/2022 14:54

I probably would have been, but some v useful person put an alert/reminder on our village Facebook page. I usually inwardly roll my eyes at this sort of thing as it’s obvious - but this time I’m 75% sure I’d have been caught out! So instead of sitting down with a nice cup of tea I swiftly popped to the shops yesterday afternoon!

We’re normally on holiday or staying with family over Easter weekend so I wouldn’t usually be thinking of shopping, so it wasn’t in my mind.

SaxendaSummer · 17/04/2022 14:55

I think it's something to do with store sizes that determine who can/can't open

Square footage or something

janj2301 · 17/04/2022 15:01

I once came out of a BBC recording on Easter Sunday to find hundreds of tourists milling about looking for somewhere open. Only shops under 3000sq feet are allowed to open Easter Sunday. All the big stores would love to open if they could but the law says no

SaxendaSummer · 17/04/2022 15:13

No I think the big stores ( we are one) all enjoy being closed! We are that's for sure

A great chance to tidy and restock the shelves ready to go again on bank hol Monday

You don't get a chance to recover otherwise
