What are your Lidl must buys?

I’ve got the day off work and I’m going to Lidl later (yes my life is very exciting and glamorous). I usually do one big Asda order once per fortnight but I want to see if doing smaller Lidl shops would be more cost effective.

What are your favourite Lidl offerings? Our cupboards are completely bare so need all the usuals. Anything to avoid?

This was regarding dishwasher tablets

Mamawarrior · 08/04/2022 14:24

The Lasagne is yummy!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 08/04/2022 15:49

I've also started using the skin care o honestly can't tell any difference between that and the more expensive brands.
We like;
Maple cured streaky bacon
Bakery pretzels, flatbread and pastries
Malted bloomer (great for French toast)
All the cheeses are good
Greek Yoghurt
Cereal
They're millicano style instant coffee
Love the themed food weeks- there's always some nice cream filled dessert (chocolate cherry last week), good cheese and nice snacks
Fake magnums

I do most of my shopping at lidl now I like the lack of choice

VeryMuchFlaggingMinty · 08/04/2022 15:59

@deadlanguage thanks...I think I'll take a look.

I do like Lidl but was caring for parents and shielding for a lot of the last couple of years so have got in the habit of Tesco or Sainsburys deliveries.

LizzieSiddal · 08/04/2022 16:13

Until a month ago I shopped only with Ocado and Waitrose, I decided to give Lidl a try and I’m really impressed!

Nuts and seeds - so much cheaper
Fruit and veg- only had one pepper which was slightly off, rest has been on a par with Waitrose/Ocado
Bread, very impressed with seeded wholemeal from the bakery
Haven’t tried meat yet as tend to buy ffom butcher but have noticed they do organic so will try.
Fish- have bought line caught cod and cold water prawns, both excellent
Premium pizza mozzarella and tomato pizza was just as good as Waitrose
Tinned tomatoes

Every shop so far I’ve put into my Ocado app and I’ve saved almost 40% Shock I’m kicking myself for not going years ago.

They did do really good value dishwasher salt and rinse aid. Last time I looked I couldn't find it, but I'm hoping they still do it.

Ohmnomnom · 08/04/2022 16:21

Lidl does a lovely pinoit noir for about £7 that is delicious 😋 It's either Australian or New Zealand, I can't remember.

Chilli and garlic olives
Pesto, goat cheese and tomato thing from the bakery
The yellow donuts with lemon crunchy sprinkles

Avoid the salad bags. Every one I've bought from there has had slimey bits in it.

Vanderpump · 08/04/2022 16:26

Their decaf cafetière coffee and anything from the bakery!

BluTangClan · 08/04/2022 16:28

Sea salt & Suffolk Cider crinkle cut crisps. Just the right amount of flavouring.

Own brand Hob Nobs, Digestives and Jaffa Cakes.

Apple and Cinnamon porridge bars (flapjacks really) from the cereal bar area.

myyellowcar · 08/04/2022 16:34

I used to really like it but gradually I’ve found that I’ve wasted my money on bits that are rubbish. Avoid:

Pitta breads: just weird.
Bubble bath: rubbish.
Cleaning spray: don’t think I’ve ever had one where the spray function actually worked until the bottle was empty.
Chocolate buttons: just not nice
Mince: always off way before the use by date

Meat in general is hit and miss, some stores are better than others. Fruit and veg is also hit and miss.

You won’t regret buying their ice creams, frozen sweet potato chips or any bakery items.

BluTangClan · 08/04/2022 16:39

Fake mint Aero.

1000yardstare · 08/04/2022 18:51

Charcuterie platters
Brie
No added water wafer thin ham ( blue packet)
Degreaser spray- amazing in the kitchen
Dishwasher tabs
Just switched to formil 'pure' fabric conditioner
Salted butter
Spreadable butter
Condensed milk

1000yardstare · 08/04/2022 18:53

Also agree with aussie shampoo/ conditioners and the quality of their fair-trade chocolate. Their gold coffee is good and I've just tried their knightsbridge gold tea tooSmile

deadlanguage · 08/04/2022 19:23

I don’t have any issues with their pitta breads (I get the wholemeal ones). Something I do avoid is the seeded wraps, because something in them is like crack to me and I’m there just eating them out of the packet!

purdypuma · 08/04/2022 19:54

Flowers tend to last quite well & are reasonably priced. My cats love the grain free cat food pouches & their coshida dry food & we've always used their big bags of cat litter.
Bakery is full of lovely treats & nuts, crisps & chocolates also all very nice.
Love their moisturisers, serum & eye cream all with hyaluronic acid. Also buy on a regular basis their hay-fever tablets & peppermint antacid tablets.

mmmmmmghturep · 08/04/2022 20:03

Does anyone know what Beanies coffee flavours Lidl have in at the moment? Ive checked both Lidl and Beanies Twitter feeds and cant find the usual promotional tweets.

mmmmmmghturep · 16/04/2022 19:04

Sainsburys have the Easter Beanies in this year. Choice of Hot Cross Bun or Easter Cream. I bought the latter.

SkiingIsHeaven · 16/04/2022 19:05

Thick Greek yogurt. Delicious.

mmmmmmghturep · 21/04/2022 21:46

Beanies Easter Cream tastes like a lighter version of their Irish Cream flavour with a hint of chocolate. It doesnt taste like Creme Egg which is the claim.

Pissyduck · 21/04/2022 22:02

The cream cheese is excellent, just like Philadelphia and makes amazing cheesecake.

The frozen stonebaked pizzas are amazing, and only £2.09. The goats cheese and onion one is delicious

Pomegranate- cheapest around and the quality of the seeds inside is better than Waitrose. They just look a bit more beat up
Pretzels
Dark raspberry chocolate
Giant butter beans in the short fat tins
Butter,
Their macaroons

I tend to avoid the whole grain German bread- often is mouldy

The truffle filled pasta made me ill

Pineappleapplepen · 21/04/2022 22:36

If you're feeling lazy - their ready made lasagne feeds 4 at least and really delish.
I love that Nasi Goreng!
Cheese coleslaw- lush
Their malted loaf - thick and yummy
I use to love their crisps but they've changed recipe and not so good anymore.

WildishBambino · 21/04/2022 22:38

Their apple juice is the same as the Waitrose Essentials one - I know, I've done a taste test on my family. It also comes in 1.5l cartons for less than the Waitrose litre price.

toastofthetown · 21/04/2022 22:43

They have a chocolate bar which I've just noticed in my Lidl, clearly heavily inspired by Tony's Chocolonely, called Way To Go and the caramelised almond and sea salt one is delicious.
