What are your Lidl must buys?

I’ve got the day off work and I’m going to Lidl later (yes my life is very exciting and glamorous). I usually do one big Asda order once per fortnight but I want to see if doing smaller Lidl shops would be more cost effective.

What are your favourite Lidl offerings? Our cupboards are completely bare so need all the usuals. Anything to avoid?

My fave cereal is Lidl's honey nut clusters with chocolate curls

mateysmum · 07/04/2022 12:22

The chocolate is excellent. Much cheaper and infinitely superior to the other supermarkets.
Chorizo
Fresh mozzarella
Stilton - currently on special big packs
Fresh juice - love their apple + mango
Crackers and crisps
Dried fruit and nuts
Freshona coconut milk - rarely available but it is v high % coconut extract - lovely and thick
Crownfield Premium Muesli - absolutely outstanding. Packed with fruit/nuts and big flakes. Recommended it to loads of people who have all been impressed.
Bread flour - much cheaper than elsewhere

Bluffysummers · 07/04/2022 12:27

Anything from the bakery is delightful

Beanies flavoured coffee- they always have the ‘exotic’ flavours. I’m a saddo but it makes my week when I find a new flavour.

Nappies- the best out there fo sho

Kids wooden toys- so good, so cheap

Kids books- they always have our favourites for half price

Squiff70 · 07/04/2022 12:29

Dint forget a Homer-style doughnut! It's a ring doughnut from the bakery topped with pink icing and sprinkles. They're about 20p each a x like crack. I have no idea what flavour the icing is but it's addictive as hell!

Their smoked salmon is good, and the butter with salt crystals.

Words · 07/04/2022 13:05

Yes and the chocolate.

Words · 07/04/2022 13:07

Oh and Gazpacho during Spanish week. Lots of the other speciality stuff they have in their country themed weeks is good too.

StoneWallandRoses · 07/04/2022 13:08

Lidl now sell proper grass fed beef products. Grass fed mince and steaks.
Their deluxe dried pasta, bronze something or other is very good.
Elderflower tonic water - it's new and about 700ml. Very nice.

I live a short walking distance from both Lidl & Aldi. On the whole I prefer the latter but if I do go into Lidl my must buys are:

Own brand:
Jams
Mayonnaise
Muesli – better than Alpen IMO
Frozen Hash Browns
Washing powder, bleach, dishwasher tablets
Their version of Viakal – much cheaper & just as good

madaboutrunning · 07/04/2022 13:19

Big tubs of Greek yogurt
Sourdough from the bakery, especially the rye one
Nuts
Peppers/chillis stuffed with feta (from the fridge section)
Salmon en croute (frozen)
£1.50 veg boxes (when available, which seems to be not very often in my local store)
Pickles in jars
Cream cheese

In fact, there's not much we don't buy from there. It's definitely my favourite supermarket :-)

ohfook · 07/04/2022 13:26

£1.50 too good to go veg boxes. Basically a large box of veg close to use by date but still fine to eat. They put them out every morning and at the one local to me they're usually all gone by around half 9.

I buy a couple a week - I'm finding fruit especially to be very expensive at the minute so they're a massive help to be honest.

Milknosugarta · 07/04/2022 13:29

I use the Q10 skin care and it is better than Nivea. Serum and moisturiser. Also the Aussie dupe shampoo and conditioner. Greek yogurt, ground coffee, bio washing liquid, frozen potato wedges, cheese and deli stuff all good.

dizzydizzydizzy · 07/04/2022 13:30

Prosecco and chocolate!

Furrbabymama87 · 07/04/2022 13:54

The brownies from the bakery are amazing. I liked the breaded camembert with cranberry dip too.

Furrbabymama87 · 07/04/2022 13:56

And they sell the Goober peanut butter jelly spread which is expensive elsewhere.

sproutsandparsnips · 07/04/2022 14:13

I second the chocolate - most of it is fair trade too.
It is annoying that just as I get used to something it is discontinued and they frequently don't have certain items for a long time.
I always bought formil washing powder, the purple one but that seems to have been discontinued and I now have to buy the bio liquid.
Delicious mini macarons, not sure if that's a regular item.
The split pot yogurts.

Muminabun · 07/04/2022 16:00

The nappies knock the pants off pampers imho
The ground coffee in the big gold packet is lovely
The Greek yogurt
Chocolate with hazelnuts in the bar is addictive
Cinnamon buns from the backers section I just don’t buy them to stop eating them same with bakery custard tarts
Seeded bread mentioned already I agree is very good
My Lidl fruit and veg is fine, nice vine tomatoes and cucumbers etc
Salad bags are nice and tend to be fresher than when I get them from Sainsbury’s
The bags of nuts are nice and very reasonable
The dried mango slices omg 😍
These are the things I buy again and again.
Nothing is awful that I have tried but due to the lack of range I also buy in Sainsbury and Tesco’s

Darklane · 07/04/2022 16:37

Cottage cheese, agree with a previous poster that it isn’t a tub of slop like most supermarkets.
The huge tins of peach halves in juice
Greek yoghurt
Grated Parmesan, much bigger packs than most shops.
All the nuts, including roast peanuts which DH prefers to Aldi or KP
The fruit & veg are always fine at the branch I visit.
Own brand shortbread doesn’t taste of cheap fat like some
I like the fact that they sell newspapers unlike the Aldi where I mostly shop.
At this time of year you can pick up some bargains in garden plants & their seeds are cheap & always germinate.

yellowsuninthesky · 07/04/2022 17:03

The chocolate and Gold ground coffee.

user1745 · 07/04/2022 19:51

The chocolate biscuits (fake Twixes & Penguins etc) are very good and good value.

User48751490 · 07/04/2022 19:59

Lidl thin cut marmalade.

CatNeedsFed · 07/04/2022 20:12

Lasagne - really nice and has a long date so it can lurk at the back of the fridge for quite a while just waiting for a midweek meal emergency!

FOJN · 07/04/2022 20:17

I don't shop in Lidl every week, I go about once a month to stock up on the things I prefer over other brands.

Batts tomato ketchup (good luck getting it, it's been put of stock for ages)
Dijon mustard
Tins of cherry tomatoes (65 or 69p)
Bags of nuts (the cashews are cheap and better than anywhere else)
Sourdough pizzas (better than Tesco finest or Aldi)
Extra mature cheddar for everyday eating is good value and just as good as any supermarket brand
Instant hot chocolate (prefer it to any brand)
Cartons of apple juice
Parmesan cheese
West Country butter
Magnum knock offs, better than the original
Pickled cornichons
Frozen sour cherries
Linda McCartney sausages
Sriracha (better than whatever they are selling in Tesco now they no longer stock Flying Goose.
Mushy peas
Ibuprofen liquid capsules (about half the price of neurofen)
Rubber gloves
Food caddy composting bags

I wouldn't buy baked beans there, they're not great.

Babyroobs · 07/04/2022 20:30

@CatNeedsFed

Lasagne - really nice and has a long date so it can lurk at the back of the fridge for quite a while just waiting for a midweek meal emergency!
We had this this evening. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.
Longdistance · 07/04/2022 20:41

We love the lasagne, it's very creamy, but lasts for two adults plus a lunch.

We like the porcini mushroom dried ravioli. It costs something stupid like 59p for a pack, add it to a tomato sauce with chilli and it's a great meal. Found in the pasta aisle.
