What are your Lidl must buys?

I’ve got the day off work and I’m going to Lidl later (yes my life is very exciting and glamorous). I usually do one big Asda order once per fortnight but I want to see if doing smaller Lidl shops would be more cost effective.

What are your favourite Lidl offerings? Our cupboards are completely bare so need all the usuals. Anything to avoid?

I recently switched to Lidl as currently using their podpoint to charge the car regularly. I have yet to see the pink donuts in stock which is probably as well. We like their large slices of ham, the meat is good quality and good value, but veg also good price. Their knock off caramel wafer tunnock style biccies are fab. Greek yoghurt and OJ and also their prepacked and thick sliced seeded loaf is lovely

The choc ices won the best tasting out of all supermarkets. Can’t remember what they’re called but they’re lovely. Try to go in with a list or you’ll end up buying a canoe or a space hopper or a pair of galoshes and a fishing rod!

Most lidl stuff is really good. I think k loo roll I'd expensive and peppermint tea not nice. Otherwise its very good and better than aldi. The main problem I find is I spend too much every time I go in. You'd be better trying a big shop there and see how you get on.

The other thing is I find some very good value meat which I then freeze. Not necessarily cheap stuff but great value, so whole duck for 7.99, sirloin rolled for an 11 person roast £25, ridiculous prices.

Try a big shop but top up from asda if that's what you usually like for items you can't get at lidl.

I haven't been for a while but used to get the smoked salmon and the parmesan cheese, Greek Yoghurt. One thing I avoid like the plague is the potato salad with fromage frais in it. Horrible? Nope! Gorgeous! But in a huge pot and there is only me eating it!!! I used to help myself every couple of minutes from Mum's (RIP) fridge! My Dad (RIP) used to love love love the German sausages but these were seasonal so unless it was BBQ time, he was unlucky!!!

When I was unemployed and normally almost skint I would go in for a cheese topped roll (36p) and sometimes their 30p chocolate which is not the best but desperate measures and all that!!!

Have recently tried their sushi

Eviebeans · 24/04/2022 18:56

Also small cans of ginger shots

I halved my bill there last week. Normally shop in Sainsbury’s. How does it compare to Aldi cost and quality wise?

QuebecBagnet · 24/04/2022 19:09

The sliced cheese, begins with an M.
then processed chicken sliced circles, they actually taste really nice and don’t taste processed.

We rarely go to Lidl (I need to go more often tbh) but the children love their version of Muller fruit corners.

Big tubs of Greek yogurt are fab, as is their version of lurpak butter

Cereals all fine and so cheap!

From the bakery the goats cheese and pesto focaccia is always a treat for me when I go to Lidl that I scoff in the carpark

CaptainHammer · 24/04/2022 20:24

The cheese loaf in the fresh bakery bit.
At the moment for Belgian week, their fries and stroopwaffle ice cream sandwich

Thighdentitycrisis · 24/04/2022 20:31

I regularly buy:
100% peanuts butter.
Assam tea Bags
redbush tea
sleepy tea
parmesan
olive oil
barista oat milk
sundried tomatoes
rye sourdough loaf
i could go on…..

I only go to Lidl for;
Formil (?) Laundry liquid, the purple one, is cheap and really strong smelling
Cat food and cat biscuits
Antihistamines in the yellow/green packet only 79p! I use these to knock me out at night because I get perimenopausal insomnia!
Bakewell tart fruit bar thing they sell at the checkout
And love the £1.50 mixed vegetables boxes

I also get (in my case) menopausal insomnia. Thanks for that tip. Very much appreciated.
