What are your Lidl must buys?

I’ve got the day off work and I’m going to Lidl later (yes my life is very exciting and glamorous). I usually do one big Asda order once per fortnight but I want to see if doing smaller Lidl shops would be more cost effective.

What are your favourite Lidl offerings? Our cupboards are completely bare so need all the usuals. Anything to avoid?

They recently had some smoked duck, which was pretty lovely.

pearljamm · 07/04/2022 20:51

Cheese straws from the bakery

timtam23 · 07/04/2022 21:28

The goats' cheese and pesto mini focaccias from the bakery.
Portuguese custard tarts from the bakery.
Their sourdough pizzas are lovely.
Formil washing powder
I bought a tin of very nice Greek olives a few weeks ago during their Greek food promotion.
The Easter and Christmas ranges often have some specialist German treats, I'm loving the bags of chocolate-coated marzipan eggs at the moment
The dried fruit & nuts are really good value
Luxury bars of chocolate are lovely, they do different % of cocoa, I really like the 60% and the 40-something % ones
Recently they had massive bags of paprika crisps which were lovely, but they were in a "when it's gone, it's gone" promotion, and now they're...gone

Their deluxe Mac and cheese in the foil rectangular tray. It tastes better than home made!

Tonkerbea · 07/04/2022 21:38

Oh, and their peanut butter protein balls are so good.

ErinAoife · 07/04/2022 21:40

Their creme caramel, lasagna, frozen salmon fishcake, refillable hand soap,

LadyHelenaJustina · 07/04/2022 22:14

Nuts. (Cashews and almonds)
Frozen nut roast - but sadly, only available at Christmas. This year I'm going to buy dozens of them.
Portuguese Custard tarts.
Italian shortbread biscuits - only available during promotion weeks, but delicious.
Tomato and Basil sauce jars and tinned tomatoes.
The Lidl card - the offers are great. I use both Aldi and Lidl, but try to make sure I spend enough to get my Lidl vouchers.

Carpediem15 · 07/04/2022 22:15

Very very fruity hot cross buns - stocking the freezer with them, best ever.

Carpediem15 · 07/04/2022 22:18

Anybody use their dish washer tabs.

geminiflanagan · 07/04/2022 22:29

When they do Spanish week, the massive jars of chickpeas. They are so much nicer than any other chickpeas, I stockpile them.

Robin60 · 07/04/2022 22:33

Pastel de Nata

BlueFkingTicks · 07/04/2022 22:38

the little individual pies - there's a tomato and goats cheese one, and a sweet potato and pumpkin seed pie and a steak and ale pie. They're lovely

Pegasussnail · 07/04/2022 22:50

I agree with their museli - dh loves it
Also bread section
Jams and marmalade
All the cereals- their own brand Weetabix etc
Flowers and bedding plants
Wine and gin
Meat is lovely eg pork fillet. Meat balls. steak.

Really I'd advise giving whatever you normally get a try in the Lidl version

@Carpediem15

Anybody use their dish washer tabs.
Yes I do and they are absolutely fine.
deadlanguage · 08/04/2022 10:16

The deluxe crisps 😍 they are better than kettle chips! The popcorn is good too.

Also agree with the wholemeal seeded bread - I’m fussy about sliced bread and it’s one of the few I like

They also stock Ritter Sport marzipan chocolate and sell Linda McCartney sausages for way cheaper than anywhere else.

Re newspapers, they do sell them but if you subscribe to a newspaper they don’t take the vouchers.

Sh05 · 08/04/2022 11:57

I like buying the belvita copies from Lidl. Their soft bakes are great.
Also the Fibre Yum bars for kids treats. The pouring yoghurt in one ltre bottle is good too. Their ice creams in the summer are always better than supermarket ices as well

Potatoesdonthavefaces · 08/04/2022 12:27

Their ground coffee in the gold packet is really good for the price. DH is a bit of a coffee snob and will not drink anything else (of a similar price).

Nnique · 08/04/2022 12:54

A question for the LIDL experts...

Is there any rhyme or reason to the foods by country promotions they do? Certain months or something? I’d love to be able to shop there for some Scandinavian treats!

TIA Flowers

Antarcticant · 08/04/2022 12:56

Their cream cheese is great.

Also, their three bird/three game roasts and venison steaks if they have them in.

Their whole frozen lobsters if you CBA prepping them.

Wafflehouse · 08/04/2022 13:02

I’ve just remembered the one thing I actually avoid from Lidl is the fish. Too many times we’ve had to pick out more than a few bones and it’s put me off.

Antarcticant · 08/04/2022 13:05

We had some sprouts from them that had gone off (cooked the same day as bought) so I don't trust their veg.

VeryMuchFlaggingMinty · 08/04/2022 13:30

@user1419

I'm a weekly Lidl shopper and everything I buy is good, they have some brands as well unlike Aldi. However their stock control is abysmal, empty shelves of entire varieties of items eg crisps or toilet roll. If it wasn't for the app and the £12 monthly bonus I'd swap to Aldi.
What is the app and monthly bonus??!

I've been feeling like I should give Lidl a try again and that could well tempt me!

purplesequins · 08/04/2022 13:32

dishwasher tablets.
the all-in-one regularly come up better than big brands in testing.
laundry products as well.

deadlanguage · 08/04/2022 13:34

@VeryMuchFlaggingMinty if you spend £100 in a month you get £2 off and £10 for £200. They’ve just introduced a free bakery item for £50 as well.

Carpediem15 · 08/04/2022 14:18

Thank you - need some soon so will try them.
