All-mond, southerner who's spent half her life living in Yorkshire

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 06/03/2022 09:20

If I think about it first I would pronounce it ah - mund but naturally, in my chimney sweeper accent it would come out as All - mund. London.

Woollystockings · 06/03/2022 09:30

The dictionary tells you how to pronounce it quite clearly. There is definitely no pronounced L.

ˈɑːmənd

It isn’t supposed to be! Any more than salmon is sal mun. Silent L in both.

@inheritancetrack

Arr mund although I know it's supposed to be awl mond
It isn’t. You don’t pronounce the L. You don’t pronounce it in palm or salmon or calm. It’s in the dictionary- ˈɑːmənd. No L sound.
PeskyRooks · 06/03/2022 10:39

Well I've been saying it wrong my whole life then.

Luckily it's not a word I say very often. Especially since they discontinued almond Yorkies!

StopStartStop · 06/03/2022 10:41

Scottish here I'd say al mind (min as in minutes not as in mine) perhaps better to write al-mnd but that's not quite right 😆. Definitely clearly pronounce the L though
