The problem is.

People don’t realise how a punch can do easily turn into death

I’ve known many cases where someone got pushed. Hit punched and it killed them.

People forget that fact so easily

RedToothBrush · 28/03/2022 16:39

@VampireMoney

Imagine if he'd walked up to Rock, taken the mic and said you apologise to my wife NOW. That would have been a more powerful message than a slap, shouting, swearing. Making him apologise in front of millions of viewers instead of what he actually did, which was make it all about himself look at me big man hitting this guy to defend my wife. I'd be so ashamed if my Lerner 'defended' me in such a thuggish manner.
Verbally abusive cave man is punched by physically abusive cave man isn't anywhere near as powerful is it?

Absoluetely agree that he should have asked for an apology, as no matter how upsetting it was, it was a disproportionate act and really does destroy the idea of Smith being a good role model.

The whole optics of 'woman is fair game as target' and 'woman belongs to me therefore I must be violent' are not exactly challenging a pro-feminist agenda and smashing the idea that Hollywood is full of sexist pricks even post Weinsten is it?

The whole incident is utterly depressing but does sort of encapsulate the whole toxic culture of Hollywood supposedly being outwardly progressive, but actually being little more than a veneer and instead deep down promotes violence and habours a somewhat backward attitude to women.

I do think the Oscars really have had their day and need a total revamp and rethink.

Nocutenamesleft · 28/03/2022 16:40

I know someone who slapped someone who’d accidentally pushed him

He fell back. Hit his head and the guy got tears in prison for manslaughter

okayigetit · 28/03/2022 16:41

@Eyedropeyeflop

I wouldn’t be ashamed of my partner if he did that (display a human emotion that isn’t desirable, but nonetheless still very much human).

Disappointed maybe but not ashamed.

@okayigetit

It doesn’t matter that all of them were black.
If he was openly dissing a white womans bald head the public would probably have more sympathy for WS. Don’t believe that if you don’t want too but it’s true.

What are you basing that off of though? Some made up scenario that's never happened? Lots of people are saying that Jada should be offended and condemning Chris Rock for the joke, and lots of people make jokes about other women, some of whom are white, without people running to their defence, Katie price, Amy winehouse, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears? Amanda bynes, Sarah Jessica Parker was named worlds most unsexy woman etc
okayigetit · 28/03/2022 16:44

@JMAngel1

I say fair play - Jada has alopecia - her hair is not a style statement. Will was being over protective but clearly Jada has been very upset about her condition.
Where does it end then? Would you also say fair play to one of Chris Rock's siblings or ex wife or whoever going and beating will smith up? Because by your logic, it would be justified
DearlyBeloathed · 28/03/2022 16:45

@PutinSmellsPassItOn

He deserved it.

And it speaks volumes that Chris Rock couldn't help himself enough to not beat the shit out of Rhianna behind closed doors but managed to keep his hands to himself when he was slapped by a man in public. Hmm

Get your people right before writing such BS.

So what else can I hit people for? If I'm on a bus and and someone makes a comment about me being fat, should I be allowed to walk up and slap them round the face? What if I make a comment about a 6ft man about him prematurely going bald or grey? Is it OK for him to hit me? What about my partner? If I SAY something to him, how hard can he hit me?
TerriblyNaice · 28/03/2022 16:47

@Alondra

I didn't see the incident but I saw Will's speech and my first thought was "he's high". He was too emotional and kept talking and talking. Frankly, I'm not surprised to read about the punching.
This exactly!

Exactly. I said something along these lines upthread and was mocked for it. According to some people on this thread it's perfectly acceptable behaviour.

Eyedropeyeflop · 28/03/2022 16:52

If people are randomly going round calling members of the public fat, then they definitely shouldn’t be shocked if they do happen to get a slap!! inserts a shocked face 🤭.

Maybe just be nice to people and then you won’t get a slap, there’s a thought.

Christ.
CanIPleaseHaveOne · 28/03/2022 16:54

@GingerFoxInAT0phat

Wills been publicly humiliated for a while now since the Red Table talks have started. I think his wife always talking about Tupac is embarrassing also (for him). It’s almost a though a curtain of protection for the family has been ripped open and he (plus the wider family) are now openly mocked and he is now seen as weak.

The joke was under the belt, no doubt about that, but there was no way Chris Rock should have been assaulted in front of the world for doing his job.

I’ve seen a clip of Will Smith slapping a journalist on the red carpet in the past, so it doesn’t even look like an isolated incident.

To me it all boils down to a bunch of people who live in such a distorted sense of reality that makes them feel like they can get away with anything!

That 'journalist" kissed him on the mouth.
Eyedropeyeflop · 28/03/2022 16:58

@VampireMoney

Christ? Please explain?

There you go again not being able to distinguish between different incidents.

We will have to agree to disagree.

Sometimes people do deserve a slap. That doesn’t mean that ALL violence is condoned (particularly DV which is most certainly raising its head here as a counter argument).

I can definitely think of a few people off the top of my head who deserve a slap. Off the top of my head….. Putin? God I’d love it if someone slapped him.

SueSaid · 28/03/2022 16:59

'Maybe just be nice to people and then you won’t get a slap, there’s a thought'

You need to access an anger management course if this is seriously what you think.

AnastasiaRomanov · 28/03/2022 17:00

How would you feel then if people who disagree with you slap you routinely? Would that be OK? Or your kids?

DearlyBeloathed · 28/03/2022 17:02

Off the top of my head….. Putin? God I’d love it if someone slapped him

Which would achieve what exactly? Fuck all.

SueSaid · 28/03/2022 17:02

'Sometimes people do deserve a slap'

No, they don't.

Putin doesn't 'deserve a slap' either. He of course needs his comrades to stand up to him but not sure slapping is going to help.

DrSbaitso · 28/03/2022 17:07

How very abusive.

No, it's not a case of not being able to differentiate between different incidents, it's I can't be arsed to respond to you because your opinions are just bollocks. But hey each time their own eh.

Putin needs more then a slap!

I'm sure he lives in fear of you and your handbag.

JMAngel1 · 28/03/2022 17:10

I’m shocked that people think they could go around and call someone fat and think there is no possibility of them getting a slap😂

Chocolate. Offer him chocolate.
okayigetit · 28/03/2022 17:11

Some how Putin has been dragged into this conversation, I would actually be fine with Putin being given a slap tbh haha, but not sure Chris Rock is quite on par with Putin
