@JMAngel1

I think I’ve read it all now - Putin doesn’t deserve a slap?????
Comical isn’t it. 😳
LosingTheWill2022 · 28/03/2022 17:16

Just came back and read the thread having posted earlier.

I'm utterly in despair of the number of people condoning Smith's action and minimising by saying it was "only a slap" or he deserved it.

Dangerous and short sighted view point. And shockingly similar to the justification for male violence towards women, children and others of lower status that existed for 100s of years.

In this case people feel that Rock's hurtful words justified a physical response. Unbelievsble. Understanding the motivation for an action doesn't excuse it. And condemning the behaviour doesn't mean accepting the 'joke' was OK.

This thread has really depressed me.

Completely agree. Double standards when it's someone they like.
StrawberryPot · 28/03/2022 17:18

I really don't get why people like Chris Rock, Ricky Gervais, Rebel Wilson etc think it's okay to be so offensive and rude about people. Maybe being shocking is their substitute for being witty and genuinely funny - because they aren't.

MorganKitten · 28/03/2022 17:19

It was real, Rock shouldn’t have mentioned her, she stated this year she has to shave her head due to alopecia, for any women hair loss is awful but a lot of black culture is to do with hair. Smith was protecting his clearly upset wife. He shouldn’t have hit him but Rock hasn’t been funny for years.

DrSbaitso · 28/03/2022 17:20

It's not that Putin doesn't deserve a slap as much as the people of Ukraine don't deserve this crime against humanity and their oppression to be trivialised in this tasteless, yet risible manner for nursery-level moralistic internet point scoring.

Very well put. Tempted to applaud 👏

LosingTheWill2022 · 28/03/2022 17:24

And postS blaming Jada? WTAF

SunshineCake1 · 28/03/2022 17:25

@LaurenKelsey

How embarrassing for everyone there. Will Smith was behaving like a child. Definitely not the time or place for it. He seemed to regret it by the time he returned to the stage.
No. Not like a child most children know not to slap others.
Firefly1987 · 28/03/2022 17:26

Yeh that was completely real. Used to like Will Smith but didn't know much about his wife or family so didn't get the joke. I wouldn't wanna be anywhere near him that was a very scary response totally unacceptable.

MiniDaffodils · 28/03/2022 17:27

It is NEVER acceptable to hit/slap ANYONE.

Dillydollydingdong · 28/03/2022 17:28

That would be nice with a M&S poached salmon sandwich.

Dillydollydingdong · 28/03/2022 17:28

Whoops sorry. Wrong thread 🙄

I agree. There's no excuse or justification. It should be career ending but it won't be. What a way to fuck up a huge achievement for himself.

'It's not that Putin doesn't deserve a slap as much as the people of Ukraine don't deserve this crime against humanity and their oppression to be trivialised in this tasteless, yet risible manner for nursery-level moralistic internet point scoring.'

Exactly.

Zotter · 28/03/2022 17:34

I don’t like humour that punches down, but that does not excuse Will Smith’s awful, violent response.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 28/03/2022 17:34

@Thefaceofboe

On a slow mo video I’ve seen will is smiling while he’s walking away. I think it was staged
I said this, it seems he’s smirking. Seems like a publicity stunt. If it wasn’t then fair play to chris for carrying on. I like chris Rock but sometimes his jokes go too far. It’s a bit of 50/50 he shouldn’t have said what he said and will shouldn’t have slapped him like that. He shouldn’t lose his Oscar though, that has literally no bearing on his acting ability’s.
Joyce7905 · 28/03/2022 17:36

Agreed!

Doyoumind · 28/03/2022 17:42

It wasn't a publicity stunt. Why would Will Smith overshadow an Oscars win by making himself look like a complete dick? Do you think he needed the money?

Quirkyme · 28/03/2022 17:43

@JaniieJones

Omg 😆 your comment made me laugh "you need to access an anger management course"

Haha took me out. Thanks for the laugh. Just the way you dropped the line , love it

EveryCloudIsGrey · 28/03/2022 17:45

Of course Will Smith shouldn't have hit Rock. I'm amazed how he wasn't immediately escorted off the premises. There is no excuse.

Rick made a sick joke but that's an entirely different matter.

Quirkyme · 28/03/2022 17:46

@Lampzade

Now, I don’t like Chris Rock. He is simply not funny. However, I am not convinced that he knew about Jada’s alopecia. She has always often rocked short cropped hair ( she has beautiful features, so it suits her). She has always been slightly edgy and wacky so it would not be a surprise to many that she would shave her head. I am almost positive that Chris Rock will put out a statement saying that he was not aware of her condition and that he thought that she deliberately shaved her hair. He may even have thought that he was complimenting her by comparing her to Demi Moore’s character, who is strong and independent. I think that Jada took umbrage because the comment was made by Chris Rock( who made Jada a target of his so called ‘jokes’ in 2016 Oscars). So there is some history of his picking in her I think that Chris Rock is a misogynistic prick. However, I do feel that WS handled the whole thing incorrectly and it tarnished his Oscar win
Agree with everything you've said.
Peoniesandpeaches · 28/03/2022 17:47

@PutinSmellsPassItOn

He deserved it.

And it speaks volumes that Chris Rock couldn't help himself enough to not beat the shit out of Rhianna behind closed doors but managed to keep his hands to himself when he was slapped by a man in public. Hmm

Jesus Christ the absolute racism on here is staggering. No dear that is another black man 20 years Chris Rocks junior. His name was Chris Brown.
Spectre8 · 28/03/2022 17:51

@Eyedropeyeflop

If people are randomly going round calling members of the public fat, then they definitely shouldn’t be shocked if they do happen to get a slap!! inserts a shocked face 🤭.

Maybe just be nice to people and then you won’t get a slap, there’s a thought.

Or maybe don't get so triggered by what a stranger says to you. Honestly the only opinions that matter to me are the people who I am close to. Anyone outside of that, their opinion/comments do not hold any value to me.

So I've had racist comments shouted at me alot, I just don't pay them any attention because those people don't matter to me.

Exception being medical related opinions of course.

It speaks volumes about you that your only redress for a verbal comment is violence.
